You don’t need us to tell you how important Thierry Henry will be to the overall success of the New York Red Bulls this season.

But if you’ve doubted that fact, look no further then last night’s 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution; in which Henry netted the game winning goal.

There was an unlikely hero in the victory, starting keeper Greg Sutton saved a penalty in the 33rd minute, keeping the score tied at zeros. Sutton, who is only starting while Bouna Coundoul continues his national duties in the Gold Cup, was great for the Red Bulls all day.

But in the end, Henry proved his worth to any critics. The first New York goal, an own goal, was the result of Henry feeding a perfect pass into the middle that caused Revolution defender Ryan Cochrane to panic and accidentally knock the ball into his own net.

On Henry’s game winning goal, the French striker would again go toe-to-toe with Cochrane. In the 50th minute Henry would streak into the penalty box only to be defended by Cochrane. Henry then hit the breaks, slotted the ball onto his foot, and rifled a goal.

Once again, there were almost late heroics by the visiting team. Rajko Lekic scored right at the last, but was deemed offsides by the officials, preserving the 2-1 lead and the Red Bulls three points.

From SB Nation's The Bent Musket:

"The New England Revolution looked dangerous on offense and created plenty of chances, but in the end could not overcome an equally dangerous New York Red Bulls side in Harrison as they lost 2-1. A Ryan Cochrane own goal and some trademark trickery from Thierry Henry put the Red Bulls in the lead before Zak Boggs' first goal of the season nearly represented a Revolution comeback in the second half.

Boggs' goal represented the Revs first from open play since April 23rd, and for periods of this match they looked in-sync and dangerous. For both teams, though, it was more of the same problems as shaky defense nearly undid the Red Bulls while a horrible lack of finishing ability kept the Revs from getting a share of the spoils."

The Red Bulls victory is their first in seven matches, while the Revolution remain winless on the season. The Red Bulls next game will be at the Portland Timbers Sunday at 10 p.m.
