Via Daily Racing Forum comes the news that Dullahan and Trinniberg will skip the 2012 Preakness, instead focusing their efforts on the Belmont Stakes. They join former Kentucky Derby favorite Union Rags, who according to ESPN will skip the Preakness. Dullahan took third place in the Kentucky Derby, and Trinniberg was heavily involved in the race. Dale Romans, Dullahan's trainer, believes the horse is in fine condition to run the race, but ultimately owner Jerry Crawford made the opposite call.

“Dale Romans loves the way Dullahan came out of the Kentucky Derby and believes we could win the Preakness,” Crawford said. “But we believe we have a 3-year-old ‘Horse of the Year’ candidate and that his future is best served by not asking him to race for the third time in just five weeks in the Preakness.”

The Preakness was already shaping up for a strong focus on a rematch between Bodemeister and I'll Have Another, and the absence of Dullahan and Trinniberg just makes that more so.

Will there be a Triple Crown at stake when Belmont Stakes is run on June 11 at Belmont Park? For that to be the case Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another is first going to have to negotiate the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, on May 19th.

Owner Paul Reddam left no doubt that I’ll Have Another win run in the Preakness in two weeks, saying “Preakness, here we come.”

Can I’ll Have Another win the Preakness?

“We certainly didn’t know we would win the race today, but we were confident the horse was going to run well. We never really talked about what happens next. Of course, subconsciously that was always the plan, certainly,” Reddam said. “We gave the horse only two preps this year. Part of the idea was we knew we had a good horse, and we wanted to make sure he was fresh because the Triple Crown is a gamble and it looks like it paid off. We’ve only run three times this year, so Preakness, here we come.”

I'll Have Another has won the 138th Kentucky Derby, overtaking the favorite, Bodemeister, in the final 100 yards of the race. Below is a video of the race in its entirety:

As you can see, Bodemeister led for most of the way, with I'll Have Another not reaching the top four until the final stretch. This year's winner ran towards the middle of the pack for most of the race, before turning on the jets during the final stretch to easily overtake Bodemeister for the win, in what was a great finish.

I'll Have Another was ridden by Mario Gutierrez. The 25-year-old was riding in his first career Kentucky Derby. Doug O'Neil was the horse's trainer, and the proud owner of Saturday's winner is J. Paul Reddam.
