The London 2012 games are over, and the United States ran away with the race to the top of the medal count. Before waiting four years to waste two weeks of the summer paying ludicrous amounts of attention to sports you didn't know you cared about, why not check out how local athletes fared in the 2012 games?

14 athletes from the New York area brought home a medal of some type: the most wins, as one would expect, came in the pool, as Ryan Lochte, Dana Vollmer, Cullen Jones, and Rebecca Soni each returned from London with multiple decorations, including three golds for the Syracuse native Vollmer. Elsewhere, tri-state area athletes combined, such as the three members of the women's soccer team hailing from the area. All told, New York-area athletes brought home 23 medals in 19 different events.

Here's a full list of the NYC area's medalists:

Justin Gatlin, Brooklyn, NY, athletics, silver (4x100m relay) bronze (100m)

Ryan Lochte, Canandaigua, NY, swimming, 2x gold (400m IM, 4x200m Free) 2x silver (200m IM, 4x100m Free) bronze (200m back)

Brigetta Barrett, Westchester, NY, athletics, silver, high jump

Lia Neal, New York, NY, swimming, bronze (4x100m free)

Also winning gold were three representatives of New York teams on the Team USA men's basketball squad: Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler did Knicks fans proud, with Anthony setting the American single game Olympic scoring reord against Nigeria, while Deron Williams will be able to play his first year in Brooklyn as a two-time Olympic champion.

Here's a nifty little map of where Team USA medalists call home:

New York's local athletes were brilliant in the Olympics, combining to register 23 medals over 14 athletes. Included in that group are Ryan Lochte from Canandaigua, N.Y., who won five medals, including two gold, two silver and a bronze in the pool.

Dana Vollmer from Syracuse won three golds in swimming while Cullen Jones from New York City earned a gold and two silvers. In track and field, Justin Gatlin of Brooklyn has a silver and bronze medal draped around his neck.

The last medals have been given out in London, and the United States is far and away the leader in both overall and gold medal counts, thanks in part to athletes from around the New York metro area.

The United States was dominant in the pool and continued to be strong on the track and by earning medals in a variety of team sports, leading to a double-digit lead in overall medals and a eight-gold advantage as well.

From Syracuse's Dana Vollmer, who won three golds in the pool and set a world record in the 100m butterfly to Westchester's Brigetta Barrett, who medalled on the second-to-last day of competition by earning silver in the high jump, New York athletes made an impact from start to finish. The Bronx's Cullen Jones took a pair of silvers in swimming, while the gold medal-winning women's soccer team featured Abby Wambach, Tobin Heath, and Heather O'Reilly from the area. And three players who have made NYC their professional home - Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler, and Deron Williams - were on the Team USA squad that brought home men's basketball gold.

Here's the final medal standings:

United States, 104 (46 gold, 29 silver, 29 bronze)

China, 87 (38, 27, 22)

What do The Spice Girls, The Who, Adele, and Eric Idle from Monty Python have in common? We're not sure, and we're also not sure that whoever is in charge of the closing ceremony is sure, but they'll all be performing at tonight's event as London hands over its duties as Olympic host to Rio de Janeiro.

The finale of the Olympics doesn't typically have the pomp of its opening counterpart, but it serves as an opportunity to put a lid on the past two weeks of sports. There will be music and plenty of looks back at the various accomplishments that took place during the London games with an eye towards 2016 in Brazil.

The ceremony will be broadcast via tape-delay on NBC, starting at 8:30 p.m., but unlike the Opening Ceremony, will also be available for live-streaming via NBC's official website after the network's policy of keeping the United States in the dark about what the rest of the world had already seen took criticism. The ceremonies will start at 4 p.m.

The United States women's basketball team won its fifth straight Olympic title with an 86-50 win over France on Saturday at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. While France was clearly overmatched, the squad is plenty proud to be taking home the silver, its first medal ever in the event.

The French were within three points, 24-21, with 7:26 left to play in the first half. The United States outscored them 13-4 until halftime, however, and continued to cruise from there. Candace Parker led all players with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sue Bird scored 11 and Dina Taurasi added nine with six assists.

The French were led by Edwige Lawson Wade and Sandrine Gruda, who scored 12 points apiece.

The win extended United States' winning streak in the event to 41 games.
