After scoring six runs combined in their first two games against the Los Angeles Angels, the New York Yankees were still awaiting the arrival of their offense.

Sunday night, the Yankees (5-4) finally found their bats, riding two hits apiece from Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira and Raul Ibanez to an 11-5 win over the Angels (3-6) at Yankee Stadium on Jackie Robinson Day. Ivan Nova took the mound for his second start of the season, allowing eight hits and four runs in 6.0 innings of work. Nova struck out eight batters while walking just two, and his ERA now lies at 4.15 for the season.

The win brings the Yankees into a three-way tie with the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the American League East.

Los Angeles sent Jerome Williams to the mound, but he last just 2.2 innings as the Yankees pounced early with one run in the second inning and four in the third. After Angels designated hitter Mark Trumbo homered off Nova in the second, the Yankees responded as Ibanez singled home Cano in the second half of the frame, after the second baseman hit a single of his own. Hisanori Takahashi came in for Williams and pitched two innings in relief.

Nova struck out the side in the third, and then the Yankees needed just three hits to score their four third-inning runs. Brett Gardner walked and Jeter doubled him to third before a groundout by Curtis Granderson advanced both, scoring Gardner. Alex Rodriguez singled home Jeter, and and after Cano walked, Teixeira doubled to right. A sacrifice fly from Nick Swisher then brought Cano home from third base.

Los Angeles went 1-2-3 again in the top of the fourth, and then Jeter put three more runs on the board with a homer that also scored Russell Martin and Gardner. Jeter went 2-for-5, raising his batting average to a team-high .366.

In the fifth, a Chris Iannetta homer brought the Angels to within 8-3. One inning later, a double from Maicer Izturis scored Trumbo, who had walked one at-bat prior.

Two innings later, Rafael Soriano came in for Nova. Three batters later, Albert Pujols singled home Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick, making the score 8-5. Pujols went 1-for-5 on the night, bringing his average to .243.

In the bottom of the seventh, Cano singled and then stole second before scoring on a single by Swisher. Jason Isringhausen was brought in for David Carpenter, who pitched two innings. His first batter was Ibanez, who hammered a sinker on a 2-1 count 415 feet to the upper deck in right field, scoring Swisher and extending New York's lead to 11-5.

David Robertson came in for Soriano at the beginning of the eighth, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit. Boone Logan then pitched the ninth, striking out the side with a walk to Torii Hunter in between.

Tim Tebow is a really nice guy. He has a well-documented track record of making friends with practically everyone he meets. Unfortunately, on Sunday he had to meet thousands of New Yorkers at the same in Yankee Stadium. That's a tough crowd to impress, even for perhaps the nicest guy in football. According to the Associated Press, fans weren't shouting "te-BOWWWWW" from the bleachers.

But the day wasn't a total failure! Tebow happened to meet one Dwyane Wade, a talented sportsman in his own right, and the two apparently hit it off. We think. Tebow and Wade were caught on camera watching the Yankees take on the Angels, and just seemed kind of ... bored. If they didn't happen to portray two megastars, the following screen caps would be some of the least interesting to ever grace the Internet. I know you are going to click the jump, just know that you are going to be very disappointed.

Told you. Really boring. But hold on! Wade moved down a row to sit next to Tebow. Will we see sparks fly?

There was a time when Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy were the future of the Yankees rotation. Instead, none have panned out. The most disappointing of which has been Hughes.

Phil Hughes experiment was supposed to feature a plethora of happy moments. However, after getting rocked by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for six runs in three innings on Saturday afternoon, including a two-run home run in the second and a three-run homer in the fourth, the exalting Huuughes... chants from Yankees fans were replaced with an unmerciful chorus of boos.

It was the second loss Hughes has suffered in as many outings. Hughes was also hammered by the Rays for five hits and two runs including a blast from Carlos Pena in 4 2/3 innings.

In 2007, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman intended for Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy and Hughes to develop into aces on the next great Yankees rotation. The plan has failed miserably. Hughes is the last remaining hurler from a promising young staff and the Yankees appear set on reviving his career. However, his odds on surviving the season in pinstripes do not appear favorable at this point. Hughes is akin to Matt Damon in Saving Private Ryan.

After being coddled with restrictions and throwing limits as a young pitcher in 2007, known as the "Joba Rules", Chamberlain was touted as a future ace hurler. Instead, Chamberlain never seized his opportunities and has been stuck in a setup role in the five years since. Yankee fans may have seen the last of Chamberlain after he suffered a bizarre open ankle dislocation on a trampoline last month.

Kennedy was traded following the 2009 season and In 2010, Hughes outlasted Chamberlain in a spring training competition for the final starting spot. That season, Hughes gave a glimpse into the promise that convinced Brian Cashman to turn down a swap involving Hughes and then-Minnesota Twins Cy Young winner Johan Santana.

While Hughes hasn't fallen as far as Chamberlain has, he hasn't come within arms reach of the heights that were expected of him when he joined the Yankees in 2007. In his second major league start, Hughes threw a no-hitter through six innings before suffering a significant hamstring injury. During the 2007 postseason, 21-year old Hughes replaced Roger Clemens in the rotation.

Chamberlain and Hughes are pitching the 2012 season on one-year contracts. Well, at least Hughes is pitching this season. Just not very well.

