A day after trading for catcher Kelly Shoppach, the New York Mets made a roster move Wednesday to make room for their new acquisition, as they sent catcher Rob Johnson to Triple-A Buffalo. Shoppach was not listed in the Mets' lineup Wednesday when knuckleballer R.A. Dickey was scheduled to take the mound for the Mets against the Cincinnati Reds (7:10 p.m. ET on SNY).

This was Johnson's second stint with the Mets this season, and the backup has compiled a .250 batting average with four RBI in just 52 at-bats.

Because of his lack of hitting and consistency with the glove, Johnson was a no-brainer to be sent down for the Mets, who are trying to stay in the postseason race.

On Tuesday, the New York Mets added a new player to their major league roster.

Kelly Shoppach was acquired from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later. The trade essentially provides quality competition for incumbent backstop Josh Thole and all but guarantees the end of Mike Nickeas seeing any real time.

Over at Amazin' Avenue, blogger Eno Sarris is concerned about Shoppach's shoddy defense, but overall is pleased with general manager Sandy Alderson's move:

"...the tandem [Rob Johnson and Nickeas] he'll replace wasn't great with the glove either, and this team has not placed a great emphasis on defense. That makes Kelly Shoppach a great fit for his new team, if only for the next six weeks. The 32-year-old will be a free agent for the first time this offseason, after making $1.35 million in his last year of arbitration."

At this point, the Mets don't have much to lose in this low-risk gamble for Shoppach.
