The 2012 Butkus Award Watch List was released on Monday morning, much to the delight of college football fans all over this great land. For those who need a quick refresher, the Butkus Award is handed out to the best linebacker in the nation, in honor of Chicago Bears great Dick Butkus.
On this years docket, two Rutgers Scarlet Khights were put on the watch in Khaseem Greene and Steve Beauharnais. While nobody made it from a New York High School, Al-Rasheed Benton adorns the list from Shabazz HS in Newark, NJ.
Greene is a true star who made the Bednarik Watch List as well (top defensive player). The senior linebacker made 140 tackles as a sophomore to go with 3.5 sacks. Beauharnais made 77 stops last year as a junior including a whopping 16 for a loss. The standout also had five sacks on the campaign.
Benton is one of only three youngsters to make the list from a New Jersey High School, along with Buddy Brown and Dajuan Drennon.
