The New York Giants aren't in Kansas, or their 2012 run to Super Bowl glory, any longer. The defending champions are in a new season, and they are now 0-1 after a disappointing 24-17 loss to the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday during which the Giants did not play well.
↵
Quarterback Eli Manning called the loss "a reality check" during an appearance Thursday on WFAN with Mike Francesa.
↵
"I think sometimes you need a little reality check to say, ‘Hey we were praised for a long time.' When you win six straight games like we did last year and then you go seven months without playing any games you kind of just get ... you go out there and you are going to win," Manning said. "You like to have that attitude, but you gotta make sure you prepare yourself to the uttermost and have that great desire and that great fight in you to go get that win and give it everything that it takes, so we just gotta get back into that mentality and make sure we are doing everything possible to go out there and get a win."
↵
Head coach Tom Coughlin made 'Build The Bridge' from last season's success to this year a theme for the Giants. Right now, the bridge is not looking well-constructed.
↵
-- See Big Blue View for more about the Giants
↵

When cornerback Michael Coe left the New York Giants' 24-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday night with a hamstring injury that left the already depleted Giants' secondary razor-thin at the cornerback position. Coe said Thursday he was uncertain if he could have continued, and doesn't know if he will miss any time.

"I just didn’t know if I could just really turn it over and just really run," said Coe, who was making his first career start. "I’m feeling pretty good. I’ll see really after these next couple of days how it is, but I actually feel real good and I’m still able to move around."

The Giants don't play again until Sept. 16 when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If Coe isn't ready, will the man he was replacing in the lineup -- Prince Amukamara -- be able to play? Amukamara missed the opener with a high-ankle sprain. The second-year cornerback is targeting the Buccaneers' game for his return, but said he has not been cleared to begin running so that timetable is up in the air.

"I know that I can’t rush it. I know that it’s just time that it takes for it to heal," Amukamara said. "the natural feeling is to feel that sense of urgency, that sense of pressure, but I know I’m just worried about the things I can control and that’s just my rehab. I can’t control the time that it takes to heal."

If neither Coe nor Amukamara is able to play the Giants would turn to veteran Justin Tryon. They may also be forced to look for an additional cornerback to add to the roster.

New York Giants rookie David Wilson made himself a list of lofty goals shortly before his rookie season formally began on Wednesday night. Rest assured that two carries for four yards, a fumble and an abrupt game over wasn’t one of them.

The burner out of Virginia Tech and the Giants’ first-round pick was stripped of the football by Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee after taking a toss to the left side from Eli Manning in the first quarter. Once safety Barry Church recovered the ball, Wilson headed straight to the sidelines, never again to see another snap out of the backfield.

"I saw him. I mean it just happened, fumbles," Wilson told reporters after the game. "Can’t let it happen no more though.

"When you fumble, you want to put it behind you and move forward with the game, but I didn’t get another offensive play in. It’s hard to put it behind you when that’s the last play you can remember, but I understand the coaches… I know I didn’t have much room for error being a rookie and then having a critical error like that, like a turnover. You just live and you learn and you move forward."

via assets.sbnation.com

Once on the sidelines, Wilson was caught on camera emotional and consoled by Hakeem Nicks, Osi Umenyiora and running backs coach Jerald Ingram. Some accused Wilson of crying. He insisted he wasn’t, but you can expect him to plead an emotional – and physical case – to earn back Tom Coughlin’s trust over the next 10 days before the Giants resume their season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium.

"He’s a rookie. Everybody makes mistakes. We all make mistakes," Umenyiora said. "He just made one and he’s a helluva football player, a very talented back. He’s going to respond. I just needed to let him know that no one was disappointed in him. We’ve all made those mistakes before and he’s going to step up and help this team win."

Wilson also lost his kickoff return responsibilities to Andre Brown before bringing back one more in the fourth quarter, but with such growing pains come the humility of lessons learned. The theme can actually extend to the rest of the Giants, who clearly didn’t bring their ‘A’ game before a national television audience. Linebacker Spencer Paysinger Tweeted, "Humble pie is disgusting...but we gotta eat it. #BackToWork." Coughlin, who preached to "build a bridge" from last season’s success, was just as blunt in assessing a project that is a long way towards completion, longer than anyone realized.

