Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - B.J. Upton, Johnny Damon and Ben Zobrist homered and drove in three runs apiece as the Rays pounded the AL East-champion New York Yankees, 15-8, to gain ground in the playoff hunt.

Matt Joyce had a two-run single in the first inning for Tampa Bay, which moved within two games of Boston for the lead in the wild card standings. The Rays lost three of four games in the Bronx, but will now head home to finish the season with three this weekend against Toronto and then a trio vs. the Yankees.

"You've got to run the table, but you have to do it on a nightly basis," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "As you're trying to do that, if you hit a bump in the road you still have to stick with the math. The math still works. You cannot give up."

The Red Sox, who were idle Thursday, play on the road against the Yankees this weekend before ending the season in Baltimore.

The Angels entered the day tied with Tampa Bay in the wild card standings, but lost in 12 innings to Toronto thanks to Edwin Encarnacion's home run.

Matt Moore (1-0), in his first major league start and third career appearance, had 11 strikeouts through five innings while giving up just four hits.

"Fortunately we put up a lot of runs early," Moore said. "It was great. It looked they were mad tonight."

The Yankees swept a doubleheader Wednesday, on the way to winning the division, but Bartolo Colon was pounded and New York committed four errors in the finale of this series. Colon (8-10) gave up seven hits and seven runs -- five earned -- over three innings. He's winless in his last nine appearances (0-4).

"It's location, it's movement," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of the reason for Colon's struggles. "It's some velocity as well. That's why there's concerns. You keep going forward and continue to evaluate."

Andruw Jones smacked a two-run homer and knocked in three for the Yankees, who fell behind 13-0 through five innings but made things somewhat interesting in the eighth.

A throwing error on second baseman Elliot Johnson allowed Chris Dickerson and Eduardo Nunez to score, pulling the hosts within seven runs. Jake McGee, Tampa Bay's third pitcher of the inning, fanned Jorge Posada with the bases full to end the frame.

The Rays loaded the bases with nobody out in the first during a wild inning for Colon, when he hit Upton with a pitch and walked Evan Longoria. Joyce grounded a single into right field for a 2-0 lead. Damon then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.

Upton hit an RBI triple in the second and scored on Longoria's double.

Zobrist homered to right with Damon aboard in the third, and the fourth saw more long distance shots. Upton and Damon each belted two-run homers and Reid Brignac's base hit plated Zobrist for a 12-0 cushion.

Upton scored on a Zobrist sac fly in the fifth before Jones homered in the sixth. Ramiro Pena and Jones each had RBI singles and Jesus Montero a two-run double in the New York seventh.

Dellin Betances hit Joyce with the bases full in the eighth and Russ Canzler added a sacrifice fly.

Game Notes

The Yanks have won nine of their 15 meetings with the Rays this season...The Yankees used a total of 16 different pitchers (of 19 total arms on the roster) during this four-game series...Pena snapped an 0-for-28 with his sixth-inning single...Betances and Andrew Brackman made their major league debuts on the mound for the Yankees...Moore's 11 strikeouts marked the most by a Rays pitcher in his first career start.

-- See Pinstripe Alley for complete Yankees discussion and analysis

The New York Yankees clinched the American League East title Wednesday night. That means they have little to play for over the next week as they watch Boston, Tampa Bay and Anaheim battle for the wild-card spot. The Yankees do, however, have some questions to answer during the next week.

Here are three that leap to mind:

1. Does Jorge Posada belong on the post-season roster?

Nice moment for Posada Wednesday, getting the division-clinching hit as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning. Will it be Posada's last hurrah as a Yankee. How does he fit on the post-season roster? Eric Chavez probably gets the lefty at-bats as a designated hitter, or at third base with Alex Rodriguez DH'ing. Posada can't hit right-handed. He can't catch. He can't pinch-run. What role is there for him?

2. Who starts after CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova

No question Nova (16-4) is No. 2 behind Sabathia. Still no clue, though, who the third and fourth starters are. You pick between A.J. Burnett, Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia and Phil Hughes. I'm not sure any of those options is incredibly appealing, and it seems manager Joe Girardi has yet to make up his mind.

3. Who is the backup catcher?

Francisco Cervelli has a concussion, and since this is not the first time this has happened to Cervelli he seems unlikely for the post-season. Posada has caught once this season, used in an emergency when Russell Martin got hurt and Cervelli was unavailable. It can't be him. That leaves rookie September call-ups Jesus Montero and Austin Romine. Best guess is both guys make the post-season roster, and if the Yankees absolutely have to use a second catcher it would be the more defensively advanced Romine, who currently has nine big-league at-bats.

