Junior forward James Southerland scored 14 of his team- and collegiate-best 19 points in the first half Tuesday to help the Syracuse University men's basketball program rout the University at Albany, 98-74, in the East Regional final of the NIT Tipoff Tournament held at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The Orange (3-0), ranked No. 5 in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls, will face Virginia Tech, who defeated Florida International University, 78-63, Tuesday, in the semifinal round, which will be played at Madison Square Garden, Nov. 23.

Behind 17 bench points from sophomore guard Dion Waiters, the Syracuse University men's basketball program Monday earned its second victory of the season, 92-56, over Manhattan University, and help the Orange, ranked No. 5 in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls, advance to play the University at Albany Tuesday (7 p.m. on ESPN3) in the East Regional final of the NIT Tipoff Tournament.

For those SU fans that don't know much about the Great Danes, here's a brief scouting report:

Head Coach

Will Brown is in the midst of his 11th season as head coach of the Great Danes. Currently, Brown is the longest tenured coach in the America East Conference and has led Albany to a pair of conference titles.

Last Season

Albany finished the season 16-16 overall and 9-7 in the America East Conference. The Great Danes lost to Stony Brook in the quarterfinals of the America East Tournament. In the last six season, Albany has compiled at least 15 wins.

This Season

The Great Danes, picked to finish fourth in the America East Conference preseason media poll, return seven letterwinners, four starters, from last year's squad. On Friday, Albany was clobbered by No. 10-ranked the University of Pittsburgh, 89-46, but rebounded Monday with a decisive 77-68 victory over Brown University.

Player To Watch Out For

Co-captain junior guard Logan Aronhalt (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) is the leader of this Albany squad. Last season, Aronhalt earned All-America East Conference Third Team honors after averaging 14.6 points per game. On Monday, Aronhalt netted 19 points, collected 15 rebounds and made 3-for-4 shot form behind the 3-point arc.

Overall

Albany, which enters Tuesday's match up as a 24 1/2 point underdog, is probably the best team SU has seen so far, but that's not saying much. Not only will the Orange need to keep Aronhalt in check, but also watch out for junior guard Mike Black, who also earned All-America East Third Team honors last year, and guard Gerardo Suero, a junior college transfer, who netted a game-best 29 points against Brown.

If you're a betting man, I'd take the Great Danes with the points, but don't expect this game to be competitive.

The Syracuse University men's basketball program came away Monday night with an easy 92-56 victory over Manhattan University in the first round of the NIT Tipoff Tournament. Sophomore guard Dion Waiter came off the bench to net a game-best 17 points to help the Orange, No. 5 in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls, earn their second victory of the year.

However, the biggest news of the night wasn't SU's lopsided victory, but head coach Jim Boeheim's post-game announcement that freshman guard Trevor Cooney will be redshirted -- a process in which the player's eligibility is delayed one or, at most, two seasons. The player is allowed to attend classes, practice with the team and dress for a game, but he/she can't play. Now, if an injury were to occur to another SU player, Cooney's redshirt status could be removed.

Currently, Syracuse is using a 10-man rotation that already features at least five 3-point shooting threats. Cooney, who was rated as one of the best, if not the best, 3-point shooting recruits in the Class of 2011, will not be needed with all of the Orange's offensive threats.

On Saturday, after Syracuse drubbed Fordham University, 78-53, Boeheim was asked if he was close to deciding on Cooney's redshirt status. Boeheim response was, "We're close. We're close." Now, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Boeheim's plans with the 6-foot-4 freshman, who played in both preseason games, but didn't take off his warm ups in SU's first two contests -- if Cooney did, he would have forfeited the right to redshirt.

For SU and Cooney, this is the right choice. One year to study, one year to develop and one extra year to snipe in an Orange uniform.

The Syracuse University men's basketball program host Manhattan University Monday night at the Carrier Dome (7 p.m. on ESPNU). The Orange (1-0), ranked No. 5 in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls, will be playing in the opening round of the annual NIT Tipoff Tournament, which holds its semifinal and final rounds at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Now, most SU fans are already familiar with their team, but may not know anything about the Jaspers (1-0). So, here's a brief scouting report on Manhattan.

Head Coach

Steve Masiello, a former assistant coach at the University of Louisville, is in the midst of his first Division I head coaching stint. Masiello, a Kentucky University alum, spent the last six seasons learning from one of the best headmen in college basketball, Rick Pitino.

Last Season

The Jaspers had a disappointing campaign in 2010-11 compiling a 6-25 overall record and finishing second-worst (3-15) in the 10-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings.

This Season

Manhattan's 2011-12 season doesn't begin with highest expectations as the Jaspers, who return four starters for last year's squad, were predicted to finish in seventh place in the MAAC preseason media poll. On Saturday, the Manhattan began its season with a 62-48 victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Best Player To Look Out For

Junior guard George Beamon is the star of the Jaspers' program. Last season, Beamon (6-foot-4, 170-pounds) led Manhattan in scoring (16.3 points per game) and averaged 6.1 rebounds per game. Beamon's credentials helped him earn a spot on the Preseason All-MAAC's Second Team.

Overall

Manhattan really doesn't have the size -- its largest front-court player, junior Kevin Laue (6-11, 23), barley played in the season opener -- or outside-shooting ability to stick with the Orange's 2-3 zone. Look for SU, which are 26-point favorites, to roll in this one.
