Jets head coach Rex Ryan indicated that X-rays on Santonio Holmes injured left foot were negative, but that they're still awaiting word on an MRI and it's unlikely the wideout plays against the Texans.

While the Jets are still trying to figure out the exact injury to the left foot of Santonio Holmes, head coach Rex Ryan did confirm on Monday that X-rays were negative. Holmes injured his foot in the fourth quarter during the Jets blowout loss to the 49ers, instantly crumpling to the turf and fumbling the ball. He was carted off the field for what looked like a very serious injury.

Ryan stated on Monday that the good news is there's no broken bone, but the Jets medical staff is still waiting to determine the results of an MRI. "As far as Santonio coming back, we got good news that the X-rays were negative. The MRI, we're having shipped to different places and all that type of stuff, so I'm not sure how many weeks he's going to be out (or) the real extent of that injury," Ryan said. "We just know the X-rays were negative, so I think that's good news."

While there was some good news, Ryan would elaborate later and say that it would "obviously take some time" for Holmes to return. The seventh-year wideout from Ohio State is the top target for Mark Sanchez, and his loss would be a big blow to an offense already struggling to find rhythm. While Ryan would not confirm whether it was a lisfranc injury, he did say it's likely Holmes will be out against the Texans. "The MRI, again, they're shipping it out to different people and things like that. Obviously, it looks doubtful for this week, but further than that, I'm not sure."

Ryan did not clarify when final results of the MRI would be available.

The New York Jets were hammered at home 34-0 by the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, creating serious doubts in the process.

The New York Jets were absolutely taken apart on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium, losing 34-0 to an inspired San Francisco 49ers team.

New York seems hopeless from the outset, falling behind early on and never picking up much steam offensively. Mark Sanchez had another rough game while his top weapon in Santonio Holmes had to leave with a foot injury.

Many are now pointing to the job general manager Mike Tannenbaum has done (or more accurately, hasn't done) with this roster, leaving the Jets vulnerable to injuries, as Scott Salmon writes over at Gang Green Nation:

Before the season started, I was a staunch Mike Tannenbaum supporter. But I'm willing to admit that I was wrong, and I think Tannenbaum's time with us is coming to an end. Our team has no depth and roster-wise has been getting worse each and every year. It's probably time to start looking for a new general manager at the end of the season.

If New York continues to struggle, Tannenbaum could very well be on the hot seat when owner Woody Johnson assesses what went wrong in 2012.

Santonio Holmes suffered a non-contact foot injury in the team's 34-0 loss, and will have an MRI performed to judge the extent of the injury. John Conner and Dedrick Epps also left the team's Week 4 game with injuries.

After a non-contact injury cost Darrelle Revis his season after Week 3, the New York Jets have to be nervous with Santonio Holmes undergoing an MRI Monday.

Holmes hurt his left foot in the fourth quarter of the team's 34-0 blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers. His injury cost the team a touchdown as he dropped the ball in pain, allowing San Francisco to scoop the ball up and score a 51-yard fumble return, but the potential consequences could be much bigger. Holmes left the field on a cart and was seen with crutches and his foot in a boot after the game. Rex Ryan would not comment on the injury, although it was made known that the Jets' No. 1 wideout would be having the MRI to determine the injury's severity.

The Jets also suffered two additional injuries on contributors to the team's offense. John Conner left the game with a hamstring injury and did not return, leaving the team without a fullback on the roster. That put the Jets in the unique position of using Tim Tebow as a blocker for Mark Sanchez on several passing downs. Conner had missed Week 3's game against the Dolphins and was replaced by tight end Konrad Reuland. One of Reuland's backups, tight end Dedrick Epps, also left the game after hurting his knee. Epps, who the Jets signed Sept. 14 and had missed earlier games with injury, caught his first career reception on Tebow's first passing attempt with the Jets. But like Holmes, Epps was injured while carrying the ball and fumbled.

The New York Jets are tied for first place in the AFC East. At least they have that going for them.

That designation is essentially a technicality, with the dismal beating the Jets just suffered at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday fresh in their minds. Forget that this was actually a close game until midway through the third quarter. The 34-0 final score speaks for itself. The Jets were beaten up and down the field all day on Sunday, to the delight of the throngs of Niners fans that in attendance that made MetLife Stadium look and sound like Candlestick East. And adding injury to insult, a week after losing their best defensive player Darrelle Revis to an injury, the Jets didn't get out of this one unscathed either as the status of their most talented offensive player, Santonio Holmes, is up in the air after leaving Sunday's game with a foot injury. WIth another tough matchup on the docket for Week 5, the Jets are now officially in a perilous position.

