Rutgers University wide eeceiver Mohamed Sanu is quickly emerging as the best NFL Draft prospect in the Big East Conference (well, what was traditionally the Big East. Can anyone keep track of what's going on with these conferences anymore?).
Sanu, a junior, is having a breakout season, already surpassing the numbers he put up as a sophomore and has put himself into late-first round consideration. At 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, Sanu the kind of size that NFL teams covet at the wide receiver position.
In 2010, Sanu battled injuries all season as he caught 44 balls for 418 yards, but this year through six games Sanu 55 receptions for 639 yards and five touchdowns. Besides his height and production Sanu has excellent athletic ability and has been a versatile player for the Scarlet Knights. Sanu started his Rutgers career as a safety before being moved to receiver. With the Knights, Sanu has also run the wildcat.
Sanu is expected to enter the draft after the season and is likely to be a late first-round, early second-round pick because of his strong hands, size, and agility. If Sanu can put up a fast 40-yard dash time during pre-draft workouts he could see his stock even go higher.
Sanu has been a positive development for Rutgers in its 5-1 start. Sanu doesn't have much competition in the Big East for the top prospect to be drafted. West Virginia's Bruce Irvin has struggled with a move to defensive end this year after having a monster season last year (14 sacks). Sanu's primary competition for first Big East player to be drafted is probably Pittsburgh defensive end Brandon Lindsey. Keep an eye on Sanu the rest of the season and watch him continue to put up big numbers as he tries to catapult himself into mid-first round conversation.
