Bronx, NY (Sports Network) – Derek Jeter hit a three-run homer and tied a career high with five RBI, while CC Sabathia pitched into the eighth inning, as the New York Yankees dropped Toronto, 9-3, in the finale of a three-game set from Yankee Stadium.

Nick Swisher added a two-run shot and Alex Rodriguez hit a solo blast for the Yankees, who swept the series and have won seven of eight overall. New York moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Boston in the AL East after the Red Sox lost to Texas later Sunday.

“You always aim to win the division, and that was our goal at the beginning of the season, even before thinking about the World Series,” Sabathia admitted.

Sabathia (19-7) won his third straight decision by allowing six hits and two runs over 7 1/3 innings, fanning 10 with one walk.

“You don’t when he’s like that,” said acting Jays manager Don Wakamatsu when asked if any team can win when Sabathia pitches well. “He takes you so deep into ballgames that you have to say the hitters need to do a better job, but I don’t know how you do that.”

Mark Teahen finished with a pair of hits and drove in a run and Jose Bautista posted a solo homer for the Blue Jays, who have lost eight of 11.

Brett Cecil (4-8) was charged in defeat for five hits and five runs — four earned — over six full frames.

Toronto picked up two in the fourth on Teahen’s RBI double and a ground out by Jose Molina, but Rodriguez added a solo homer to right in the sixth for a 5-2 New York advantage.

Bautista deposited a Rafael Soriano pitch deep into the left-field bleachers for his 40th homer of the year with one down in the eighth to cut the Jays’ deficit to 5-3, but Robinson Cano singled with one out in the home half and Swisher hit the second deck in right for a 7-3 contest.

Jeter added a two-run single later in the frame and Cory Wade turned in a scoreless ninth to lock up the victory.

The Yanks picked up a run in the first when Brett Gardner led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Mark Teixeira’s infield single to third when Mike McCoy threw wild to first.

In the third, Miguel Montero’s leadoff hit was followed by Gardner’s plunking, and Jeter followed with a three-run shot to left and a 4-0 lead.

“This is the fun part of the season,” Jeter said. “It can get long, but it’s September now people spend a lot more time paying attention to the races, who’s in first and second.”

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Robinson Cano's two-run double put the Yankees ahead in a three-run seventh inning, lifting New York to a 6-4 victory over Toronto.

Francisco Cervelli belted a two-run homer for the Yankees, who have won three in a row and welcomed Alex Rodriguez back to the lineup. The star third baseman had missed the past six games with a jammed thumb and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored while batting third instead of in his customary cleanup spot.

Cano batted fourth and his lone hit of the game erased a 4-3 deficit after Curtis Granderson was hit by a pitch with two outs and Rodriguez drew a walk. Nick Swisher, playing first base for the second straight day in place of an ailing Mark Teixeira, singled home Cano for a two-run edge and David Robertson worked the final two innings for the save.

Mariano Rivera and Rafael Soriano were both unavailable for New York after pitching each of the last two games. Robertson, who did not pitch in Friday's 3-2 win, got the final six outs to notch his first save since August 12, 2010.

Dewayne Wise tripled, homered and scored twice for Toronto, which has lost two straight after winning three of its previous four. Adam Lind also homered in defeat.

Toronto starter Ricky Romero (13-10) worked 6 2/3 innings and was charged with five runs on eight hits, suffering his first loss since July 16 against New York. He had been 6-0 in has last eight starts.

Romero retired the first two batters of the seventh, then hit Granderson and issued the free pass to Rodriguez before being lifted. Casey Janssen took the mound and Cano, who had the go-ahead hit on Friday night, greeted him with a drive over the head of Wise in center to score both runners. Swisher followed with a run-scoring base hit to make it 6-4.

Robertson had a quick eighth before running into some trouble in the ninth. He surrendered a one-out double to Brett Lawrie, but retired J.P. Arencibia on a grounder and fanned Mike McCoy to end the game.

"I knew that I didn't have either of them," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi about Rivera and Soriano. "I wasn't going to pitch them no matter what. [Robertson] had a pretty quick eighth inning, which allowed us to put him out for the ninth. He did an excellent job."

Boone Logan (5-2) was credited with the victory after retiring the only two batters he faced in relief of Bartolo Colon. The Yankee starter gave up four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out seven.

After a Cano double-play grounder killed a potential rally to end the bottom of the first inning, the Jays struck for a pair of runs in the top of the second. Lind opened the frame with his 24th homer and back-to-back singles by Edwin Encarnacion and Kelly Johnson set up an Arencibia sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

The Yankees responded with three in the home half. Andruw Jones doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Eduardo Nunez before Cervelli followed with his third homer of the season.

