New York Yankees legend Andy Pettitte made his spring training debut on Wednesday. The lefthander pitched the sixth inning of a game against the New York Mets, facing three minor league hitters. It was a positive step forward for Pettitte's return this season.

Pettitte allowed a leadoff single to Cory Vaughn, who was thrown out while trying to steal. He got another hitter out on an infield pop-up and a grounder. His fastball touched 86 mph on the radar gun and his curve ball was clocked in the mid-70s. More importantly, he managed to keep his pitches around the plate.

Manager Joe Girardi had this to say:

"I thought he was all right. It was good to see him get on the hill," Girardi said after the Yankees' 8-3 win.

Pettitte, 39, is attempting a comeback this season. The last time he pitched was in the 2010 postseason.

The New York Yankees have sent catcher Francisco Cervelli to the minors in a bit of a shocking move as Spring Training wraps up (via ESPN).

Cervelli has spent the past three seasons as the Yankees backup catcher. He was not having a great spring but did hit a 2-run homer in the Yankees' 8-3 win against the Mets in Wednesday's Spring Training game. The Yankees optioned Cervelli to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after acquiring catcher Chris Stewart from the Giants in exchange for right-handed pitcher George Kontos.

Cervelli said about the demotion:

"It's not my decision, and that's it," Cervelli said. "I'm disappointed with this, but that's never going to change anything. All my life, I've had to do things, and I've had to do it double, triple. If they want me to prove that I can catch in the big leagues, I'll go and prove it, that I have to be here."

Stewart has hit just .200 with 3 home runs and 13 RBI in 210 MLB at-bats (93 games).

The New York Yankees’ ho-hum Spring Training finale on Wednesday against the New York Mets now has some intrigue. The recently un-retired Andy Pettitte is scheduled to pitch one inning on Wednesday, his first game action since announcing his return.

Pettitte’s return to the Yankees after a year away from the game is one of the most intriguing stories of the 2012 MLB season. What does the 39-year-old left-hander have left in the tank, and how quickly can he get ready to rejoin the Yankees after deciding to return once Spring Training had already begun?

Pettitte has 240 career victories, 203 of those with the Yankees. In his last season, 2010, he went 11-3 with a 3.28 ERA and made the American League All-Star Team. Pettitte will turn 40 this summer.

The Yankees have a crowded rotation, but will undoubtedly make room for Pettitte once the left-hander is ready to pitch at the big-league level again.

New York opens the regular season Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays

Spring Training is almost over for the New York Yankees. An exhibition game Monday against the Miami Marlins, then a pair against the New York Mets Tuesday and Wednesday before the regular season opens Friday in Tampa against the Tampa Bay Rays.

With that in mind, let's look back at Spring Training 'Kudos & Wet Willies' style. If you're not familiar, 'Kudos' go to players who did well and deserve praise. 'Wet Willies' go to those who have not performed well and have earned our wrath. Spring stats entering Monday will be in parenthesis.

'Kudos' To ...

Curtis Granderson (.378 average, 2 homers, 7 RBI): Granderson had a career year in 2011 with 41 home runs and 119 RBI. He seems hell-bent on proving it wasn't an aberration.

Justin Maxwell (.317, 0 homers, 11 RBI): Maxwell probably won't make the team, and he is out of options. He might, however, have played well enough that the Yankees could get something via trade in return for the young outfielder.

Jose Gil (.455, 1 homer, 6 RBI): Won't unseat Francisco Cervelli, and won't get much attention in a Yankee system flush with catching prospects. Still, a spring that will put the 25-year-old on the team's radar.

Alex Rodriguez (.289, 2 homers, 11 RBI): A-Rod is coming off his worst season and there are questions about how much he has left. If he can duplicate his .509 slugging percentage this spring during the regular season that would be Rodriguez' best work since 2009.

Andy Pettitte: Simply for deciding to come back.

Clay Rapada (1-0, 0.93 ERA): The journeyman lefty specialist earned a roster spot with a terrific spring.

Dellin Betances (0-0, 0.00 ERA): In five appearances covering eight innings Betances did not give up a run. Could the highly-regarded 24-year-old pitch himself into a spot in the Yankee bullpen before the season is over? Maybe.