"Take a bite out of humble pie, is basically what it is," Coughlin said. "It brings you right back down to Earth. There won’t be any more blowing smoke up their rear ends. Last year is last year. This year is this year."

You can point to a lot of reasons why the New York Giants lost to the Dallas Cowboys, 24-17, Wednesday night. Coach tom Coughlin certainly had a laundry list of them in his post-game press conference.

"Very disappointing, very disappointing loss. Any way you want to look at it. We fumble the ball after a nice drive that possibly could have been points, we don’t score from the one-yard line. We give up big plays in the second half. We don’t really stop the run, they had all kinds of yardage, we had little or none."

Here is SB Nation New York's list of the five primary reasons the Giants are now 0-1.

[Related: 'Kudos & Wet Willies | Big Blue View]

1. They can't run the football -- The giants had the worst rushing attack in the league a season ago. It really didn't look any better Wednesday night. The 19 carries for 82 yards (a 4.3 yards per carry average) is misleading. Thirty-three of those yards came on one quick hitter by Ahmad Bradshaw when the Cowboys were playing pass.

When the Giants needed to run, like when they had first-and-goal inside the Dallas 2-yard line in the second quarter, they couldn't.

If the giants can't run, they can't play-action pass. If they can't play-action pass, Eli Manning will get harassed all night. Like he did Wednesday. And the Giants won't score enough points. Which they didn't on Wednesday.

2. They couldn't cover anybody -- Corey Webster is their best corner and he was repeatedly torched. Michael Coe, subbing for the injured Prince Amukamara, who was subbing for the injured Terrell Thomas, was abused. When Coe got hurt, Justin Tryon -- subbing for all of the above -- was terrible.

"We had trouble stopping the slant all night long like we’ve never seen a slant before," said Coughlin.

They pretty much had trouble covering everything. Sideline routes. Go-routes. Dallas receivers were wide open all night.

3. DeMarco Murray ran wild -- While the Giants could not get a run game going, Dallas running back Demarco Murray ripped off huge chunks of yardage in the second half. He is a tremendous player and a very physical back. You wonder, though, if without defensive tackles Chris Canty and Marvin Austin to help in the middle the Giants simply wore down. Murray finished with 131 yards on 20 carries.

4. Tony Romo's escapability -- Romo completed 22-of-29 passes for 307 yards and three touchdowns. The Giants' vaunted pass rush sacked him only twice. He consistently used his athleticism to get out of trouble, extend plays and pick up yardage on his own when he needed to.

5. Missed opportunities -- They got inside the Dallas 30 in the first quarter and came away with no points thanks to a David Wilson fumble. They started a drive inside the Dallas 2-yard line and could only get a field. So, out of a possible 14 points on those possessions the Giants got 3. You can't win that way.

New York Giants fans are looking for answers after the team lost to the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday, 24-17. Big Blue View writer Ed Valentine watched the entire game and came up with five things that he and other fans learned about the Giants on Wednesday.

Valentine first brings up the fact that the Giants' rushing numbers could be misleading to the naked eye.

1. The Giants still can't run

Other than one 33-yard run when the Cowboys were playing pass, the Giants averaged 2.7 yards per rushing play (49 yards on 18 tries). Not good. Despite the emphasis on improving here, the Giants still can't consistently block in the run game.

The next thing that Valentine brings up is for help in the secondary.

2. The Giants need Prince Amukamara

Michael Coe was so-so before getting hurt. Justin Tryon was awful when forced to replace Coe. The Giants need Amukamara to get healthy -- fast. And they need him to play like a first-round pick -- fast.

The third thing Valentine mentions is one matchup on the offensive line that never seems to go in the Giants' favor.

3. David Diehl still can't block DeMarcus Ware

Right tackle, left tacke it doesn't matter. Get Ware lined up over Diehl and that is bad for the Giants. Ware had two sacks Wednesday, beating Diehl both times.

Thankfully, not all of Valentine's points are negative. He gives a compliment to wide reciever Domenik Hixon, who caught three passes for 55 yards on Wednesday, all coming off of knee injuries.

