The New York Mets embarrassing season continued Thursday at Citi Field in a 10-1 loss to the Washington Nationals. After yet another uninspired performance that showed the Mets are not anywhere near being competitive, Terry Collins had finally had enough.

"It’s pretty simple. You go through stretches and this is one of them, but perception is reality in our game and the perception I have is that we folded it up," the manager said in a testy post-game press conference.

This team has been checked out for most of the season, but it's never been as bad as it has been the last week. Mental and physical errors once again littered the field with third baseman David Wright continuing to lead the way, the only way he has ever led this team.

Wright was 1-4 against the lowly Nationals pitching while seeing just 11 pitches in four plate appearances. He was 0-2 with runners in scoring position, including a pop-up with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh inning with the Mets down just two runs. Wright also continued his terrible play at third base by committing his 18th error.

As seems to be a trend of theirs, New York's ineptitude allowed a rookie to look like an ace as Nationals pitcher Tom Milone earned his first career win. Milone allowed just the one run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Rookie Chris Schwinden was one of the few Mets to look like a big leaguer, limiting Washington to just one earned run over five innings while tossing just 79 pitches.

The Mets bullpen let the game get out of hand in the eighth and ninth innings when the Nationals scored seven of their 10 runs.

The four-game sweep by the Nationals is just the second they have completed since moving to Washington in 2005 and first time sweeping any road series this season.

Luckily there aren't many fans showing up to the games at Citi Field to see this terrible level of play, but Collins knows that the few that do see it have every right to be up in arms.

"Our fans should be upset. I don’t blame them one bit," he said

New York will return to action Friday when the Atlanta Braves will gladly welcome the Mets to Turner Field for a three-game set.

Though it's hard to believe and even harder to tell if he was trying to convince himself, the Mets fans or his players, Collins says the team will be better the last two weeks of the season.

"We’re not done."

Johan Santana will not be making any major-league appearances over the final couple of weeks of the season.

The left-hander, working his way back from shoulder surgery, is expected to make one final minor-league start and then pitch in the Instructional League.

“If we get him through this Instructional League program, it might be time to let him go rest so we can get ready for next February,” said Mets manager Terry Collins.

If this is the best route the Mets feel they can take to get the two-time Cy Young Award winner ready for the 2012 season then, by all means, Mets fans should be on board with it. Somehow, though, it would have been comforting to see Santana pitch even a couple of innings at the big-league level over the next couple of weeks. At the very least, it might have given Mets’ fans a reason to pay attention.

(Sports Network) – The New York Mets hope to put the brakes on their five-game losing streak when they wrap up a four-game series versus the Washington Nationals this afternoon from Citi Field.

The Mets look to salvage the finale of this series after dropping the first three installments, including Wednesday’s 2-0 setback. Mike Pelfrey pitched well in defeat and yielded just two unearned runs over seven innings with six strikeouts and two walks. The Mets are 4-7 in Pelfrey’s last 11 starts.

Justin Turner’s pinch-hit double in the seventh inning was the only extra-base hit for the Mets, who have lost seven of eight games and managed just four hits. Jose Reyes has recorded at least one hit in 16 of the 17 games he’s played in since returning from the disabled list on August 29. Reyes is not expected to play on Thursday.

“We’re getting some balls we can hit but we’re just not hitting them. It’s just one of those things that clubs go through,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.

New York will begin a six-game road trip against Atlanta and St. Louis this weekend. Chris Schwinden will make his second career start for the Mets today and lost his MLB debut in a 6-5 loss to Atlanta last Thursday. The right- hander lasted five innings and was reached for five runs and eight hits with four K’s and one walk. He’s pitching in place of veteran Miguel Batista.

Schwinden went 8-8 with a 3.95 ERA in 26 starts with Triple-A Buffalo. He struck out 134 batters over 145 2/3 innings with 48 walks.

Washington has won four in a row and five of six games. In Wednesday’s close win over the Mets, Michael Morse and Jayson Werth drove in both runs during the top of the third inning and Chris Marrero ended with two hits.