The New York Yankees are the 2011 American League East champions. The Yankees clinched Wednesday by sweeping a double-header from the Tampa Bay Rays, both games by scores of 4-2, and having the Boston Red Sox lose to the Baltimore Orioles.

Perhaps it was appropriate that it was veteran Jorge Posada who delivered the clinching hit, a two-run pinch-hit single in the eighth-inning that snapped a 2-2 tie. Posada came on to bat for Jesus Montero with the bases loaded and punched a single to right. Might this have been Posada's last moment of glory as a Yankee? His spot on the postseason roster is anything but secure, and it seems unlikely the Yankees would bring Posada back next season.

Those, however, are matter for another day.

CC Sabathia pitched 7.1 innings in search of his 20th victory, but left with the score tied 2-2. David Robertson got two outs in the eighth inning and earned the victory. He is 4-0. Rafael Soriano closed out the game in the ninth inning for his second save. Soriano closed because Mariano Rivera worked in the first game Wednesday, getting the save in that game.

The Yankees will still have a hand in which team wins the AL wild-card. Boston leads Tampa Bay and Anaheim by 2.5 games for the final AL playoff spot. The Yankees have four games left with Tampa Bay and three with Boston, so they will have a direct hand in the outcome of the wild-card race.

The New York Yankees are in the American League playoffs for the 16th time in the last 17 seasons. The Yankees clinched a playoff berth Wednesday afternoon with a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the first game of a doubleheader. The Yankees can clinch the American League East title outright Wednesday night in the second game if they win and the second-place Boston Red Sox lose to the Baltimore Orioles.

The Yankees trailed, 2-1, heading to the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday. Eduardo Nunez tied the game with a solo home run off Tampa Bay started James Shields. Later in the inning Robinson Cano drove a double over the head of Rays center fielder B.J. Upton to drive in two runs and provide the Yankees with their winning margin.

Mariano Rivera, the all-time saves leaders, closed the game with a perfect ninth inning.

Phil Hughes was supposed to start for the Yankees, but he was replaced by Hector Noesi due to the lingering effects of back spasms. The Yankees wound up using eight pitchers and their bullpen put together 6.1 innings of shutout relief.

Yankee ace CC Sabathia will seek his 20th victory of the season in the second game.

The New York Yankees closed in Tuesday night on an American League East title virtually no one thought they could win when the 2011 season began. With a 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays the Yankees reduced their magic number to clinch a playoff spot to two. A victory in either half of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Rays and the Yankees are in.

Meanwhile, the faltering Boston Red Sox can thank the Yankees for helping them out for at least one more day. The Red Sox lost to Baltimore, 7-5, but stayed two games in front of Tampa Bay in the chase for the AL wild card thanks to the Yankee victory.

Two of the individuals most responsible for the Yankee success this season put their talents on full display Tuesday. Ivan Nova improved to 16-4 on the season with 7.2 impressive shutout innings. He has not lost a start since June 3, more than three months ago, and has won 12 straight decisions. Is there any doubt the 24-year-old right-hander has to be the Yankees' No. 2 starter behind CC Sabathia in the playoffs? I think not.

The other player is center fielder Curtis Granderson. He drove in four runs, three with a bases-loaded double, to increase his league-leading RBI total 119. He also has 41 home runs. Granderson's previous career highs were 30 home runs in 2009 and 74 RBI in 2007.

The New York Yankees hold a comfortable five-game lead in the American League Eastern Division with 10 games remaining in the 2011 regular season. They also hold the postseason fates of their closest competitors and rivals, the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays, in their hands.

That is because, beginning Tuesday night (7:05 p.m. ET, MY9) at Yankee Stadium the Yankees play all of their remaining games against those two teams. Seven of the games will be against Tampa Bay and three against Boston.

It has to be difficult today to be a fan of the Boston Red Sox. The teams is reeling, having watched the Rays slice a nine-game deficit on Sept. 2 down to just two games in the wild-card chase. Plus, over the next couple of weeks Boston fans have to root for the Yankees to slow down the red-hot Rays. That won't be easy for Red Sox Nation to stomach.

The four-game series with Tampa Bay begins tonight with the Yankees sending young Ivan Nova to the mound. Nova, 15-4, 3.81 ERA, has not been beaten in his last 11 decisions dating back to June 3. The Yankees and Rays play a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday and finish the series Thursday night. They finish the season against each other with three games in Tampa Bay.