4. Domenik Hixon looks great

Hixon sure doesn't look like a guy who has missed most of the last two years with ACL injuries. He has no hesitation, and he can still make plays. Terrell Thomas can only wish his recovery had gone that well.

The last point that Valentine has to say about the Giants is about the no-nonsense style of head coach Tom Coughlin.

5. Tom Coughlin still has no tolerance for rookie mistakes

David Wilson fumbled. David Wilson disappeared. After his fumble cost the Giants a first-half scoring opportunity he never played another down on offense. After Wilson failed to field a kickoff cleanly Andre Brown was suddenly the return man.

The New York Giants' next game is against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Sept. 16 at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be televised on Fox.

In addition to a season-opening loss, which they suffered Wednesday night at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys by a 24-17 score, the one thing the New York Giants definitely did not need is another injury at the cornerback position. Unfortunately, they got that, too.

Michael Coe, starting in place of Prince Amukamara, left the game late in the third quarter after breaking up a potential touchdown pass to Kevin Ogletree. Amukamara, of course, is the starter because Terrell Thomas is once again on Injured Reserve. Cornerback Bruce Johnson is also on IR.

Coe, to be honest, did not play all that well. He got burned on several slant routes and a good portion of Ogletree's 114 receiving yards came at his expense. Coe's replacement, Justin Tryon, was absolutely torched by allas. Tryon surrendered a 34-yard touchdown pass to Miles Austin on a first-and-30 play that gave Dallas a 24-10 lead with 6:12 to play. Needing a stop right before the two-minute warning to get the ball back, Tryon surrendered a 13-yard completion to Ogletree on third-and-10 and the Cowboys ran out the clock from there.

Coe said after the game he thought we would be able to play when the Giants face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2 (Sept. 16). Amukamara (high ankle sprain) also hopes to be ready by then.

Those would be positive developments for the Giants. It was obvious Wednesday night that they need all the help they can get at cornerback.

Behind a breakout performance from wide receiver Kevin Ogletree, who caught seven passes for 101 receiving yards and two touchdowns, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the New York Giants, 24-17, in a season-opening showdown at MetLife Stadium.

Dallas quarterback Tony Romo completed 22 of 39 passes for 307 passing yards and three touchdowns, including a 34-yarder to wide receiver Miles Austin that helped the Cowboys take a 24-10 lead with 6 minutes, 12 seconds reaming in the game.

With 2:36 to go, the Giants capped a 12-play, 79-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown reception from tight end Martellus Bennett from quarterback Eli Manning to help trim Dallas' lead to 24-17. But the Cowboys cemented their victory when they were able to convert a first down on their final possession, allowing them to run out the clock.

Cowboys' running back DeMarco Murray finished the contest with a game-high 131 rushing yards on 20 carries. The Giants totaled just 82 yards on the ground, most of it coming on a 33-yard run by running back Ahmad Bradshaw (17 carries, 78 yards).

Eli Manning finished 21-for-32 for 213 passing yards and one touchdown, while wide receiver Victor Cruz caught a team-high six passes for 58 receiving yards.

A 10-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Kevin Ogletree from quarterback Tony Romo with 1 minute, 10 seconds to go in the second quarter has helped the Dallas Cowboys take a 7-3 halftime lead over the New York Giants.

Ogletree's reception capped a solid seven-play, 73-yard march that answered a small-scoring drive by the Giants, who took a 3-0 lead on a Lawrence Tynes' 22-yard field goal that came with 9:14 to go in the half.

Tynes' kick capped a disappointing four-play, (-3)-yard drive that was setup by an interception from New York linebacker Michael Boley, who snagged a pass from Romo out of the air and it ran down to the Cowboys' two-yard line.

After a horse-collar-tackle penalty was called on the Dallas offense and the ball was moved to the one-yard line, the Giants' offense failed to punch the ball into the end zone.

In the first quarter, the Giants had a drive move down to the Cowboys' 29-yard line but it ended abruptly after running back David Wilson was stripped by Cowboys' linebacker Sean Lee. The ball was picked up by safety Barry Church who was tackled at the Dallas 30-yard line.
