The New York Jets need plenty of help if they are going to reach the AFC playoffs for the third consecutive season. Saturday’s loss to the New York Giants has put Rex Ryan’s team in a win-and-hope situation.

The Jets must beat the resurgent Miami Dolphins (5-10) in Miami. The Dolphins, once 0-7, have gone 5-3 over their last eight games.

Then the Jets have to hope that the Cincinnati Bengals (9-6) lose to the Baltimore Ravens, that the 8-7 Tennessee Titans lose or tie and that either the Denver Broncos or Oakland Raiders lose on Sunday.

So, the loss to the Giants proved not only embarrassing to Ryan’s ego, but it seemingly devastated the Jets’ playoff hopes.

NY Jets clinch a wild card spot if:

1) NYJ win + CIN loss + TEN loss or tie + OAK loss or tie

2) NYJ win + CIN loss + TEN loss or tie + DEN loss or tie

Sunday's 29-14 loss to the New York Giants made it a bit tougher for the New York Jets to make the AFC playoffs. However, there's still a good chance that Gang Green can sneak in, but they will need some help.

The only way the Jets can get into the playoff is if they defeat the Miami Dolphins in Week 17 and both the Cincinnati Bengals, who play the visiting Baltimore Ravens, and Oakland Raiders, who hosts the San Diego Chargers, each lose.

If the Jets win and the Bengals lose, but the Raiders win, Oakland will earn the No. 6 playoff spot because it owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over New York. If the Jets win and the Raiders lose, but Bengals win, Cincinnati is in the playoffs.

If all three teams lose next Sunday, then again Cincinnati earns the AFC's last playoff spot.

Sunday's 29-14 victory over the New York Jets makes the NFC playoff scenario for the New York Giants very simple: beat the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 and you're in. Lose and starting making tee times for Monday -- of course, those tee times probably would need to be made in a warmer climate.

As for the rest of the NFC, on Sunday the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles were all eliminated from playoff contention. The Detroit Lions clinched their first playoff berth since 1999 with a dominating 38-10 victory over the San Diego Chargers. Meanwhile, two teams hanging onto their playoff lives are: the Atlanta Falcons play Monday night against the New Orleans Saints, and the Chicago Bears, who play at the Green Bay Packers Sunday night.

The Giants must win the NFC East.

At 7-7, the Giants no longer have an opportunity to earn a wild-card berth. The Atlanta Falcons and the Lions are both 9-5 and even if they both lose their last two games and the Giants win their last two the Giants would fall short based on tie-breakers.

If the Giants lose to the New York Jets on Saturday and the NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys defeat the Philadelphia Eagles the Giants would be eliminated from playoff contention.

If the Giants win both of their remaining games, defeating the Jets and then the Cowboys on the Jan. 1 the Giants would win the NFC East.

The New York Giants victory over. the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football gave New York a huge advantage in the race to the postseason in the NFC East. The win pulled the Giants even with the Cowboys at 7-6, but effectively gave New York a one-game cushion over Dallas because the G-Men now own the head-to-head tiebreaker with their division rival.

If the playoffs started next week, New York would be slotted into the fourth seed with a wild-card round game against the Falcons. The Gaints best bet for the postseason is to hold onto the NFC East lead as both the Falcons and Lions would currently hold a one-game advantage over New York in the wild card with three games left to play.