Phil Hughes (0-1, 2.03 ERA): Hughes had a 5.79 ERA a season ago, but threw the ball much better this spring. His velocity, missing much of last season, was better. The Yankees need Hughes to pitch more like he did in 2010, when he won 18 games.

'Wet Willies' To ...

Raul Ibanez (.167, 3 homers, 10 RBI): Ibanez has hit better the past few days, but his body of work has led to questions about whether the 39-year-old outfielder/designated hitter has much left to give.

Jorge Vasquez (.091, 0 homers, 2 RBI): A year after hitting .412 in Spring Training, the young first baseman flamed out this spring. If Ibanez flops as the lefty hitting DH the Yankees will be looking for an alternative. Vasquez had a chance this spring to stamp himself as a possibility and didn't get the job done.

Michael Pineda (1-0. 5.68 ERA): Acquired in a huge trade for Jesus Montero, Pineda pitched poorly this spring and will start the season on the disabled list with shoulder tendonitis.

Ivan Nova (1-2, 6.86 ERA): If Nova had not gone 16-4 a season a spring like this could have gotten him bumped down to AAA. As it is, he is solidly in the starting rotation and the spring will be forgotten if he pitches well once the season begins.

Just a few days remain before the New York Yankees will finally play a regular season game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday afternoon.

Spring Training has proved to be a relatively painless experience thus far for the Bronx Bombers. New York is currently 16-11 and the right in the thick of it in the Grapefruit League.

The best news is how healthy the team appears heading into April. Michael Pineda of course is the lone exception with some shoulder trouble, but other than that the squad looks ready to go.

Soon enough, the records will be wiped clean after Wednesday's game with the New York Mets.

Monday, April 2: New York at Miami 7:10 p.m. ET

The Yanks will finish off their Florida schedule having a date with Ozzie Guillen and the Marlins.

Tuesday, April 3: New York Yankees at New York Mets 2:10 p.m. ET

The last road game of the Spring is about as close to home as it gets.

Wednesday, April 4: New York Mets at New York Yankees 12:05 p.m. ET

Both teams finish up their Spring schedule as they prepare for the regular season.

Earlier it was discovered that Yankees pitcher, Cesar Cabral, suffered a "significant" elbow injury. Mark Feinsand is now reporting via Twitter that Cabral's injury is a stress fracture at the tip of his elbow.

Feinsand went on to tweet that Cabral has been put in a splint, without a timetable or treatment plan in place. Because of Cabral's injury, it's likely that Clay Rapada will make the big league club.

Cabral was acquired from the Red Sox via the Rule 5 draft. The 23 year old had some really good years in the Red Sox system, sustaining K rates near 10/9. He pitched 38.1 innings in double A last season, saving one game and winning two, with a K/9 of 10.80.

Michael Pineda is not the only pitcher the New York Yankees have lost to injury in the past couple of days. Cesar Cabral, a 22-year-old left-hander who had a shot at earning a spot in the bullpen, has a “significant” elbow injury.

Cabral apparently suffered the injury during an appearance on Friday night. The Yankees do not know at this point whether Cabral will require surgery, but they did say he will be sidelined longer than 15 days.

That means journeyman left-hander Clay Rapada, who has not given up a run in 10 spring appearances covering 9.1 innings, is likely to make the team.

The Yankees are looking for a second left-hander to join Boone Logan in their bullpen. They signed Pedro Feliciano prior to the 2011 season, but Feliciano showed up at 2011 Spring Training with a shoulder injury and has never pitched for the Yankees.

Pineda has been diagnosed with tendinitis and is expected to be OK.

The New York Yankees have placed Michael Pineda on the 15-day DL with right shoulder tendinitis, according to multiple reports. The right-hander had an MRI on Saturday morning after being lit up for six runs in two and two-thirds innings on Friday night.

With Pineda now out, Freddy Garcia has seized the final spot in the Yankees rotation and is expected to start the team's fifth game.

Pineda's pitch velocity had been a point of concern all spring training, but he had been adamant about his health before complaining of shoulder soreness after Friday's performance. The 23-year-old, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners for Jesus Montero, normally reaches 95 to 97 MPH on the radar gun but had reportedly rarely topped 91 MPH during spring training.
