The Syracuse Orange and Providence Friars are less than 90 minutes away from tipping off in a Big East Conference game (6 p.m. on SNY) at the Carrier Dome, and the Friars will be playing without their leading scorer and passer, junior guard Vincent Council. According to the Syracuse Post-Standard's Mike Waters via Twitter, the decision was made by head coach Ed Cooley. The reason for the benching is not yet known.
So far this season, Council is tops on the team in points (16.4 points per game) and assists (7.1 per game). In the previous match up between these two programs, which happened just nine days ago, Jan. 4, Council tallied 17 points and five assists in a 87-73 home loss to the No. 1-ranked Orange (18-0, 5-0).
Now, the Friars (12-6, 1-4) were a long shot to upset Syracuse on its home court, but the odds are now really stacked against them without their top player.
