After beginning the season 3-1 the Islanders are now 3-4-1 and have played four consecutive games without recording a win – their last win coming against the Rangers on October 15. Earlier this week they were shut out by the Penguins on their home ice, before traveling to Pittsburgh losing 3-2 in a shootout last night.

Goalie Evgeni Nabokov played well, finishing with 30 saves, but was pulled from the game during the shootout. Coach Jack Capuano said of Evgeni, "[he] obviously wasn't feeling well and needed to come out."

Islanders left wing Matt Martin finished with one goal, while Penguins left wing Chris Kunitz finished with a goal and an assist.

The Islanders now sit dead-last in their division at 3-4-1 with seven points. Their next game is at home against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday – the beginning of a three-game home-stand.

Pittsburgh beat the Islanders in their first meeting on Tuesday. On Thursday the Islanders get a second chance.

The New York Islanders get the Penguins on their schedule for the second time in three days on Thursday, completing their home-and-home with the Atlantic Division leaders in Pittsburgh. Game time is 7 p.m. ET (MSG +).

The Penguins (7-2-2) shutout New York on Tuesday, extending the Islanders losing streak to three games. New York (3-4-0) out-shot Pittsburgh, but Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury starred as Pittsburgh won, 3-0

Not all was bad, though. Newsday's Alan Hahn tweeted, "First indication that Isles are respected again: opponents no longer tossing their backup goalie against them. Fleury has been sensational."

The Islanders must contend with the return of Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin, who returned to the ice Tuesday after missing about two weeks with a knee injury. Malkin didn't score against the the Islanders, but he did log significant minutes. The more he gets comfortable on the ice, the more he could be a problem for New York.
