Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Once again, Carlos Beltran's bat was not missed in the middle of the New York lineup.

On the day Beltran officially left the Mets in a trade with the San Francisco Giants, Lucas Duda and Jason Bay each hit three-run doubles in a 10-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds to complete a four-game sweep at Great American Ball Park.

The Mets banged out 11 hits, six for extra bases, in Wednesday's 8-2 win when the Beltran deal was first announced, and on Thursday were even more potent with 14 hits, although only 10 were singles.

Bay finished 3-for-4 and Duda was 2-for-4, while David Wright and Angel Pagan each had three hits for New York, which built a 9-3 cushion after five innings and had to withstand a huge Cincinnati comeback.

The offense made a winner of Chris Capuano (9-10) for the first time since July 4. He had lost three straight starts and didn't pitch particularly well on Thursday, allowing six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey (5-5) entered the contest with wins in his first two starts following the All-Star break. He had surrendered just three runs in 13 1/3 innings of those two outings, but on Thursday was roughed up for nine runs on 12 hits in four-plus innings.

Miguel Cairo belted a pinch-hit, three-run homer for the Reds, who had won three of four before the Mets reached town. Joey Votto doubled in a run and clubbed a solo homer, as 10 of Cincinnati's 13 hits went for extra bases.

Joey Votto hit his second home run in as many nights and Jay Bruce had a triple for the Reds.

Despite the absence of Beltran, the Mets' bats were alive early as they pushed two across in the top of the first.

Jose Reyes and Wright singled around a Willie Harris strikeout and a Murphy flyout. They advanced on a passed ball and crossed the plate on Pagan's double down the right field line.

"They got a big two-out hit from Pagan and we didn't get a whole lot going," said Reds manager Dusty Baker.

Votto belted an opposite field solo shot in the fourth to put the Reds on the board.

A half-inning later, with Harris and Reyes on first and third, respectively, Murphy ripped a sinking liner to right. Bruce charged and dove, but the ball went under his glove, allowing Reyes to score and Murphy to reach second. Wright's subsequent sac fly plated Harris.

Duda padded the Mets' lead with a leadoff shot in the sixth and Wright added a three-run blast an inning later to put the game away.

Bruce tripled and scored on Chris Heisey's sac fly in the home half, but the run proved moot.

"We obviously traded one of our best players," said Wright. "But there are still games to be played and there's still games where we need to go out there and play well to win. We were able to do that tonight."

Game Notes

Prior to the game, the Mets reportedly dealt Beltran and cash considerations to the Giants in exchange for pitching prospect Zack Wheeler. The deal is pending approval from both Beltran and major league baseball...The Mets are 31-25 on the road this season. They won a total of 32 road games in 2010...Reyes has scored at least one run in nine straight games. The Mets are 35-21 this season when Reyes scores a run...Wright is 12-for-28 with two home runs and 11 RBI since returning from the DL on Friday...The Reds were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

(Sports Network) – Towering right-hander Mike Pelfrey can make it three straight wins for New York in Cincinnati tonight when the Mets visit the host Reds in game three of a four-game matchup at Great American Ball Park.

A 6-foot-7, 230-pounder out of Wichita State, Pelfrey won his fifth game of the season at Los Angeles on July 5, tossing six shutout innings with five hits allowed in a 6-0 defeat of the Dodgers.

He’s gone 0-2 in three starts since, allowing a combined 19 hits and 10 runs in 17 innings against San Francisco (loss), Philadelphia (loss) and Florida (no-decision).

Pelfrey has faced the Reds seven times in his career and won three times in five decisions while allowing 24 earned runs in 37 innings.

The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the series Tuesday, when Jason Pridie hit a go- ahead two-run double in the sixth and the Mets took advantage of three Cincinnati errors to down the Reds, 8-6.

Daniel Murphy went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Mets.

Jon Niese (10-8) earned the win despite surrendering five runs in as many innings.

Tim Byrdak retired one batter in the ninth to record his first save since July 25, 2007.

Let down by his defense, Johnny Cueto (6-4) allowed six unearned runs on seven hits over five-plus innings to suffer the loss.

Joey Votto belted a two-run homer.

For Cincinnati, righty Bronson Arroyo aims for a first win since June 25 amid a streak of two losses and two no-decisions in four starts.

The Key West, Fla. native took the third of three straight decisions with a 10-5 interleague win at Baltimore, allowing nine hits and five runs in 6 1/3 innings.

He’s faced Cleveland, St. Louis (twice) and Atlanta since, allowing four or more runs in each start while surrendering nine, six, eight and nine hits, respectively.

He is 7-2 in 11 career starts against the Mets, posting a 3.31 earned run average in 81 2/3 innings.

"It's gratifying to grind it out with all the ups and downs," Mets relief pitcher Tim Byrdak said.

Joey Votto belted a two-run homer.

The Reds, whose three errors matched a season-high, were flawed from the start.

Justin Turner reached with a one-out double in the first, and Carlos Beltran followed with a soft line drive to Votto, who failed to see the ball into his glove, putting runners on the corners. Turner scored on David Wright's groundout before Murphy lifted a fly ball to right. Drew Stubbs was in position, but failed to make the basket catch as Beltran crossed the plate. Murphy was credited with a hit.

In the third, Jose Reyes reached on an error by Brandon Phillips before Turner's single placed runners on the corners. Beltran then plated Reyes with a single, but Turner was cut down trying to take third.

Wright followed with a base hit and Murphy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jason Bay's sacrifice fly to center scored Beltran and gave the Mets a 4-0 lead.

"[Cueto] was throwing the ball pretty good, but they batted around twice before we batted around once," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

Phillips singled in the fourth, stole second and crossed the plate on Chris Heisey's base hit. Heisey was a late addition to the lineup after the Reds traded Jonny Gomes to the Nationals prior to the game.

