NCAA Tournament 2012: Syracuse, Kentucky 'The Two Best Teams,' Says Committee Chairman

Before they even begin the Big East Tournament, the Syracuse Orange have done enough to warrant a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. That's no surprise to anyone paying attention, but this might be:

The NCAA tournament committee chairman said as much.

During a teleconference on Wednesday, Jeff Hathaway said Syracuse and Kentucky are clearly better than every other team in the nation, a sentiment that seems to all but guarantee both teams a No. 1 seed.

"I think we all agree that if the season ended today, we know who the two best teams are," he said Wednesday. "If you're looking at 3 and 4 on the first line and the entire second line, we have the same handful of teams in mind but where they would be laced will be a tremendous debate."

Though noting that injuries and/or suspensions could change the committee's mind, Hathaway minced no words in calling Kentucky and Syracuse the cream of the crop.

"The bottom line is, everyone today knows that if the season ended, we would say those two teams are the best in the country," Hathaway said.