Wise, who entered the game after Eric Thames left the contest early because of dizziness, led off the third with a triple into the right field corner and scored on a base hit by Jose Bautista to tie it. Wise gave Toronto a 4-3 edge in the fifth with his first homer.

Teixeira missed his second straight game because of a bruised knee...New York shortstop Derek Jeter also had the day off...Top Yankee prospect Jesus Montero picked up his first big league hit with a single in the sixth inning.

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Ivan Nova simply keeps winning.

The Yankees rookie shook off a pair of first-inning runs and held the Blue Jays scoreless over the next six frames, as Brett Gardner's two-run homer and Robinson Cano's RBI single proved to be enough in New York's 3-2 victory.

Nova (15-4) allowed just three hits and two walks en route to his eighth straight winning start and 11th consecutive positive decision.

"I know what I can do. I have to stay hungry and keep winning games," said Nova.

The Yankees have won five of their last six to jump over the Red Sox for AL East supremacy, though it's a tenuous half-game advantage over Boston.

Brandon Morrow (9-10) gave up three runs on four hits over a six-inning start for Toronto, which came into the three-game series having won three of four.

Derek Jeter started a two-out rally in the fifth inning with a base hit to center. Curtis Granderson worked a five-pitch walk to move Jeter into scoring position, and Cano's single in front of center fielder Mike McCoy broke a 2-2 tie.

The only hit Nova allowed after the first was Eric Thames' two-out double in the sixth. He stranded the runner by getting Adam Lind to fly out to center.

Rafael Soriano relieved Nova in the eighth and worked around a one-out single, and Mariano Rivera hurled a 1-2-3 ninth for his 37th save.

Nova gave up a walk and consecutive singles to start his outing, with Jose Bautista's base hit through the right side bringing in Yunel Escobar. Lind followed with a sacrifice fly, and Edwin Encarnacion appeared to tack on more when he laced a line drive down the left-field line.

Gardner, though, made a diving grab for the out and doubled off Bautista at first to keep it 2-0, then tied it with his sixth home run of the season in the third. Russell Martin walked ahead of the blast.

"I took my foot off the gas a little bit to Gardner. ... I just left the ball in the middle. It's the one pitch I would want to have back," Morrow said.

Nova also received some defensive support when Andruw Jones made a perfectly- timed jump at the right-field wall to take away a potential home run from Bautista in the fourth.

The Yankees are 18-5 in games started by Nova this season...Nova trails only Russ Ford and Atley Donald for most consecutive winning decisions by a Yankees rookie. Ford and Donald won 12 in a row in the 1910 and 1939 seasons, respectively.

-- See Pinstripe Alley for complete discussion and analysis

(Sports Network) - Ivan Nova tries to win his 11th straight decision this evening when the New York Yankees open a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.

Nova improved to 6-0 since a stint in the minors on Sunday in Baltimore, as he allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings to run his record to 14-4, while lowering his earned run average to 3.96. The American League Rookie of the Year candidate hasn't lost since falling to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim back on June 3.

"It's good, but seriously, I don't pay too much attention," said Nova, who has won his last seven starts. "I think I'm a big part of the team and we need to win games. That's all that matters."

Nova beat the Blue Jays the last time he faced them and is 1-1 in four games (three starts) against them with a 4.24 ERA.

The Yanks picked up a much-needed series win in Boston on Thursday, as Russell Martin's two-run double in the seventh inning propelled New York to a 4-2 victory.

Eric Chavez added an RBI single in the deciding frame for the Yankees, who took two of three from their perennial rivals and crept within a half-game of first-place Boston in the AL East after the four-hour, 21-minute marathon was complete.

Toronto, meanwhile, enters on the heels of a series win as well after Brett Lawrie went 3-for-5 and hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, as the Blue Jays got past Baltimore, 8-6, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Camden Yards on Thursday.

Yunel Escobar went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Kelly Johnson hit a solo homer for the Blue Jays, who have won three of four.

Toronto starter Luis Perez gave up five runs on six hits over five-plus innings. He struck out six and walked three. Shawn Camp (2-3) recorded the final two outs in the seventh to pick up the win.

Getting the call for the Jays tonight will be righty Brandon Morrow, who is 9-9 with a 4.79 ERA. Morrow lost his second straight start on Sunday, when Tampa ripped him for five runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.
