Joe Lefeged is the only Rutgers University football player scheduled to work out when the school holds its Pro Day for NFL scouts, coaches and general managers on March 9. Lefeged was also the only member of the Scarlet Knights to be invited to the recently-concluded NFL Scouting Combine.
Lefeged is a strong safety/kick returner and he ran the fastest 40-yard dash among all the safeties at the Combine, a 4.43. Prior to the Combine, reports on Lefeged were mixed, indicating that he likely would be a later draft pick and may not have the ability to start at the NFL level.
During the past two seasons Lefeged return 49 kickoffs for 1,304 yards, a 26.6-yard average. He also returned six punts for 18 yards.
The NFL can always find room for guys with speed and special teams ability — especially kick return ability — so there is sure to be some interest in the Rutgers prospect.
