The Jets appear to be imploding following an 8-8 season in which they failed to make the playoffs

It is apparently an ugly day in Florham Park as the New York Jets deal with the aftermath of losing to the Miami Dolphins Sunday and falling short of the playoffs, as well as with Santonio Holmes' bad behavior and benching near the end of Sunday's season-ending loss.

Cannizaro wrote:

"Ryan giving Holmes the title of captain was like a father handing the keys and a bottle of booze to his 16-year-old son and telling him to "party on'' with the new sports car."

Then there was Bart Scott flipping off reporters on his way out of the locker room today, as well as Holmes being ushered out without being allowed to speak to the media.

The Jets may not be the 'Big Brother' of their playoff-bound city rivals, the New York Giants. What they definitely are, though, is the best circus in town.

Santonio Holmes is the big story following the New York Jets 19-17 loss to the Dolphins in Week 17 of the 2011 NFL season, the final game of the year for New York, which failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Holmes was benched in the fourth quarter after an altercation in the huddle, and some of the wide receiver's teammates spoke out about it after the game. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson was among the most vocal, ripping the captain.

"It’s tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner," Tomlinson said. "You're a captain, guys looking at you. You've got to lead by example. You've got to play your tail off until the last play. And when that doesn’t happen, you will have guys look at you in the way that captains shouldn’t be looked at. You should always put yourself out there as a leader."

Here is full portion of quotes on Holmes from Tomlinson's postgame media availability (via Jets.com):

On the verbal scuffle in the huddle

Let me just say there were some guys in the huddle that were unhappy with Tone [Jets WR Santonio Holmes]'s demeanor. When you have a group of guys that’s fighting their butts off, and one guy, for whatever reason, their demeanor’s not with them, you’re going to get some guys to say something to him and tell them how they feel. That’s what you got today.

On what was said

Yeah, things like "Come on man, let’s go." Just that type of thing.

On why Holmes was upset

You know what, that’s something you’re going to have to talk to Tone about. He didn’t say anything. I think, once again, it’s demeanor. Body language tells players everything. I think that’s what it was.

On how he would describe the demeanor and body language

Not really into the game. Just feeling like it’s over. Feeling sorry for themselves. That type of thing.

On if it was the bad passing game that got to him

I have no idea, honestly. I have no idea. But even if it was, we were still in the game. We were still in the game.

On advice he wants to give Holmes

My advice to him, I’m going to talk to him. We’re going to keep it between us, the advice I’m going to give him. I don’t want to put it out in the media, the stuff I will tell Tone. But we will have a conversation.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez also spoke about Holmes after the game, but said he didn't want to get into details publicly.

On if he’ll talk to Holmes

Of course we’ll talk and I’ll talk to a bunch of guys about the season. What their thoughts are and how they view how the season went and what their personal opinions are of things and the way they went, winning and losing and how close we were. It’s not just Santonio, we all want to talk about it and discuss those things.

On if Holmes was yelling at him

Like I said, there’s a real emotional side of this game and when it happens in the huddle, it’s really for those guys in the huddle and I’m not going to expound upon that.

On if he was surprised Holmes was taken out

I don’t know what happened there. We were in the middle of a two minute drill and we’ve got to keep playing. A couple of plays he was in and a couple of plays PT [Patrick Turner] came in and ended up catching a touchdown so I don’t know what happened.

After watching his team lose to the Miami Dolphins 19-17 on Sunday and fall short of the playoffs for the first time in his three-year tenure as head coach, there was no braggadoccio in Rex Ryan during his post-game press conference.

"I'll shoulder the blame," a somber Ryan said. "8-8 clearly is not what we were trying to get to. We have to look at every aspect of our team, ask ourselves how can we get better, and we'll do that.

We are still waiting for the post-game transcripts from Rex Ryan and other members of the New York Jets to get their take on what happened with wide receiver Santonio Holmes at the end of the team’s season-ending 19-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

An ESPN report, however, indicates that teammates feel Holmes, who did not catch a pass during the game, “quit” on his them.

From the report:

“There were guys in the huddle not happy with Santonio’s demeanor throughout the game and in the two-minute drill,” said Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson. “And they said something to him about it.”

That caused the argument, and the coaches decided to bench Holmes.

One team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Jets offensive tackle Wayne Hunter got into a shouting match with Holmes after the wide receiver said something the players resented in the huddle. The source also said Holmes “quit.”

If this is true it is a terrible indictment of a player with a Super Bowl ring who was named a captain this season by coach Rex Ryan.

Santonio Holmes’ behavior near the end of the New York Jets’ season-ending 19-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins will require some explanation.

The sometimes outspoken Holmes, one of the Jets captains, was on the bench for most of the Jets final drive, a touchdown-scoring one that pulled New York within two points with 1:15 to play.

Holmes appeared to have a shouting match with a teammate in the huddle prior to a play, during which he was pushed away by tight end Dustin Keller.

The veteran receiver did not catch a pass in the game, breaking a string on 84 straight games in which Holmes had at least one catch.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez had a difficult day for the Jets. The third-year pro was intercepted three times and threw several other passes well off target.

It was impossible to tell if Sanchez was the subject of Holmes’ disgust, but that seems like a reasonable assumption. It will be interesting to see what coach Rex Ryan has to say about the situation in his post-game press conference.

The New York Jets will not participate in the 2012 NFL playoffs. The Jets lost to the Miami Dolphins, 19-17, on Sunday meaning there is no scenario in which the Jets (8-8) can make the playoffs.

Entering the day the Jets needed a victory, plus losses by Tennessee, Cincinnati and either Denver or Oakland to reach the playoffs.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez threw three interceptions on the day, completing 21-of-32 for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

Sanchez’ final interception came with the Jets trailing 16-10 and having moved to the Miami 10-yard line with 3:16 to play. Sanchez’ pass for Shonn Greene was intercepted by Miami linebacker Marvin Mitchell. The Dolphins turned the interception into a 44-yard field goal by Dan Carpenter, making the score 19-10 with 2:37 to play.

The Jets quickly mounted a touchdown drive, getting a 10-yard pass from Sanchez to Patrick Turner to move within 19-17 with 1:15 to play. Miami recovered the ensuing onside kick, however, sealing the Jets’ fate.

Even with a victory, however, the Jets would not have qualified for the playoffs. Tennesse defeat Houston, 23-22/
