Webb Simpson thought his ball might have been resting on top of a sprinkler head in the rough next to the 18th green on Sunday at the Olympic Club, so he asked for a ruling on whether he could receive a free drop.

It was the final round of the 2012 U.S. Open, and Simpson was tied for the lead. He didn't know, but Jim Furyk was in the process of bogeying the 16th hole, leaving a window for Simpson to seize the advantage if he could get up and down from the rough.

Simpson was told he could not get a drop. Instead, he chipped to within three feet and sunk the putt to remain 1-over par. When Furyk and Graeme McDowell both failed to birdie the 18th, Simpson became the U.S. Open champion.

After four rigorous rounds of golf, Webb Simpson took hold of his first major victory at the 2012 U.S. Open. He can be even more satisfied having done it at one of the toughest courses going, the Olympic Club of San Francisco.

Simpson won with a furious charge on Sunday to blow by a struggling Jim Furyk, who just couldn't make any shots to close out the tournament. Graeme McDowell was right there all weekend, but he couldn't overtake Simpson at the end.

Tiger Woods never made the move some expected on Sunday. After looking like the favorite the first two days, Woods came apart with a 75 on Saturday, knocking him off the top of the leaderboard.

The real story was Simpson, who made key putts down the stretch and a sensational run of four birdies in five holes. Simpson was able to stay on track despite nerves, challenging pin locations and, at times, unfortunate weather.

Webb Simpson made some spending money over the weekend. He can feel free to have a very big wish list when he goes to the mall.

Simpson won his first major by conquering the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco on Sunday evening. Simpson was paid a handsome sum for his troubles, to the tune of $1.44 million. Not too shabby for four rounds of golf.

The rest of the top ten finishers also took home a little bit more than a gift bag, all earning in the six-figure range. After playing on one of the toughest courses in recent memory, the purses were well-deserved.

Tiger Woods still feels confident in his game after having a rough weekend at the U.S. Open.

After looking like a strong contender for the first two days of the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Tiger Woods faltered on Saturday and was never able to recover.

Woods shot a 75 on moving day and ended his tournament with a 73, finishing six strokes behind the eventual winner, Webb Simpson.

Despite falling short of taking home the major, Woods feels good about where his game is headed.

"There are a lot of positives this week," said Woods. "I hit the ball really well and unfortunately I just didn't have the speed of the greens until today."

Woods is starting to see a payoff from working with Sean Foley, his swing coach.

"I'm excited about the consistency of it, how well I hit the ball all week really. I didn't really miss it that badly this week, the miss was just a fraction off which is great, that's what we want to have happen."

Now, Woods just has to move on and continue to hone his game in an effort to recapture more glorious times.

"I had a chance this week and, you know, I'll get after it in another week in D.C."

Webb Simpson won the 2012 U.S. Open with a 2-under 68 on Sunday at the Olympic Club. He overtook Jim Furyk from the clubhouse to finish at 1-over for the Open. Simpson shot 2-over through his first five holes, but recovered with four birdies on his next five holes on the unforgiving course.

Furyk entered Sunday tied for the lead with Graeme McDowell at 1-under overall. He faltered down the back stretch, however, shooting bogeys on hole Nos. 13, 16 and 18 to drop to 4-over on the day, and 3-over for the tournament.

McDowell started the day 5-over through the front nine. He shot 1-under over the back nine, including a birdie on No. 17 to put him one stroke off Simpson. McDowell missed a roughly 10-foot putt for birdie on No. 18, however, giving Simpson his first win at a major tournament.

McDowell finished at 2-over along with Day 1 leader Michael Thompson. Furyk finished at 3-over along with David Toms, John Peterson, Padraig Harrington and Jason Dufner.

Jim Furyk is at 1-over through nine holes at the 2012 U.S. Open, and even overall as hangs on to a one stroke lead over Webb Simpson. Furyk has parred every single hole at the Olympic Club outside of a bogey on No. 6 on Sunday. He has the back nine left to play.

Simpson has shot 2-under through 11 holes, coming off an impressive 68 on Saturday. He is on a particularly strong tear at the moment, having birdied four of his last six holes after starting the day plus-2 through five.

Michael Thompson and John Peterson are well within striking distance, just two shot off the lead. Thompson finished the day at 3-under to give himself a chance at a U.S. Open title from the clubhouse, presuming he gets some help from the two men ahead of him. Peterson is 1-under Sunday with three holes left to play.

St. John's grad Keegan Bradley finished his fourth round at the 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA with a 7-over-par 77. That round put Bradley at 18-over-par for the tournament.

The poor finish to the U.S. Open could hurt Bradley's chances of making the Ryder Cup team. Qualification for the team is based on a points system drawn from a player's finish in major championships and other events. The top eight players automatically qualify for the team. Bradley is currently in the eighth spot but seems destined to finish behind Steve Stricker and and Rickie Fowler in the U.S. Open. Stricker is currently 11th and Fowler is currently 9th in the standings.

After three rounds at the 2012 U.S. Open, St. John's graduate Keegen Bradley currently stands at 11-over, well out of contention. Despite that, he should still have plenty of motivation for Round 4. Bradley is on pace to qualify for the U.S. team in the 2012 Ryder Cup, and his performance on Sunday will have a direct impact on that.

Qualifying for the Ryder Cup is based on a points system, with the basis for points being prize money won in major championships and other official events. The top eight men in the standings automatically qualify for a spot on the team, and Bradley currently sits in eighth. Some of the men not far behind him in the standings, like Rickie Fowler and Steve Stricker, are ahead of him at the U.S. Open. After posting a 73 in each of the first two rounds, Bradley struggled on Saturday and posted a 75. If he wants to avoid losing ground in the Ryder Cup standings, he'll need his best performance of the week in Round 4.