Hughes' cruelly disappointing pitching also leaves the future of the Yankees bullpen shrouded in doubt. If Hughes does not return to form, Cashman's five-year experiment with developing young pitchers from the minor leagues instead of doling out for the best free agents aces will have yielded awful results. To make matters worse, the Yankees hitters nearly shutout by the Angels' C.J. Wilson., whom they didn't pursue this summer as part of their more fiscally responsible post-Boss Steinbrenner era.

Conversely, while 39-year old Andy Pettitte pitches his way back from retirement in the minor league system, Hughes may be throwing himself out of the rotation. Ironically, eight years ago, the Yankees selected Hughes with a first round pick they were rewarded with as free agent compensation for Petite signing with the Houston Astros.

Michael Pineda's return may also contribute to Hughes being demoted to the bullpen. Likewise, the Yankees realized years ago that the bullpen was where Chamberlain belonged.

Hughes spent much of the 2009 season as a reliever and earned a 5-1 record, three saves and a 1.40 ERA. Injuries and shoddy pitching forced the Yankees to move Hughes to the bullpen for the 2011 playoffs.

Even his breakout 2010 season was fools gold. In 14 of his wins, the Yankees gave Hughes tremendous run support by scoring six or more runs and his 4.19 ERA was the second highest of any pitcher in the top 25 wins category. Hughes has hit a wall in his development or maybe it's his ceiling.

Hughes' future may belong in the bullpen.

However, Girardi hasn't made any decisions as of yet about Hughes' future but he isn't afraid to make a change.

As Yankees we’re about winning. We’re going to go with the best five guys at that time (when everybody is healthy and set),’’ Girardi said.

Winning is something Hughes has been unfamiliar with lately. As a starter Hughes is now 30-21 with a 4.90 ERA. He's also 26. Although he arguably hasn't peaked his value is in question. The perception has shifted not the prized young pitcher whom the Yankees chose over a Cy Young winner anymore and he should familiarize himself with the urgency of now. This may be his final season in pinstripes. It's now or never for Phil Hughes.

New York Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes during the game against the Los Angeles Angels at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. Tim Farrell/The Star-Ledger via US PRESSWIRE

The pitcher once known around New York Yankees circles as 'The Phranchise' might have punched the first hole in his ticket out of the team's starting rotation on Saturday afternoon. Hughes was awful against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, surrendering eight hits and six runs in 3.1 innings pitched. He now has an ERA of 9.00 in his two starts this season.

It is no secret that the shadow of the recently un-retired Andy Pettitte looms over the Yankees starting pitchers. If everyone is healthy when Pettitte is ready to join the staff in a few weeks, someone between the trio of Hughes, Freddy Garcia or Ivan Nova is going to get bumped. Hughes has stamped himself as the leader in the clubhouse for that dishonor.

Two starts into a season is, of course, too early to write off any pitcher. Yet, off what we have seen the last season-and-a-half or so from Hughes it is fair to wonder if the 25-year-old former No. 1 pick (23rd overall) in the 2004 MLB Draft is ever going to establish himself as a reliable starting pitcher for the Yankees.

Hughes, who turns 26 in June, cruised through the minor leagues after the Yankees drafted him, and their expectation was that he would be a front-of-the-rotation starter, if not the outright ace of the staff by now. Yet, here we are in -- unbelievably -- the sixth major-league season of Hughes' career with the Yankees and it is still impossible to know what to make of him.

Entering Saturday he had a 36-24 career record with a fairly unsightly 4.46 career ERA -- which Saturday's beating won't help.

Hughes went 18-8 in 2010, pitching 176 innings in his only real full season with the Yankees. The record was good, but the truth is that Hughes really has not pitched well for the Yankees since the first half of 2010. In the second half of that season he was 7-6, with a 4.90 ERA. In 2011, Hughes was a disaster, going 5-5 with a 5.79 ERA and pitching only 74 innings. Now, this season has not started well.

Hughes does not consistently show the kind of stuff that the Yankees believed he had, or that leads you to think he can be a front-line starter. A fastball that is straight, and mediocre by big-league standards. A rolling curveball. An OK cutter. A change-up he does not seem to fully trust.

Hughes was booed off the mound by the faithful at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, who certainly seem to have figured out that he is not -- and likely isn't going to be -- what they were told he would become. The question for Hughes now is simply whether or not he can prevent getting booted to the bullpen. Or Scranton-Wilkes Barre.

Without doubt, this is not where the Yankees thought they would be with Hughes as this point.

The New York Yankees lost to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Saturday, by a final score of 7-1. Phil Hughes (0-2) got knocked around in his second start of the season. He lasted only 3.1 innings, surrendered eight hits and six earned runs.

"It's tough," Hughes said. "I came into camp, I felt good with my stuff throughout camp and things just haven't gone the way I would have liked. I just have to keep working hard and get things right.

"I feel like I can succeed in this league. It's something that I've done before and hopefully that I can do again. That sort of helps."

Rookie pitcher David Phelps – who came in for Hughes in the fourth – performed well in his first extended action of his career. Coming into Saturday's action, Phelps had only pitched three innings in his MLB career. Saturday, he pitched 5.1 innings in relief, allowing only one run and striking out four.

FanGraphs ranked Phelps as the Yankees 12th best prospect coming into this season. The 25-year-old pitched 107 innings in Triple A last season, recording six wins and 90 strikeouts.

C.J. Wilson (2-0) pitched six solid innings to get the victory for Anaheim. The Yankees are 4-4 on the season, while the Angels are 3-5.

The series concludes on Sunday at 8:05 p.m. ET. Ivan Nova (1-0) pitches for the Yankees and Jerome Williams pitches for Anaheim.
