The New York Islanders played host to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night in an Atlantic Division showdown from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. The Islanders went up 3-1 in the first period, only to cough up the lead and go on to lose 4-3 in overtime.

Philadelphia drew first blood, when Andrej Meszaros (assisted by Maxime Talbot and Matt Carle) slapped one in just 18 seconds into the game. New York quickly answered with a goal of its own just 19 seconds later when Kyle Okposo (assisted by Michael Grabner) snapped in a 20-footer.

Grabner had another assist along with Josh Bailey when Okposo tipped in his second of the night, then got on the board with one of his own (assisted by Okposo and Frans Nielsen) to close out the opening frame with a 3-1 lead.

It wouldn't be enough.

The Flyers pulled within one in the second stanza thanks to Scott Hartnell's power play goal (assisted by Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux), then made it three-all when Daniel Briere (assisted by Braydon Coburn) wristed one in at the 14:18 mark of the third period.

That sent it into overtime where Briere (assisted by Hartnell and Coburn) needed just two and a half minutes to score again and win it for the Orange & Black.

Philadelphia improves to 12-6-3 with the victory while New York falls to 5-10-4 in defeat.

After two straight shutouts, the Islanders are looking for a goal (and a win) against the Atlantic Division rival Flyers.

The Islanders are sinking, again. New York, a loser in 12 of its last 14 games, invites Philadelphia to the Nassau Coliseum on Wednesday night with a chance to get a big win against the Atlantic Division rival, which has lost two straight games itself. The Flyers have not lost three straight games so far this season.

The Flyers have been a below average defensive team, giving up 3.1 goals per game (20th in the NHL), and starting defensemen Chris Pronger and Braydon Coburn were out of the lineup on Monday in a 4-2 loss to Carolina. But the Islanders have had trouble putting the puck in the net, scoring less than two goals per game. Is this the matchup New York needs or just another stumbling block? The Islanders have been shut out in their last two games.

A season ago, the Flyers owned the Islanders, winning the season series 3-0. This is the first meeting between the teams this season.