The Good

Tim Tebow's 104.2 passer rating. YEEHAW!

The Bad

Unfortunately, Tebow's one completion did result in one of the Jets' four turnovers - Dedrick Epps' fumble. The Jets simply had no chance in this game if they didn't take care of the ball, and they were horrible with ball security all day. All four turnovers were bad ones - Sanchez's pick on a screen pass, his poor pocket presence on his fumble, Holmes' carelessly throwing the ball away after going down with an injury and Epps' fumble. All poor plays and avoidable situations. Overall, the Jets' offense was downright putrid, from the still-absent running game to Sanchez's awful performance.

This game wasn't on the Jets' defense, but they didn't exactly play well either. The team still shows a shocking inability to control their opponents' running game. Colin Kaepernick out-Tebowed the Jets out of the Wildcat formation, and Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter both ran right through the guts of the Jets defense. If this team doesn't fix it's problems in run defense, they're simply going to be an average-at-best defense for the rest of the season.

The Ugly

Quite simply, the Jets' offense was an abomination. Sanchez looked lost and confused, the Jets' offensive line didn't protect well, the running game was non existent, and the receivers failed to get open or stretch the field. But the guy that's going to bear the brunt of the criticism, and absolutely deservedly so, is Sanchez. The "Tebow!" chants were raining down all day from the disenchanted Jets' fanbase. I'm one of Sanchez's staunchest defenders and someone who thinks Tebow is a total joke as an NFL quarterback, but you now what? Sanchez deserved every boo and every chant for his backup that he got on Sunday, and if he doesn't start playing better and quickly, he'll deserve to be benched. Enough is enough - it's time for Sanchez to take ownership of this team, of this offense's struggles and do something about it. That's what a real franchise quarterback would do.

There's no question that the Jets' skill position players are among the worst in the NFL. The Jets have not done a good job of developing Sanchez, and it almost seems like he's set up to fail this year. But the thing is, HE can't think like that. We, as fans and observes, are allowed to. But on Monday against the Texans, and for the next few weeks, Sanchez simply needs to step up and play well. If he doesn't, the Jets' season could spiral out of control, and then where does that put Sanchez as a viable NFL starting quarterback?

It's not time to jump ship on Sanchez yet, but it's absolutely fair to start asking these questions and wondering about the big picture.

Opening Statement...
I apologize for my language because I was going to say we got our butt kicked, but we got our (behinds) kicked. There's no two ways, in's or out's about it. It should (have been) 7-3 at halftime, but it's 10- 0 because of mistakes we made. Then we come out (in the second half), turn the ball over four times....here's the recipe for getting your (behind) kicked: 2-for-13 on third down - that's 15 percent, four turnovers, a blocked punt when they rushed one guy, and giving up 245 yards rushing. How's that for a recipe? It's unacceptable. We've got to look at it. It starts with the coaches. The players aren't going to be in on Monday or Tuesday. They have to dig deep and look down at themselves. As coaches, we need to
look at what we're doing. I've never given up so many rushing yards in my life. What can we do to help? We can't just say it's poor tackling and this and that. There must be something to it, so we're going to find out. Clearly, we're not going to beat anybody when we play like we did today.

On why the offense struggled...
That's a good question. I don't know. We couldn't convert a third down, we couldn't protect, and we struggled running the football. Other than that, I don't know.

On what it would take for him to make a quarterback change...
I'm not ready to make a quarterback change. We have to get better play at quarterback. We have to get better at a lot of things. You look at yourself first, and there are things that clearly we all need to do.

On how angry he is right now...
Pretty angry. I'm disappointed. I thought our fans deserved a heck of a lot better than this. We had a packed stadium and played like...we played terrible.

On whether he had news on the foot injury to WR Santonio Holmes...
No, I have not.

On if he thought of making a quarterback change in the fourth quarter to give Greg McElroy
experience...
No, it would be hard to get McElroy because he's not up. I did not think of that.

On if this was as bad a loss as he has had a Jets coach...
Yeah, no question. I can't remember getting beat the way we got beat. I don't think that's ever happened.

On what it was like coaching the fourth quarter while he was angry...
It's not a position that we're used to being in or that I am use to being in. It's not one that I ever want to go through again. My dad always said, ‘If you stay in it long enough, it'll happen to you again.' I certainly don't look forward to that day.

On if he believes the second half was more about heart and toughness than X's and O's...
I can tell you this: it was certainly about execution. They out-executed us. Our guys are tough and have plenty of heart. We just never executed. We didn't get off blocks well enough. We didn't tackle well enough. We have to look at it from a schematics standpoint and determine if we're putting our players in the best position to be successful. I don't know that answer right now.