Ramon Hernandez and Stubbs reached in the home fifth and Edgar Renteria pushed them both across with a double down the line in right.

The Reds grabbed the lead one batter later on Votto's opposite field homer.

The advantage was short-lived, however, as Cincinnati again hurt itself with errors.

Bay began the sixth with a walk before Ronny Paulino slapped a tailor-made double-play ball to Miguel Cairo. Instead of turning two, Cairo attempted to play the ball off to his side and allowed it to roll into the outfield. Pridie took advantage, scoring Bay and Paulino with double to right.

Hernandez reached with a two-out single in the bottom half and pinch-hitter Yonder Alonso doubled down the right field line, but Hernandez -- more akin to a turtle than a jackrabbit -- was held at third.

Manny Acosta, who spelled Niese to begin the frame, put down Stubbs on strikes to escape.

Murphy and Angel Pagan added insurance in the seventh. Murphy's base hit scored Beltran and, later in the frame, Pagan scored Murphy with a bases- loaded, pinch-hit blooper to center.

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) – Daniel Murphy’s tie-breaking, two-run double highlighted a four-run seventh inning, as the New York Mets escaped with 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of a four-game series.

Carlos Beltran and Jason Bay both knocked in a run in the decisive frame as the Mets halted a two-game skid.

R.A. Dickey (5-8) turned in a strong outing, allowing just two runs on eight hits while fanning seven over 6 2/3 innings.

Cincinnati loaded the bases with two down in the bottom of the ninth, but Jason Isringhausen struck out Brandon Phillips to earn his third save of the season.

Mike Leake (8-6) surrendered two runs over 6 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.

Phillips and Drew Stubbs, who delivered a walkoff home run in Sunday’s 4-3 victory over the Braves, each had an RBI for the Reds.

Stubbs went down looking with men on second and third to end the fifth, but the Reds broke through an inning later, as Phillips ripped a double to right to score Miguel Cairo, who led off with a single.

Similarly, the Mets stranded two in the sixth before getting on the board in the seventh. They placed runners on the corners following back-to-back, one- out singles from Jose Reyes and Justin Turner, effectively chasing Leake.

Bill Bray entered and allowed an equalizing sac fly to Beltran before handing the ball to Logan Ondrusek. David Wright greeted Ondrusek with a single before Murphy and Bay hit consecutive doubles to make it a 4-1 game.

“Murphy goes up there in certain situations and he’s gonna get a base hit,” said Mets manager Terry Collins. “He’s determined and he’s gonna put good swings on it.”

Paul Janish responded with a one-out double in the home half and Stubbs followed a Ryan Hanigan groundout with a single up the middle to plate Janish and drive Dickey from the game.

“Truthfully, with the knuckleball I had tonight, I should’ve done better,” said Dickey. “I should’ve closed the seventh and pitched into the eighth.”

Pedro Beato spelled Dickey and issued a four-pitch walk to Cairo before giving way to Tim Byrdak, who put down Bruce with three straight sliders.

The bottom of the ninth began in ominous fashion for the Mets.

Janish slapped a slow grounder up the first base line, which Murphy initially overran before falling backwards to make the stop. Seeing Murphy struggling to make the play, Isringhausen took off in a sprint to cover. Murphy stumbled as he attempted to get to his feet, then lunged, his glove hand meeting the bag and Isringhausen’s arriving feet moments before Janish. The play ended with Isringhausen’s back-flop onto the dirt.

Hanigan then hit a playable grounder to third, but Wright was unable to reel it in. Isringhausen got Stubbs swinging before a Cairo single and a Bruce walk loaded the bases.

(Sports Network) - A pair of potential .500 teams - each 50-51 through 101 games - get their first chances to return to even tonight when the New York Mets visit the Cincinnati Reds to open a four-game series at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds climbed within a game of .500 on Sunday at home, as Drew Stubbs led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a homer off Scott Linebrink to beat the Atlanta Braves, 4-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Meanwhile, the Mets fell from .500 on Sunday in Miami, as Logan Morrison clubbed a game-tying home run and John Buck delivered a two-out, RBI double in the eighth inning to give the Florida Marlins a 5-4 win in the rubber match of a three-game series at Sun Life Stadium.

Cincinnati's middling record has kept it in the thick of the race in the National League's Central, where the Reds are three games behind a three-way tie for first place involving St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee.

The forecast is a bit different for New York in the NL East, when a one- below-.500 record leaves the Mets 14 1/2 games behind the front-running Philadelphia Phillies and 8 1/2 in back of the early wild card leaders in Atlanta.

Second-year right-hander Mike Leake gets the call for the Reds on the mound and aims for his first win since July 3.

The Arizona State product improved to 8-4 on the season with a 7-5 interleague defeat of the Cleveland Indians that day, but has since gone 0-1 in a pair of starts.

He pitched well in a tough-luck loss at Pittsburgh on July 19, allowing just a run on two hits in six innings of a 1-0 Pirates win.

In his last 10 starts, the 23-year-old has pitched six innings nine times and allowed three earned runs or less seven times.

He got a no-decision in his lone career start against the Mets.

New York replies with 36-year-old knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who'll face the Reds for the first time in his 193rd big-league appearance.

The University of Tennessee product hasn't won in four tries since June 28, when he went seven innings in the Mets' 14-3 interleague rout of Detroit.

Dickey is 0-1 with three no-decisions since, allowing a combined 23 hits and 11 runs in 25 1/3 innings.

He's 3-2 in 10 road appearances in 2011 with a 3.19 earned run average.

The Reds took four of six from the Mets last year.
