After a squeaking out a 21-20 victory over Navy Saturday, the Rutgers University football program was rewarded Sunday with a two votes in AP Poll and 31 points in the USA Today/Coaches top 25 rankings. The votes were not enough to help the Scarlet Knights (5-1, 2-0 Big East Conference) crack the top 25 -- Rutgers is ranked No. 35 in the AP poll and No. 28 in the USA Today/Coaches poll -- but it is an acknowledgement that something good is happening in Piscataway, NJ.
On Friday (8 p.m. on ESPN2), the Scarlet Knights, who are still a top of the Big East standings, travel to the University of Louisville for a Big East match up.
In the rest of the rankings, West Virginia University is still the only Big East program ranked in both polls. The Mountaineers (5-1, 1-0), who this week had a bye, is ranked No. 11 in the AP Poll and No. 13 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll. On Friday, WVU will visit Syracuse University (8 p.m. on ESPN) in a prime time contest. The Mountaineers are also ranked No. 15 in the first BCS rankings.
Meanwhile, in the AP Poll, Louisiana State University is ranked No. 1, while the University of Alabama, the University of Oklahoma, University of Wisconsin and Boise State University round out the top 5, respectively.
The USA Today/Coaches poll has: Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama, Wisconsin and the University of Stanford in the top five.
