The New York Mets absolutely had to have Thursday's affair against the Washington Nationals. They got it.

The Amazins beat Washington, 9-5, at Nationals Park and snapped their six-game losing skid behind R.A. Dickey (13-1, 2.72 ERA) and David Wright.

Dickey wasn't superb, but he was very effective in his 7.1 innings of work. The knuckleballer extraordinaire surrendered four runs (three earned) on 10 hits, while striking out five batters and walking just one.

Conversely, Gio Gonzalez was battered early and often by New York. The lefty gave up six runs (all earned) in 3.1 innings on six hits and three walks, while watching two home runs get belted off him.

One of those bombs was in the first, a two-run shot by Wright. The second was off the bat of Ike Davis of the solo variety.

Wright also added another homer in the sixth off of Craig Stammen, another two-run blast to extend the Mets lead to 9-1. Overall, Wright ended the afternoon onslaught 2-for-4 with those two home runs and five RBI.

Ruben Tejada and Andres Torres were masterful at setting the table all day for Wright, with Tejada going 2-for-4 and scoring twice while Torres went 3-for-4 with a walk and scoring three runs of his own.

The Mets were able to stay above .500 and now head home for a crucial three-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The New York Mets at least made it interesting on Wednesday night. After another round of bullpen struggles and a lack of offense, they nearly closed a three-run deficit in the ninth inning before ultimately falling to the Washington Nationals by a final score of 4-3.

Starting pitcher Chris Young gave the Mets a solid six innings, allowing a pair of runs in the sixth when Adam LaRoche sent one over the fence. That scored Bryce Harper and put New York in a 2-0 hole. Aside from the home run, it was a solid outing from Young after getting smacked around to the tune of five runs in three innings by the Braves in his last outing.

In the seventh inning, Andres Torres put the Mets on the board. He hit a single to right that scored Lucas Duda, cutting it to a one-run deficit. At that point the bull pen made its contribution in the loss.

Miguel Batista came in to work the seventh. After getting two outs, he allowed a pair of singles, before a double from Stephen Lombardozzi drove in both runners to make it 4-1.

Things got interesting again in the top of the ninth. David Wright opened the inning with a solo shot over to right-center. With two outs, Jason Bay came to the plate, driving the ball over the left field wall for his fifth home run of the year. Jordany Valdespin, the pinch hitter, struck out swinging to end the inning.

The loss is the sixth straight for the Mets, who have yet to win a game since the All-Star break. They have another chance on Thursday at 12:35 p.m. Eastern.

The Mets have to hope the rest of this series against the Nationals isn't nearly as interesting as its opener was on Tuesday. Washington beat New York in wild pitch walk off fashion in the 10th inning less than 24 hours ago, and the Mets look to rebound from that defeat.

They'll pit Chris Young (2-3, 4.38 ERA) against Jordan Zimmerman (6-6, 2.48 ERA) in the pitching duel. New York will have its work cut out against the third leg of perhaps the finest pitching staff in baseball at the moment. Recent history isn't favorable to the Mets, as the Nationals have taken nine of the last 11 meetings against them.

The Mets are on a five-game losing skid and they've been outscored 33-17 in that span. New York has also dropped seven of its last 10 outings.

The New York Mets lost Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals, 5-4, in 10 innings at Nationals Park. The game ended on a Pedro Beato wild pitch with two outs and the bases loaded. Ryan Zimmerman scored the winning run, handing the Mets a fifth straight loss.

Jordany Valdespin pinch hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning for what at the time seemed like an improbable comeback for the Mets. Down 2-0, Valdespin took Nats closer Tyler Clippard deep to center field for his fifth home run of the season. Bobby Parnell earned his fifth blown save of the season in the bottom of the inning, however, as Danny Espinosa hit an RBI single to send the game to extra innings.

Josh Thole gave the Mets the lead once again with double to center scoring David Murphy. The 4-3 lead was short lived, however.

Tim Byrdak (2-1) was credited with the loss and his second blown save of the season after giving up an RBI triple to Bryce Harper with just one out in the inning. The Mets intentionally walked Zimmerman and Ian Desmond to load the bases and set up a double play. Adam LaRoche grounded to first and Harper was forced out at home for the second out.

Beato came in for Byrdak as Tyler Moore came up for his fifth plate appearance of the night. Thole mishandled Beato's pitch outside and low behind home plate, allowing Zimmerman to score from third base.

Jonathon Niese started and pitched well for the Mets, giving up just three hits and striking out eight in seven innings. A solo home run to Moore in the fifth inning was his only blemish on the night. The Nats took a 2-0 lead in the eighth inning on a Scott Lombardozzi double scoring Mark DeRosa off Josh Edgin.

Nationals starter Ross Detwiler gave up just five hits and struck out four in his seven innings on the mound. Neither starting pitcher gave up a walk on the night.

Game 2 of the series is set for 7:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Chris Young (2-3, 4.28 ERA) will take on the Nats' Jordan Zimmermann (6-6, 2.48) at the mound.

For the first time since being admitted to a hospital for a blood clot issues in his throwing arm, New York Mets pitcher Dillon Gee talked to reporters Tuesday via conference all and explained his medical condition and future for this season.

According to ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin, who quoted Gee from his Twitter feed, the sophomore hurler was discharged from the hospital Monday and he hopes to be throwing again in six weeks. Luckily, said Gee, the artery damage, caused by a clot, wasn't life threatening but could have cause sever artery and tissue damage if it wasn't caught in time. Gee admitted he has had numbness in his hand for years which doctors say was caused by repetitive throwing.

Gee said he would like to return for this year, but odds are against that considering he can't resume throwing until six weeks.

The New York Mets were one of the feel-good stories of the first half. Their first three games after the break, however, have set them back in a way that makes the next stretch of games the most pivotal of the season. Losers of their last four, the Mets (46-43) visit the Washington Nationals (51-36) for a three-game series. Tuesday's game will begin at 7:05 p.m. EST and be televised on SNY.

New York will face the National League-best Nationals in six of their next nine games -- and the three others are against the 48-43 Los Angeles Dodgers -- meaning this stretch could be season-defining. Already six games out of the NL East, the Mets need to win these series or be put in a hole that leaves the Wild Card their only playoff realistic route; it's also a spot the Mets have fallen to three back in.

On the hill Tuesday will be Jonathan Niese, who is coming off his worst start of the season -- seven runs in seven innings against the Cubs -- but enjoyed a solid first half with a 7-4 record, 3.73 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings. He'll look to stop the bleeding against another young lefty, Ross Detwiler, who has a 3.43 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 4-3 record. The Nats' lefty has twirled seven scoreless innings (partially in relief) with seven strikeouts against New York this season. Niese has a 2-0 mark with a 3.42 ERA versus the Nats in his career, though Tuesday will be his first start against them this year.

While the Mets miss Stephen Strasburg in this series, the Nationals' rotation is the best in the game, and they won't be able to avoid the sensational talents of Jordan Zimmermann (6-6, 2.48 ERA) and Gio Gonzalez (12-4, 2.93 ERA, 10.62 K/9). Despite just a .246/.312/.373 line against southpaws, the Mets' best chance for a victory in the series is in Game 1. Wednesday, Chris Young (2-3, 4.28 ERA) will take the hill, while R.A. Dickey (12-1, 2.66 ERA, 9.14 K/9) will look to get back on track in Thursday's finale.

Washington is coming off an uneven four-game series against the Miami Marlins in which they alternated wins and losses; the latest result was a 5-3 loss. The Nationals' hitting has been a little better lately, but it's their dominant pitching that has carried them. Are the Mets for real? We'll get some answers to that question over the next three games.
