Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) – Peter Bourjos’ error on a Mark Teixeira fly in the seventh inning led to the deciding runs, as the New York Yankees avoided a sweep by taking a 6-5 decision over the Angels in the finale of a three-game series.

“He dropped it and we caught a break,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. “‘Tex’ drove the ball a long way and the sun helped us out. We had some tough losses here. To get this one was important.”

Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter singled to start the frame against Ervin Santana (11-11), then Scott Downs came on in relief. He fanned Curtis Granderson, but the Halos center fielder failed to catch Teixeira’s hit, and both men scored to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead.

“I got a good jump on it and got back to the wall, but it just flashed in the sun,” Bourjos explained on what led to his gaffe. “It’s a play I have to make. It’s hard to swallow. That was the turning point and it cost us the game.”

Cory Wade (5-0) pitched a perfect sixth inning for the win. Mariano Rivera turned in a scoreless ninth to earn his 40th save of the year and his 599th career save.

Granderson slugged a two-run homer, Robinson Cano added a solo shot and Eric Chavez notched an RBI single for the Yankees, who put an end to their four-game slide.

New York opened up a 3 1/2 game lead over Boston in the AL East, with the Red Sox losing in Tampa earlier Sunday.

Freddy Garcia allowed seven hits and five runs with three walks and as many strikeouts in his five-inning outing.

Howie Kendrick and Bourjos each contributed a two-run homer for the Angels, whose three-game win streak was snapped. Los Angeles fell 2 1/2 games back of AL West-leading Texas after the Rangers topped Oakland.

Santana ultimately lasted six-plus frames, charged with eight hits and six runs, fanning eight but walking four.

Erick Aybar led off the first with a single and Kendrick followed with a two- run shot.

Chavez put New York on the board with a second-inning RBI single, then the Halos took a 3-1 edge in the home third when Garcia uncorked a wild pitch with two men in scoring position to plate Bobby Wilson.

Cano’s one-out solo homer made it a one-run contest in the fourth, but Alberto Callaspo walked with one down and Bourjos launched a two-run shot to make it 5-2.

Jeter began the fifth with a single and Granderson pulled the Yanks within 5-4 when he followed with a two-run blast. The Angels had the bases loaded with one out in the home half but failed to extend their edge when Trumbo popped out and Callaspo grounded out.

LA also failed to score with runners on second and third in the home seventh.

Aybar singled with one out in the ninth, but Kendrick grounded into a game- ending double play.

“We shot ourselves in the foot all day. We left too many men on base and it came back to haunt us,” noted Angels manager Mike Scioscia. “We didn’t play the type of game to win.”

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) – Dan Haren had the Yankees’ number on Saturday, tossing a four-hit shutout en route to a 6-0 victory for the Angels.

Haren (15-8) denied CC Sabathia his 20th win, as he struck out seven and did not walk a batter. He allowed just one runner to reach second base after Derek Jeter led off the game with a double.

“I attacked the zone and didn’t walk anyone. I had good stuff,” Haren said.

A third straight win pulled Los Angeles within 1 1/2 games of the AL West- leading Rangers.

Sabathia (19-8) gave up just one run on eight hits and four walks over six frames for the AL East leaders, who dropped their fourth game in a row but still lead the Red Sox by 2 1/2 games.

“We’re not swinging the bats,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s frustrating, but we’ll bounce back.”

Maicer Izturis’ two-out, RBI double in the second inning was the only run scored in the first six frames.

Hector Noesi relieved Sabathia in the seventh and promptly surrendered four runs. Mike Trout singled in Torii Hunter and Erick Aybar flew out deep enough to center to plate Mark Trumbo, who walked after Hunter was hit by a pitch.

Jeff Mathis followed with a two-run shot, and Hunter’s solo blast in the eighth off George Kontos capped the scoring.

NOTE: Catcher Russell Martin left the game in the second inning. With backup Francisco Cervelli also hurt, Jorde Posada was forced to catch for the first time this season.

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) – A bases-loaded sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter Maicer Izturis sent the Angels to a 2-1 win over the New York Yankees.

Los Angeles, which has won 11 of its last 13 at Angel Stadium, remained 2 1/2 games behind Texas for first place in the AL West. The Rangers won at home against Oakland Friday night.

Alberto Callaspo legged out an infield single on a grounder to the left side off Aaron Laffey (2-2) and was pinch-run for by Jeremy Moore. Vernon Wells singled to left off Luis Ayala. Brett Gardner was playing deep, giving the speedy Moore a chance to race to third. After Wells took second base, Peter Bourjos was brushed with a pitch on his jersey to load the bases. Izturis then lifted a fly ball to center and the Angels won without a play at the plate.

“I think there was more pressure on him (Ayala) than me with the bases loaded and no outs,” Izturis said. “I just tried to put a good swing on it. It was a fastball right down the middle.”

Jesus Montero continued his power surge with a home run, giving him three in his first six major league games, but the Yankees lost their third straight game. Despite the setback, they remained 2 1/2 games ahead of the Red Sox in the AL East, as Boston lost to Tampa Bay earlier Friday.

Jered Weaver was spectacular for the Angels, allowing three hits and compiling 11 strikeouts over eight innings. Jordan Walden (5-3) walked Alex Rodriguez with one out in the ninth, but pinch-runner Eduardo Nunez was caught stealing on a pitch-out, helping the Angels to their fifth victory in six games.

“I felt great. Jeff (Mathis) and I were on the same page all night and the defense made some great plays behind me,” Weaver said. “Everybody came up big tonight. I’m glad we were able to come out on top.”

Montero homered to left field to start the third, but Weaver was awesome in the late going. After walking Andruw Jones to start the fifth, he retired 11 straight batters leading to Derek Jeter’s base hit in the eighth.

The Angels tied it in the fifth when Howie Kendrick broke an 0-for-18 slump vs. the Yankees with a line single to right that scored Bourjos.

Bartolo Colon scattered six hits over seven innings in the start for the Yankees.

“We’re not swinging the bats as well as we can,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “We ran into a good pitcher tonight. He can throw strikes anytime he wants.”

-- See Pinstripe Alley for complete Yankees discussion and analysis

The New York Yankees are in Anaheim Friday night to face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (10:05 p.m. ET). Bartolo Coloin (8-9) faces LA's Jared Weaver (16-7) as the Yankees begin a nine-game road trip that will also take them to Seattle to face the Mariners and Toronto to play the Blue Jays.

With 20 games left in the regular season the Yankees (87-55) find themselves 2.5 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. That the Yankees would be out front in the division this late in the season has be be considered a surprise, since nearly every prognosticator on the planet -- including every ESPN expert who made a prediction -- chose Boston to win the division this season.

Can the Yankees hang on? It would be nice, but probably really does not matter. Both the Yankees and Red Sox are headed for the playoffs, unless one team or the other suffers an epic collapse over the final three weeks of the season.

Regardless, if you are up late this evening and look for something to watch, remember that the Yankees are on late.
