The New York Giants are not done with the 2012 playoffs yet — in fact, they haven’t even begun. The Giants, though, already know which teams they will play in the 2012 NFL regular season.

The slate of opponents was announced today, and it looks somewhat like the 2011 schedule. The Giants will again face the Greeb Bay Packers at home and travel to face the San Francisco 49ers. They will play the NFC South and AFC North.

There will, of course, be six NFC East games. The remaining list of opponents looks like this:

- vs. Green Bay

- @ San Francisco

- vs. New Orleans

- vs. Tampa Bay

- vs. Cleveland

- vs. Pittsburgh

- @ Atlanta

- @ Carolina

- @ Baltimore

- @ Cincinnati

The dates and times will be determined at a later date.

The Giants, though, have business to take care of before worrying about all of that.

Let's face it, Rex Ryan and his twin brother, Rob, are easy to poke fun at. They set themselves up for ridicule with their bombastic predictions and larger-than-life personalities. They're overweight, so their critics can take the low road in that department if so desired. The words "class" and "dignity" rarely find themselves in the same sentence with the Ryan brothers. And when they are wrong (which is often nowadays), they rarely back down from their previous pronouncements. They've become cartoon characters, with eye rolls now automatically employed with every utterance by the pair.

Leading up to the Dallas Cowboys-New York Giants game, Rob made this very Ryan-like statement on bringing his family to New York with him: "I want them to be there when we win the East." Well, we know how that turned out. In the two most important games of the season for both teams, his Cowboys gave up a total of 69 points to the Giants. Not the stuff of bragging and boasting. Rex has made one Super Bowl prediction after another in his three seasons as head coach of the New York Jets, and we also know how that has worked out. Neither will ever make a living as a soothsayer or fortune teller. But neither will ever stop trying, it seems.

The chorus that has been sung during Rex's tenure with the Jets has gone something like this: "He's a player's coach, whose team would run through a wall for him." He's been the winner of polls on which players want to play for which coach in the NFL. He builds his players up, infusing them with the same swagger that runs through his veins. Who wouldn't want to play for him? But now his team is out of control. The defense is pointing fingers at the offense. Some offensive players are blaming Mark Sanchez. There has been in-fighting all year long. Everyone in the tri-state area blames Brian Schottenheimer. And now the Santonio Holmes benching is the last snapshot we have of the 2011 Jets. Naming Holmes captain was a shaky proposition in the first place, and foisting leadership skills on someone who doesn't possess them completely backfired. And was Rex in control, front and center when his pet project blew up in his face? Here's his answer: "I looked out there and was wondering why he wasn't out there myself. I did not bench Santonio. Maybe you'll have to ask him."

Having villains in sports is always good. Of course I mean a fun sports villain, not a real Jerry Sandusky-like villain. Besides a hero to root for, we need that loathed counterpart to make the winning all that much sweeter. So both Ryans are filling a need. Defeating the Jets and Cowboys is twice as much fun (or three times when it comes to Dallas if you take Jerry Jones into account). And for Jet fans and Cowboy lovers, when their team wins, there's nothing wrong with being the bad guy who comes to town and stomps on their opponents' dreams, like the Jets did to the Patriots last year and Peyton Manning and the Colts. If a player or coach or general manager in professional sports doesn't have full confidence in himself, he'll get eaten alive. So believing in oneself is a must in their business. But it's always better to have a quiet confidence. And one doesn't have to look far to see exhibits A and B in Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning. Not everyone can be Joe Namath or Muhammad Ali, and if one's guarantees go bad, the harder the fall will be. And on Sunday, the Ryan twins fell with a pronounced thump.

When Rex Ryan signed on with the Jets, he brought the circus to town with him. At first, it was a fun, entertaining circus, but now that circus is a little bit scary, with the clowns frightening onlookers and the ring leader losing control of his charges. Rex and Rob were both humbled big time on Sunday (not to mention the previous Sunday as well). But do they even realize it? Probably not. Here's Rex after the devastating end to his season: "I believe we will win the Super Bowl. I will believe it for the next 15 years. So you can get all the articles out there. That's fine and dandy. For me, I'll find a way to make this team better. I will." And the beat goes on.

New York Giants' running back Brandon Jacobs could not help himself after the Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 31-14, Sunday night to clinch the NFC East, in the process reaching the playoffs for the first time in three years. What Jacobs could not help doing was thinking about the Super Bowl-winning 2007 Giants' team.

"I would not want to face the New York Giants in the playoffs right now. I got the same feeling [that I had in 2007]. There's a lot of guys that are here that weren't here a couple of years ago when we went [to the Super Bowl in 2007], but it's the same kind of feeling that I have. It's basically the same road as well," Jacobs said.

The similarities to that team, which defeated the previously unbeaten New England Patriots in Super Bowl 42, are somewhat eerie.

That Giants team was hardly a dominant one in the regular season. The Giants went 10-6 that season and earned a wild-card berth. They needed a come-from-behind Week 16 victory over the Buffalo Bills to qualify for the playoffs, then lost to New England in a spirited regular-season finale, using those games as a springboard to the playoffs.

Two weeks ago this Giants team was on the ropes. After a disheartening loss to the Washington Redskins the Giants needed victories over the New York Jets and the Cowboys to qualify for the post-season. The Giants came up with quite possibly their two most complete games of the season and got both victories.

There was even a play that resembled the famous Eli Manning to David Tyree helmet catch that set up the Super Bowl victory. In the fourth quarter, with Dallas having sliced a 21-0 deficit to 21-14 Manning dropped back to pass and faced a heavy rush. He spun away from it and, as he had with Tyree, simply flung the ball deep downfield toward Victor Cruz. The salsa-dancing second-year wide receiver leaped, made a terrific 44-yard catch that set up a Giants' field goal, and New York went on to earn the victory.

