A stabbing occurred inside the Carrier Dome Friday night and forced the Syracuse Orange men's and women's basketball program's "Midnight Madness" celebration to be ended a half hour early, the Syracuse Police Department confirmed.
According to CNYCentral.com's Michael Benny, the victim is a 25-year-old man who's in serious but stable condition. The victim was not a student at Syracuse University.
Syracuse Police Department's Sgt. Tom Connellan said the stabbing took place on the concourse and police decided to shutdown the event early, "in interest of public safety," (via The Daily Orange, SU's student newspaper).
"We're going to definitely evaluate this event, determine what the cause of this was, why it occurred," Connellan said to The Daily Orange.
The event, which serves as a preseason pep rally for the upcoming basketball seasons and is also used as a recruiting tool, featured scrimmages, dunk and 3-point shooting contests and a performance by rapper Wale. The entertainer was scheduled to perform two songs, but performed just one due to the abrupt ending to the event.
