Rutgers Scarlet Knights cornerback Logan Ryan has been named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, the Jim Thorpe Association announced Monday.
The award is given to the nation's top defensive back, and Ryan was included among 15 semifinalists. The finalists will be revealed Nov. 19.
Ryan is the only athlete from a Big East institution to be named as a semifinalist. He has been all over the field for Rutgers this season, recording 35 tackles, three of which have been for a loss. Ryan also has three interceptions and 10 passes defended. The passes defended rank him 24th nationally.
The Scarlet Knights suffered their first loss of the season to Kent State on Saturday, but Ryan was excellent. The senior recorded 13 tackles, nine of which were solo, and a pass defensed. Ryan and his teammates will try to get back on track against a struggling Army squad Nov. 10 following a bye week.