Do the Giants have a deep playoff run in them? Maybe. They get to begin with a home game against the 10-6 Atlanta Falcons Sunday at MetLife Stadium (1 p.m. ET/FOX). They have Manning playing as well as he ever has. They have Cruz and Hakeem Nicks making plays. The defense is playing better. New York sacked Dallas quarterback Tony Romo six times Sunday night and, for the second straight week, the coverage issues that had plagued them most of the season, disappeared.

Still, none of Jacobs' teammates wanted to climb quite as far out on the ledge as Jacobs did in his post-game remarks.

"I think that any team that's in the playoffs wants to play us because they're in the playoffs. Why wouldn't they want to play us? They get the opportunity to beat us just like we get the opportunity to beat them," said defensive end Justin Tuck. "With that said, I think us playing like we played tonight and we played the last two weeks, it's going to be a tough road to beat us."

Manning also wanted no part of comparing the two teams.

"I think we're just going to try not to compare right now," Manning said. "We have a lot of guys on this team who weren't here in '07 and don't know so this is a whole new year and a whole new situation and we have to enjoy this, enjoy this victory tonight, but come tomorrow, we'll look at some things and start to make some corrections, but we'll get ready for Atlanta and start preparing for them and see if we can make a run through the playoffs."

Still, it's hard not to think that the possibility of something magical exists. After all, the Giants are still playing.

The New York Giants are NFC East champions after Sunday’s 31-14 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, meaning they are headed to the playoffs for the first time in three years. Here is a quick look back at the game.

It Was Over When …

Eli Manning hit Hakeem Nicks with a four-yard touchdown pass to give the Giants a commanding 31-14 lead with 3:46 to play.

Turning Point Of The Game

With Dallas having crept within 21-14 after trailing 21-0 at halftime the Giants were struggling to find some offense. On a second down play from their own 25-yard line, the Giants pulled off a play reminiscent of Manning to David Tyree in Super Bowl 42. Under a heavy rush, Manning spun out, found Victor Cruz deep downfield and simply flung the ball in his direction. Cruz came down with it for a 44-yard gain that set up a Lawrence Tynes’ field goal and helped the Giants re-establish control of the game.

Three Stars

- Eli Manning: The Giants quarterback was 24-of-33 for 346 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran his way out of trouble on a couple of occasions, and played another tremendous, mistake-free game.

- Victor Cruz: Six catches for 178 yards, including the aforementioned 44-yarder and a 74-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown. The amazing second-year player from UMass just keeps making huge plays.

- The Giants Defense: Impossible to single out one player here. Huge plays all night by Michael Boley and Jason Pierre-Paul; two sacks for Osi Umenyiora in his return to action; an interception by Antrel Rolle; a sack and a forced fumble by Justin Tuck; a well-called game by defensive coordinator Perry Fewell.

What’s Next?

The Giants host the Atlanta Falcons (10-6) at MetLife Stadium Sunday (1 p.m. ET/FOX) in a first-round NFC Playoff game.

The New York Giants claimed the final playoff spot Sunday night, turning back a second-half rally by the Dallas Cowboys to earn the NFC East title with a 31-14 victory.

The Giants (9-7) will host the Atlanta Falcons (10-6) Sunday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. on FOX. The Cowboys finish the season 8-8.

The Giants jumped to a 21-0 lead in the first half. Victor Cruz had a 74-yard catch-and-run for New York's first score, and Ahmad Bradshaw scored second-quarter touchdowns on a five-yard pass from Eli Manning and a 10-yard run.

Dallas closed within 21-14 on a six-yard touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Laurent Robinson wih 10:20 left in the game, but the Cowboys got no closer.

A 44-yard pass to Cruz on the Giants' next possession set up a 28-yard Lawrence Tynes field goal to give the Giants a 24-14 lead. The Giants clinched the game with 3:46 remaining on a four-yard pass from Manning to Hakeem Nicks.

Manning finished the game 24-of-33 for 346 yards and three touchdowns. The pass to Nicks was his 15th fourth-quarter touchdown pass of the season, an NFL record. Cruz caught six passes for 178 yards and a touchdown, and Nicks caught six balls for 76 yards.

Romo completed 28-of-39 passes for 289 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Dallas. The Giants sacked Romo six times.

The Dallas Cowboys tallied a touchdown, but the New York Giants collected a huge interception that has helped the Giants take a two-score lead against the Cowboys, who trail, 21-7, entering the fourth quarter of a NFC East title game at MetLife Stadium in east Rutherford, NJ. The winner earns the division crown and a postseason date with the Atlanta Falcons next Sunday (1 p.m. on FOX).

Dallas used a six-play, 94-yard drive that was capped off by a 34-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Laurent Robinson from quarterback Tony Romo that trimmed the Giants 21-point halftime lead to just 14.

The Cowboys used the momentum from the touchdown to force a three-and-out by the Giants, who somewhat slowed down the Dallas surge when safety Antrel Rolle picked of Romo on the fifth play of the follwing drive.

However, the Giants swing was short lived as the Cowboys forced a turnovers on downs and now as the ball at the Giants 24-yard line facing a 2nd-and-15 as the fourth quarter begins.

Two touchdowns -- one rushing, one receiving -- from running back Ahmad Bradshaw has helped the New York Giants earn a 21-0 halftime lead over the Dallas Cowboys in a NFC East title game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
