Joey Chestnut won his sixth straight Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island in Brooklyn on Wednesday.

By downing 68 hot dogs and buns, Chestnut tied his own personal record which also doubles as the event record. The San Jose, Calif., native won $10,000 as the first place prize, tying Takeru Kobayashi with his sixth victory in the world's most prestigious hot dog eating contest.

Kobayashi did not compete again this year because of a contractual dispute. It was the third straight year he did not compete against Chestnut for the title, this time opting to join the inaugural Crifs Dogs Classic in Brooklyn.

Tim Janus finished a distant second with 52 hot dogs eaten, enough to take home the second-place prize of $5,000. He improved on his performance from last year, when he finished in third place.

Sonya Thomas of Alexandria, Va., chomped down 45 hot dogs to win the women's competition.

There are many things that traditionally go along with the Fourth of July. One of those has become the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island in Brooklyn. Joey Chestnut will be seeking his sixth straight title in the event.

Takeru Kobayashi will once again not be competing due to a contractual dispute. Kobayashi sat down with SB Nation's Amy K. Nelson to discuss the situation, and that video is after the jump.

The men's event will be held at noon, and will be broadcast by ESPN via tape delay at 3 p.m. ET. It will also be streamed online via ESPN3. The women's championship will be held at 11:30 a.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN3.

Kobayashi will not be competing for the third consecutive year. Here, in an interview with Nelson, he explains the reasons why.