Brad Peacock earned the win with five shutout innings in his first career start and Drew Storen tossed the ninth for his 37th save of the season.

“After I threw that first pitch I was fine,” Peacock said. “I just made sure I took deep breaths out there and settled in nicely.”

Peacock pitched 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen September 6 in his only other major league appearance. Washington has not allowed a home run in its last nine games.

Taking the hill for the Nationals today will be Tommy Milone, who will make his third career start of the season. He has no record in his first two trips to the hill to go along with a 6.30 earned run average and previously pitched in Friday’s 4-3 win versus Houston. Milone allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings that day.

Milone, a left-hander, made his major league debut in an 8-7 win over the Mets on Sept. 3 and was reached for four runs through 4 1/3 frames.

Washington is 9-8 against the Mets this season and is aiming for its first four-game sweep in Flushing, NY since the Montreal Expos won all four meetings at Shea Stadium from Sept. 18-21, 2003.

If the New York Mets are seeking to improve their draft position next season, their play of late has certainly secured those desires. Facing a talented young starter making his first major league start, the Mets managed two hits. The Washington Nationals’ Brad Peacock blanked them for five innings and the offense, which had four hits in the game, was dormant. As a result, they lost 2-0. It’s their fifth straight loss, and seventh of their past eight games.

The only two hitters to get base knocks against Peacock were Ruben Tejada and Jason Bay, who both managed singles. New York as 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, and their struggles at the plate were heavily magnified in the ninth inning.

Nationals closer Drew Storen couldn’t find the strike zone. He walked Jason Bay, then walked Willie Harris, who was pinch hitting for Justin Satin. But, in my belief, manager Terry Collins made the wrong move, asking Justin Turner to bunt in the next at bat. Even if Turner had gotten the bunt down, I would’ve said it was a bad move: the closer was extremely erratic. Take a few pitches, look fastball in your hot zone, and swing away. Instead, Turner popped his bunt on the third pitch to Storen. It gave Storen some life, and he fired two straight strikes to Jason Pride, before getting him to ground into a fielder’s choice. Jose Reyes followed up with a ball laced into left center field that Rick Ankiel made an unbelievable diving play to end the game.

I understand there’s just under two weeks left in the season, but the Mets have looked extremely lifeless as of late. They’re now tied with the Nats for third place in the NL East.

On the bright side, MIke Pelfrey was excellent in the loss, allowing two unearned runs in seven innings and striking out six. Those two unearned runs came in Wright’s seventh error of his past 10 games.

(Sports Network) – Rookie right-hander Brad Peacock makes the first start of his major-league career tonight when the Washington Nationals play the New York Mets in the third test of a four-game set at Citi Field.

A 23-year-old from Palm Beach, Fla., Peacock was a 41st-round draft choice out of high school in 2006 and pitched for six teams in six leagues in five seasons while climbing through Washington’s minor-league system.

He was 34-38 overall with a 3.93 earned run average in 113 games since 2007, but ratcheted things up in 2011, going 15-3 in Double-A and Triple-A with a 2.39 ERA over 146 2/3 innings.

He relieved phenom Stephen Strasburg in his big-league debut on Sept. 6 against Los Angeles and gave up a run on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of a game Washington lost, 7-3.

The Nationals are using an extra pitcher in order to give Strasburg five days’ rest between starts.

In Tuesday’s second game, Ryan Zimmerman singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, sending Washington past the Mets, 3-2.

Rick Ankiel and Michael Morse each drove in a run for the Nationals, who have won three straight and four of five games, including Monday’s opener by the same score.

Craig Stammen (1-1) earned the win in relief of starter Chien-Ming Wang, who gave up two runs on nine hits over five innings.

Dillon Gee lasted 5 2/3 frames and was charged with two runs on six hits for New York, which has dropped four straight and six of seven games.

The Mets will start 6-foot-7 righty Mike Pelfrey, who’s 0-1 in three appearances since winning, 7-4, at Philadelphia on Aug. 24.

