Michael Pineda of the New York Yankees was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Tampa Bay, Florida early on Monday morning. According to police reports, the 23-year-old right-handed pitcher was speeding/weaving without his headlights on and had a blood-alcohol level of .128.

Via the New York Post:

The burly Pineda, 23, "had a fixed gaze and his eyes were bloodshot, watery and glassy," a Tampa police officer wrote after pulling the 23-year-old hurler over at 2:35 a.m. on North Dale Mabry Highway.

"I could smell a distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath, and his speech was slurred," the cop wrote about Pineda.

He was released sometime before noon on Monday when he posted $500 bail.

Acquired this past offseason in a trade with the Seattle Mariners, Pineda arrived at spring training over weight and was ultimately lost for the season due to a torn labrum. He is living in Tampa Bay while undergoing rehab for the injury.

Michael Pineda, out for the season with a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder, said Tuesday that he "will come back real strong" and expects to be ready when the New York Yankees open Spring Training in 2013.

Pineda, of course, is the highly-touted 23-year-old right-handed starting pitcher for whom the Yankees dealt top hitting prospect Jesus Montero to the Seattle Mariners. Pineda did not make it through his first Spring Training with New York.

He spoke Tuesday with Sweeny Murti of WFAN. [Complete Transcript]

Pineda told Murti he does not know when he first hurt the shoulder. He said the injury was simply "the life of a baseball player."

"I think the first time (I felt something was) my last start in spring training. I tried to throw hard and I felt pain in my shoulder," Pineda said. "I rested for a couple days and then when I started to play catch again I was feeling really good. But when I threw hard again I could feel pain again."

There was concern throughout the spring that Pineda's velocity was down from the 97 mph he often reached in 2011, and some thought possibly Pineda had reported to Spring Training out of shape. He said that was not the case.

"I do the same thing every off-season. I did the same routine," he said.

Almost a month into the 2012 season, the New York Yankees are already facing a bit of scrutiny as general manager Brian Cashmen is taking heat for trading away catching prospect Jesus Montero for (now) injured pitcher Michael Pineda. The scrutiny, however, is fair, said Cashman on Friday.

"This is a massive decision gone wrong right now,'' Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com on Friday. "So all scrutiny is fair.''

Cashman did, however, say that its too early to judge the move on a long-term basis. And everything was done prior to the trade of Pineda to make sure the young, hard-throwing right-hander was healthy and would be a productive assets to the Yankees pitching staff.

"All I can do is lay out the facts; I can't control what people believe,'' Cashman said. "There are no secrets in Yankeeland, nor should there be. If something's there, it will eventually get out. I'm not going to compound the situation by lying about it.''

"Our fans are right to be upset about this,'' Cashman said. "I'm devastated by it. I just hope everyone understands that every move I make is to improve this club, not hurt it.''

New York begins a three-game set with the visiting Detroit Tigers on Friday, when the face ace Justin Verlander who will oppose sophomore Ivan Nova.

We may now know why Michael Pineda's velocity was down in spring training. The New York Yankees announced Wednesday that Pineda has a torn labrum. He will have surgery on Tuesday and is out for the year.

The 23-year-old Pineda had been placed on the DL at the end of March with shoulder tendinitis. His velocity was down in Spring Training, but said his health was fine until toward the end of camp. He normally throws as high as 97 mph, but was barely cracking the 90s in camp.

The Yankees have relied on 37-year-old Hiroki Kuroda and 35-year-old Freddy Garcia in the rotation since with Pineda's absence, and the two will be even more important now as Pineda is done for the year, unless the Yankees try to make a move.

As time passes and more news begins to trickle out about the shoulder of New York Yankees young hurler Michael Pineda, the more it seems he will not be making his Yankee debut anytime soon. The latest setback seems to have come Tuesday, when Pineda was sent for a second opinion, which according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch, was requested by Pineda's agent.

Pineda did have a dye contrast MRI today at the direction of Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad, and the team is not ready to reveal those results. Presumably, Ahmad and Altchek will confer before an official announcement is made.

Yankee manager Joe Giaradi said the latest news was "disappointing" and he will move on like Pineda will not be available in the near future.

For now, New York is relying on Hirkoki Kuroda, who starts Tuesday night, to fill the void, and will need a struggling Freddie Garcia to turn things around quickly, as Andy Pettitte slowly gets ready for his return in the minor leagues.

The 23 year old pitcher was acquired from the Seattle Mariners during the off-season, in exchange for catching/DH prospect, Jesus Montero.

Pineda has yet to pitch a regular season inning for the Yankees after struggling in spring training and being placed on the 15 day disabled list. His velocity was reportedly down after many thought he came into camp out of shape.

The young pitcher racked up 171 innings for the Mariners last season. He won nine games and struck out 173 batters. He finished the season with an ERA of 3.74 and a K/9 of 9.11. His average fastball was 94.7 miles per hour – the fourth fastest velocity amongst qualified pitchers, behind Alexi Ogando, Justin Verlander and David Price.

New York Yankees starting pitcher Michael Pineda, who was placed on the 15-day DL prior to making a single regular season start with the team, is expected to miss the entire month of April according to Bryan Hoch of Yankees.com.

Pineda struggled with his velocity throughout spring training but denied feeling any pain. But after the 23-year old surrendered six runs in two and two-thirds innings during his final spring training outing, he complained of shoulder discomfort. An MRI revealed no structural damage but Pineda was diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis, a troublesome sign for the young pitcher the Yankees acquired in an offseason trade for Jesus Montero.

Pineda told the Newark Star-Ledger on Wednesday that he is "feeling much better now," but still does not know what he will do for rehab.

The New York Yankees have placed Michael Pineda on the 15-day DL with right shoulder tendinitis, according to multiple reports. The right-hander had an MRI on Saturday morning after being lit up for six runs in two and two-thirds innings on Friday night.

With Pineda now out, Freddy Garcia has seized the final spot in the Yankees rotation and is expected to start the team's fifth game.

Pineda's pitch velocity had been a point of concern all spring training, but he had been adamant about his health before complaining of shoulder soreness after Friday's performance. The 23-year-old, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners for Jesus Montero, normally reaches 95 to 97 MPH on the radar gun but had reportedly rarely topped 91 MPH during spring training.
