Freshman forward Amir Garrett netted a collegiate-best 18 points Monday to help the St. John's Red Storm defeat the DePaul Blue Demons, 79-72, in a Big East Conference men's basketball game at Carnesecca Arena in Jamaica, NY. The Red Storm (12-16, 5-10 Big East) earned a two-game, series sweep of the Blue Demons (11-16, 2-13), who had their current seven-game losing streak extended.
Freshman guard D'Angelo Harrison netted a team-best 23 points, while backcourt-mate Moe Harkless added 14 and 10 rebounds for St. John's, which earned its second straight victory.
The Johnnies now are in sole possession of 11th place in the 16-team conference, which will hold its league tournament at St. John's home court, Madison Square Garden, in two weeks.
DePaul's Cleveland Melvin tallied 18 points and snagged a collegiate-best 15 points for DePaul, which led by as much as four point but never in the second half.
