2012 Russell Athletic Bowl final score: Virginia Tech defeats Rutgers, 13-10 in OT

Virginia Tech scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and overtime to defeat Rutgers, 13-10, in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Friday.

The Hokies clinched the game in the first overtime period when Cody Journell connected on a 22-yard field goal to give Virginia Tech a 13-10 lead.

Nick Borgese had an opportunity to send the game into a second overtime period but he missed a 42-yard field goal attempt to secure the Virginia Tech win.

Rutgers jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter after Khaseem Greene recovered and returned a fumble for a touchdown and Borgese kicked a 36-yard field goal.

The Scarlet Knights' lead held through three quarters before Virginia Tech scored twice in under two minutes at the beginning of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 10-10 with 11:06 remaining in the game.

Virginia Tech had an opportunity to take the lead late but Journell missed a 51-yard field goal with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter to maintain the tie. Journell eventually made the game-winning field goal in overtime.
