Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Jacoby Ellsbury's third homer of the day on Sunday rescued the Red Sox and kept them in the wild card lead.

Ellsbury's three-run blast off Scott Proctor in the 14th inning boosted Boston to a 7-4 win over the AL East-champion New York Yankees in the night portion of a doubleheader.

Ellsbury hit a pair of homers in a 6-2 loss in the afternoon contest, but his 31st of the year was huge considering Boston is now one game ahead of Tampa Bay for first place in the wild card standings. The Rays won at home over Toronto Sunday afternoon.

The Red Sox, who are 6-18 in September, were in first place in the AL East coming into the month. They have won just four of their last 18 games. Just prior to the brutal stretch, going into September 7, they owned an eight-game lead on the Rays in the wild card standings.

"A lot of people are writing us off, so we're going to come out and play our butts off," Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia said.

It comes down to the final series, and possibly a fourth game should the Rays finish in a tie with the Red Sox. The Angels are still alive too, barely, three games behind the Red Sox.

Boston heads to Baltimore to conclude the season, while the Rays host the Yankees and the Angels welcome AL West-champion Texas.

Boston's bullpen allowed just one hit over the final eight innings, helped by Jonathan Papelbon's four strikeouts over 2 1/3 frames. That included striking out Austin Romine with the bases full to end the ninth.

Pedroia made a head-first dive what was ruled an infield single in the 13th, but replays showed he was out with Nick Swisher making a nice scoop on a low throw from third baseman Ramiro Pena.

"I don't think Swish was showing him up," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who was then ejected for arguing the call made by first base umpire Tim McClelland. "That's always the big thing, the relationship with the umpires and players. You could have your say, but don't show us up. I thought he went at Swish and I didn't think that was right. Pedroia was clearly out."

Franklin Morales (1-1) fanned Brett Gardner to leave a runner at third in the 13th.

Pinch-hitter Darnell McDonald grounded a one-out single into left field in the 14th against Proctor (0-2). Marco Scutaro walked and runners were at the corners after Jarrod Saltalamacchia flied out to center. Ellsbury then smacked a 1-0 pitch into the bullpen beyond the wall in right-center.

Felix Doubront had a 1-2-3 14th to secure his first save of the year.

The Red Sox, who snapped a four-game slide, fell behind 3-0 in the first inning with John Lackey facing big trouble early. He walked Curtis Granderson with one out and Robinson Cano singled. Mark Teixeira then hit a two-run double high off the wall in center field. After receiving the throw at the plate, Jason Varitek tried to get Teixeira going to third, but deposited the ball in left field, giving New York a three-run cushion.

Ivan Nova, who remained unbeaten in his last 16 starts (12-0), gave up a triple and an RBI single to J.D. Drew in the fifth. Drew, hadn't played since July 19 due to a left shoulder impingement,

Adrian Gonzalez grounded out to plate Carl Crawford in the sixth to tie the game. Dustin Pedroia then tried to score from third on a wild pitch, but the ball took a great bounce right back to Romine. He tagged out Pedroia, who leaped over the catcher and the plate.

Scutaro and Varitek had run-scoring hits in the seventh inning, but the Yankees tied it in the bottom half after chasing starter John Lackey. Chris Dickerson's sac fly plated Gardner.

Game Notes

The Yankees finished the season 6-12 vs. Boston...New York recorded just two hits over their final 45 batters of the game, following Romine's second-inning single and finished 5-hour, 11-minute game with All-Stars Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Andruw Jones and Russell Martin on the bench.

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) – Jon Lester sat with his head down in the Red Sox dugout, an 8-0 Yankees lead sitting like a cruel joke on the scoreboard.

On a day when Boston needed its ace left-hander to play stopper, he couldn’t even make it out of the third inning.

Derek Jeter belted a three-run homer to cap a six-run second, and New York scored eight times against Lester in just 2 2/3 innings Saturday afternoon, delivering the wild card-leading Red Sox yet another blow with a 9-1 victory.

The Red Sox had their lead trimmed to just two games over the Tampa Bay Rays, who are hosting Toronto on Saturday night with a chance to pull within 1 1/2 games of Boston’s wild-card lead.

Lester (15-9) wasn’t able to press pause on Boston’s epic September slide, losing his third straight start after giving up eight hits and a walk in his shortest outing of the season.

The Red Sox lost for the sixth time in seven games and fell to 5-17 in September.

They will finish their rain-delayed series with a doubleheader Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

Boston’s three-week fall has been so precipitous that Boston, which lead the AL East by 1 1/2 games entering the month, is now one game under .500 (33-34) since the All-Star break.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have already captured the division and are playing for home-field advantage throughout the AL playoffs.

Their promising 21-year-old rookie, Jesus Montero, had a solo homer among his three hits and knocked in four runs while Freddy Garcia (12-8) threw six scoreless innings for his first win in four starts.

Boston’s only run came on Carl Crawford’s RBI double off Raul Valdes in the seventh inning, which scored Conor Jackson after he singled.

The second inning started and ended just fine for Lester. He retired Alex Rodriguez on a grounder leading off, and struck out Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira to end the inning.

But the six batters in between weaved a nightmare for the Red Sox left-hander, culminating in Jeter’s three-run blast for a 6-0 lead.

Robinson Cano and Andruw Jones both singled around a Nick Swisher walk to load the bases for Montero, whose base hit scored the first run. Russell Martin followed with a two-run single and Jeter homered on the very next pitch, reaching out for a fastball and lining it into the right-center field seats.

Despite retiring the first two hitters, Lester couldn’t make it out of the third inning. Swisher and Jones both singled and Montero drove a ball to the wall in left-center, scoring both runners for an 8-0 lead. Scott Atchison then got the call and induced a fly out from Martin to end the frame.

Montero led off the sixth inning with his fourth homer of the season, a blast to right field off Junichi Tazawa that made it 9-0.

-- See Pinstripe Alley for complete discussion and analysis of the Yankees

The New York Yankees have already clinched the American League East title. They could just relax and enjoy the final six games of the regular season. The Yankees, though, get the chance to make the staggering Boston Red Sox squirm this weekend, and you know fans at Yankee Stadium the next three days would love to see them do just that.

The collapsing Red Sox have gone just 5-16 in September, including losses in five of their last six games. The Red Sox have watched a nine-game lead in the American League wild-card race shrivel to just two games over the Tampa Bay Rays, despite Tampa Bay losing three of four to the Yankees this week.

"We're going to have to fight for everything we get the rest of the way out and make it happen to get where we want to go," Boston manager Terry Francona said. "When that happens, hopefully you have a day off to regroup. We certainly haven't made it very easy for ourselves. That doesn't mean we can't get where we want to go. But we have our work cut out for us."

The Red Sox have their ace, Jon Lester, pitching Friday night. Lester (15-8) will be opposed by Freddy Garcia, who is 11-8 with a 3.77 ERA. Garcia is still trying to solidify a spot for himself in the Yankees' postseason starting pitching rotation.

No matter how the wild-card race turns out, and how the Yankees play the final six games, New York will have a hand in determining the outcome. After the series with Boston, the Yankees finish the season with three games in Tampa Bay against the Rays.