He dropped a 6-0 verdict against Florida in a subsequent outing on Aug. 30 before getting a no-decision in his 17th career start against the Nationals on Sept. 4, a game the Mets won, 6-3.

Pelfrey is 4-6 overall against Washington with a 4.30 ERA in 120 2/3 innings, allowing 104 hits and 51 runs with 47 walks and 53 strikeouts.

The Mets are 5-5 in his last 10 starts, with Pelfrey going 2-2 with six no- decisions in that span.

New York has split its 16 meetings with Washington this season.

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) – Ryan Zimmerman singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, sending the Nationals past the Mets, 3-2, in the second meeting of a four-game series.

Rick Ankiel and Michael Morse each drove in a run for Washington, which has won four of its last five, including Monday’s series opener by the same score.

Craig Stammen (1-1) scored the game-deciding run and earned the win in relief of starter Chien-Ming Wang, who gave up two runs on nine hits in five innings.

“I’m pleased with what I’m seeing [with Wang]. … He’s giving us a chance to win,” Nationals manager Davey Johnson said.

Dillon Gee lasted 5 2/3 frames and was charged with two runs on six hits for New York, which has dropped four straight.

Tuesday was Star Wars night at Citi Field, but the outcome seemed like a rerun of a bad movie for the Mets, who gave up the go-ahead run in the seventh frame for the second straight night.

Stammen, after stranding runners on second and third in the sixth, singled off Dale Thayer (0-2) with one out and eventually scored on Zimmerman’s single through the left side of the infield.

New York was hitless against Washington’s bullpen until Jose Reyes and Ruben Tejada each singled with two away in the ninth.

Lucas Duda, looking for his second career four-hit game, swung at strike three in the dirt to end the rally and finish off Drew Storen’s 36th save.

The Mets broke a scoreless tie in the fifth when Duda’s single allowed Reyes and Tejada to score, the latter sliding in safely after Jayson Werth kicked the ball around in right field.

Ankiel, who threw out Josh Thole at home plate prior to Duda’s hit, doubled in a run in the sixth and later scored on Morse’s two-bagger to tie it.

“I let myself get more rushed every pitch. I sped myself up,” Gee said of the sixth.

Reyes reached base four times on three hits and one walk…The Mets stranded 10 runners…The season series is tied, 8-8, with two to play.

(Sports Network) – Second-year phenom Dillon Gee can stay unbeaten in his brief career against the Washington Nationals tonight when the New York Mets play the second of four games at Citi Field.

Washington won the opener on Monday when Steve Lombardozzi singled in the go- ahead run in the seventh inning of a 3-2 triumph.

Wilson Ramos went 2-for-4 and drove in a run for the Nationals, who have won three of four.

Todd Coffey (5-1) struck out the reigning NL Player of the Week, Jason Bay, to strand two runners in the sixth, earning the win behind Ross Detwiler.

Mets starter R.A. Dickey (8-12) yielded three runs — two earned — on eight hits in the loss, New York’s third straight. The knuckleballer fanned seven in as many innings.

Gee, a 25-year-old Texas native, is 3-0 in four career starts against Washington, including an 8-5 win at Nationals Park on July 29.

In that game, Gee allowed two earned runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking four batters and striking out five.

He’s faced them one more time since and escaped with a no-decision after surrendering six runs on eight hits in five innings of an 8-7 New York loss.

In 32 major-league appearances across two seasons, Gee has allowed 86 runs in 177 2/3 innings, walking 77 batters and striking out 120.

Starting for Washington is returning veteran Chien-Ming Wang, who came back from a two-year injury hiatus in late June and has won two of five decisions in eight starts.

He dropped the initial two games of his comeback against the Mets and Atlanta, then subsequently beat the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati before losing again at Atlanta on Sept. 1.

Against the Mets on July 29, he lasted just four innings and was touched for six runs on eight hits while facing Gee for the first time.

Lifetime against New York, he is 2-2 in four starts with a 5.26 earned run average in 25 2/3 innings.

New York has won eight of 15 over Washington this season.
