The New York Yankees won’t have a decision to make regarding Houston Astros’ left-hander Wandy Rodriguez after all. The Yankees were rumored to be interested in the Houston starter, but will not get the opportunity since he has been claimed by the Colorado Rockies.

The Astros can now negotiate a trade with Colorado or pull Rodriguez back from waivers and keep him.

The Rockies are just 61-68 and seemingly not in contention in the National League West. Colorado traded Ubaldo Jiminez to Cleveland at the trading deadline, seemingly dumping salary. The Rockies apparently want Houston to pay at least part of Rodriguez’s remaining salary.

Rodriguez, 32, is owed slightly more than $1 million for the rest of this season, $10 million in 2012 and $13 million in 2013.

Purple Row believes that the Rockies have made this claim with an eye toward the team’s 2012 starting rotation, which has several question marks.

-- See Pinstripe Alley for complete discussion and analysis

The New York Yankees might be interested in Houston Astros' left-handed starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez. Or, they might not. It all depends on what reports you read -- and who you believe.

What we know for sure, according to various reports, is that the 32-year-old Rodriguez has been placed on waivers and could clear today. If you are not familiar, as of Aug. 1 players must pass thru waivers and go unclaimed before a team can trade them.

ESPN reported that the Yankees were not interested in Rodriguez (9-9, 3.31 ERA) because they "feel as if they have six starters for five spots right now and don't see how Rodriguez would fit into their rotation." The New York Post, though, says the Yankees "have been following the cash-dumping Astros."

Ahh, who to believe? We really don't know.

Why would the Yankees want Rodriguez? It does appear that they already have six starters for five spots. Look closer, though, and maybe the Yankees are not certain about the guys they have.

Beyond CC Sabathia all of the Yankee starters have experienced ups and downs this season. Right now Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes are pitching very well. Beyond that, though, question marks. Freddy Garcia is on the disabled list, although he should be back shortly from a cut finger. A.J. Burnett has been terrible, which we talked about over the weekend. Bartolo Colon has a 5.17 ERA in August and there is concern that he is wearing down.

The Yankees could be looking for another potential option for the postseason. Rodriguez, 71-73 for hsi career with a 4.07 ERA, is in the first year of a three-year, $34-million contract.
