Rookie outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis' two-out, bases-load single to right field was the cap on a two-run ninth inning rally for the New York Mets who completed a three-game series sweep of the Miami Marlins on Thursday. The victory helped the Mets (11-8) earn their second sweep and third series win in the month of April.

New York entered the bottom of the ninth down 2-1, and rallied behind four walks from Marlins big-money closer Heath Bell. David Wright, Ike Davis, Josh Thole and Justin Turner each walked, respectfully, which allowed the score to be tied at 2-2. After Scott Hairston grounded out for the second out, Nieuwenhuis hit a 1-0 pitch over the head of a drawn-in Mike Stanton in right field.

Ramon Ramirez earned the win, as he tossed two-scoreless innings of relief. Ramirez came in for starting pitcher Jon Niese who tossed seven innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six.

Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Mets, who as a team collected just six hits.

On Friday, New York travels West to take on the Colorado Rockies in a three-game set at Coors Field.

The Mets will look to polish off the visiting Miami Marlins for a three-game sweep on Thursday afternoon, and they'll hand the ball over to Jonathon Niese to take the mound.

Niese will be opposed by Ricky Nolasco, with each putting their 2-0 records at stake.

The Mets have pitched sensationally this series, surrendering just one run in each of the two games, while the bullpen has not allowed a single run in four and one thirds inning pitched.

The Mets have surprised many during the early portion of the 2012 season, but stand four games back of the red-hot Washington Nationals in the NL East. A sweep against Miami would be extra gratifying for New York, as their best player, Jose Reyes, signed a free agent contract with the Marlins this past offseason.

After winning the first game of the series, the New York Mets will look to secure a series win against the Miami Marlins Wednesday night at Citi Field.

The Mets were able to climb back above .500 with a 2-1 victory last night which saw Johan Santana strike out 11 batters in just six and two third innings.

Josh Johnson struck out nine in the same time frame while only allowing three hits. However, the difference in the game came on a Lucas Duda infield RBI single.

Now, New York hands the ball to R.A. Dickey who is looking to bounce back from a rough outing in Atlanta that saw him get pounded for eight runs and three long balls in just over four innings.

Dickey will be opposed by the newly-acquired Mark Buehrle. The ex-White Sox has pitched well so far to the tune of a 2.66 ERA, despite only having a 1-2 record to show for it.

Buehrle won his last time out, going eight strong innings in a win over the Chicago Cubs.

It will be a good test for the Mets against a pitcher they aren't familiar with.

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 2-1 on Tuesday night, in the first game of a three-game series at Citi Field. Neither team was particularly hot at the plate, but the Mets were able to get on the board late as the Marlins gave up four consecutive walks by four different pitchers in the seventh.

Johan Santana took the mound for the Mets. He played well coming off a disastrous start against the Atlanta Braves a week ago. He pitched six scoreless innings before giving up his first and only earned run in the seventh inning on a Gaby Sanchez double to score Giancarlo Stanton. Ramon Ramirez was immediately brought in for relief following the play, and was able to force a ground out.

The Mets were not unable to score while Santana was on the mound, however. Josh Johnson started, and was on the mound for the Marlins in the bottom of the inning. He was relieved with two outs in the inning by Randy Choate after walking Lucas Duda. Miami needed just one out to move on to the next inning, but Choate promptly walked Justin Turner before being replaced by Steve Cishek, who promptly walked Scott Hairston.

Cishek was then pulled for Mike Dunn with the bases loaded and, sure enough, Dunn walked Josh Thole to send Duda in for the score. Dunn struck out Zach Lutz on the next at-bat, but not before the Mets tied the game at one run apiece.

Dunn was relieved by Edward Mujica to start the Mets' next turn on offense. Mujica gave up the Mets' winning run on a Duda single to score Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Ramirez, Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco did not give up a single hit in relief of Santana to secure the win for New York. Jose Reyes went 0-for-4 from the plate in his return to New York.

As the New York Mets prepare for a three-game set with the Miami Marlins, the team received some bad news about starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey Tuesday as the right-hander will miss his next start due to elbow swelling. Pelfrey could miss more time if it's a ligament tear, which manager Sandy Alderson said it could be.

The Mets will replace him with Robert Carson, but only for a few days before Chris Schwinden is set to start for Pelfrey.

So far this season, Pelfrey has been one of the many early-season bright spots in the Mets' rotation as he's compiled a 2.29 ERA in 19 1/2-innings. New York went 2-1 in his three starts and allowed no home runs while he was on the mound.

Unfortunately, this is the second player Tuesday to go on the DL for the Mets. They placed outfielder Jason Bay on the DL earlier in the day.