On whether Mark Sanchez had an explanation for not protecting the ball...
It's a huge mistake. He's trying to make a guy miss, he's trying to make a play down the field, but in that area, you just have to protect the football first. In his competitiveness, he's trying to make a play for us. He makes that first guy miss, (he) tries to keep the play alive and it's just unfortunate.

On whether this is the same team he thought he had three weeks ago...

Obviously, I know the character of the men in that room and that's what I'm betting on. We'll get it done. We'll get it fixed. It's just not going to be easy. Obviously, if it was easy, we would've fixed it before. Clearly we have to look at it. We have to look deep and we have to get better. And like I said, our fans deserve a lot better than this. I know right now, we're not even close to being one of the better teams in this league, not even close. But we need to start being (better), and we need to start (now because) at the end of the year, that's where you want to be. Clearly, we're not close to that right now.

On missed tackles...
It's frustrating. There's no doubt. It's hard to practice because you can't afford to get somebody hurt and all that. We can't afford to keep missing tackles, either. One week, maybe you can accept it, but you have to keep going. I know we emphasize it, but clearly, we have to do a much better job of tackling.

On Sanchez's completion percentage being under 50 percent for the third consecutive game...
I think a lot of it has to do with the kind of duress he's under. When he can set his feet, he can make those throws. Now, he missed some today, (he) hasn't been as accurate as he's been in the past, but it's something that we clearly have to get better at. We have to take what we do on the practice field (and) bring it over to the game field. We weren't great this week at throwing the football on the practice field. I thought we played better, I thought we did some good things on the practice field, I thought our defense was outstanding, (our) communication (and) everything else, especially in the backend. Actually, (we) did decent back there, but it doesn't matter. If you can't stop the run better than we did, then it really doesn't matter.

On if he would consider making changes in the starting lineups...
If we think that will help us, then sure, we'll look into that. I'm not sure if that will help, but we'll look at everything these next couple days.

On why he won't consider making a quarterback change...
I don't think that's the answer. I think Mark's the answer at quarterback.

On if he won't consider making a quarterback change because Tebow is not the answer or
because Sanchez is the answer...
I think Mark is the answer. Again, time will tell.

On if Sanchez's contract is part of the reason why he won't consider a quarterback change...
Contract has nothing to do with it.

The New York Jets were completely embarrassed Sunday against the San Francisco 49ets, losing 34-0 and turning the ball over five times at home. Head coach Rex Ryan has never been one to hide his feelings or mince his words, so after this game, which is up there with the worst losses of his head coaching career, he was bound to say something worth quoting, and he didn't disappoint. From his post-game press conference:

"I was going to say we got our butt kicked, but we got our ass kicked," Ryan said. "We go in and it should be 7-3 at halftime, but instead it's 10-0 because of mistakes we make. Then we come out and turn the ball over four times... Obviously it's unacceptable. We gotta look at it. It starts with the coaches. I've given the players [the day off] Monday and Tuesday."

"They gotta dig deep," Ryan continued. "They gotta look down at themselves. We have to look as coaches as what we're doing, because I've never given up so many rushing yards in my life. So what can we do to help? You can't just say it's poor tackling or this and that. There must be something to it, so we're going to find out. But clearly we're not going to beat anybody when you play like that, like we did today."

The Jets face the 4-0 Texans next week, so they're going to need a massive turnaround to have a chance. Their best player, Darrelle Revis, is out, wide receiver Santonio Holmes may miss the game and Mark Sanchez played another vastly subpar game. These are tough times for the Jets, folks.

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan says Tim Tebow will not be replacing Mark Sanchez as the team's starting quarterback.

Tim Tebow threw his first pass Sunday as a member of the New York Jets -- a completion. During a 34-0 loss by the Jets to the San Francisco 49ers our first calls for Tebow to replace Mark Sanchez at quarterback.

Jets' coach Rex Ryan is not listening, however. Despite the lopsided loss and a miserable 13-of-29 for 103 yards and an interception performance from Sanchez, Ryan has no plans to make a change at quarterback for the 2-2 Jets

."I'm not ready to make a quarterback change," Ryan said. "Obviously we've got to get better play at quarterback and we got to get better play at a lot of things. You look at yourself first and there's things we clearly all need to do.

"Mark's the answer at quarterback."

Sanchez' passer rating for the day was an atrocious 39.9.

NFL.com opined that "If Sanchez is the answer, there needs to be a better question."

There never really was any question this day would come, the only thing no one knew was when. Well, the time for the Tebow calls has now arrived in full force.
