The 2011 season has thus far been a rough one for Nick Swisher, who is dragging around a .215 batting average. Wednesday, however, was a good day for the New York Yankees right fielder. Swisher hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Yankees their margin of victory in a 4-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics, allowing the Yankees to sweep a three-game series.

A.J. Burnett (6-3) gave up a two-run homer to Josh Willingham in the first inning, but was otherwise strong for New York. He allowed three hits, walked three and struck out five, and also pitched seven innings for the first time since May 11. The right-hander hadn't lasted more than 6 1/3 in any of his previous three starts.

Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with an RBI double for New York, which recorded its first three-game sweep of the season and has won a season-high four in a row overall.

When Swisher homered in the fourth inning he had twice been given the bunt sign by Yankee manager Joe Girardi, but Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez missed the strike zone both times. On the third pitch Swisher swung and ripped a ball into the left field seats for his fourth home run.

Much has been made of the stem cell surgery New York Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon successfully used to rejuvenate his damaged right arm and resuscitate his major league baseball career. The ground-breaking surgery is performed by only a few surgeons -- in fact, only five in the U.S. One of them, Dr. Damon Noto, appeared on WFAN Radio with Joe & Evan earlier this week to discuss the 'Bartolo Colon Surgery.'

Part of the interview appears below, courtesy of Sports Radio Interviews.

Explain how this surgery works? What exactly do you do to make these kind of repairs?

"Let’s talk about his [Bartolo Colon's] surgery in particular. He had something interesting where they took the fat from his body, actually extracted a small amount of fat. They took that fat…They spun it down to get what we call ‘stem cells’ and then they took those stem cells and they re-injected them back into his shoulder. They also took a little bit of his bone marrow, so they did a small procedure where they took a little bit of his blood and the bone marrow out from the bone and they spun it down and got stem cells and they injected that along with it into the shoulder, so basically they’re taking one part of the body, cells from one part of the body and putting it back into another. Those stem cells are what actually causes repair and regenerates the actual tissue in that area and they strengthen that area."

Is there any use of human growth hormone in this surgery? That’s obviously the thing that Major League Baseball cares about in all of this?

"Some of the procedures we are using growth hormone or even some people are using testosterone. For his [Bartolo Colon's] in particular from what I heard they did not use any enhancing agent. These procedures are very powerful on their own. They don’t actually need growth hormone or testosterone, but this is a very new science. We’re calling this ‘regenerative medicine.’ It’s a very new field. What we’re seeing now is that different doctors are experimenting with different techniques. One of them actually is using growth hormones to make it even more effective, but the research is still out on whether or not that is needed. In his case they didn’t use any from what I hear from Dr.Prieto, who I was in good fortune to train with for awhile and he performed the surgery. He did not use any banned substances such as growth hormone or testosterone. You can see the results he got with this procedure."

If this surgery is so successful with Bartolo Colon I would have to think more-and-more players are going to want to get this surgery done?

"Absolutely. You’ve just seen the tip of the iceberg here. This is really going to explode. In the next five years the field of regenerative medicine, using your own body cells to heal itself is going to explode. I mean athletes are really going to be demanding these types of things. Instead of major surgeries they’re going to want to use their own bodies ability to heal."

The doctors who performed Colon's surgery have already claimed that other pitchers are lining up for the procedure. If Major League Baseball ultimately determines that Colon's surgery was done without the use of any banned substances and signs off on its use I think we have reached a new era in treatment of baseball injuries, particularly to pitchers. As common place as the once radical 'Tommy John Surgery' is today, the 'Bartolo Colon Surgery' seems as if it could be the new frontier.

The calendar has turned to June. Let's look at how the New York Yankees did in May, and which players were up and down. The Yankees as a team had a mediocre 15-14 record in May. Let's take a closer look, 'Kudos & Wet Willies' style.

Kudos to ...

Mark Teixeira: The slugging first baseman hit 10 home runs and drove in 22 runs during the month. Teixeira, a slow starter throughout his career, already has 16 home runs.

Derek Jeter: Only .274 for the month, but he is pointed in the right direction. Drove in more runs than he did in May, hit for a higher average, and had a better slugging percentage and on-base percentage.

Brett Gardner: Rebounded from a .188 April to hit .301 in May. Gardner is still getting thrown out too often stealing bases (10-for-16 on the season), but he is hitting and defending.

Curtis Granderson: Ten home runs and 26 RBI in May. The Grandy Man can in 2011 as he is showing why the Yankees let Johnny Damon go and traded Austin Jackson to get him.

Bartolo Colon: Finished the month with his first complete game and shutout since 2006. Has been a revelation.

Ivan Nova: A 3-1 record with a 3.90 ERA in six May starts. Not bad, even if there were a couple of shaky outings in there.

Joba Chamberlain: A 2.08 ERA over 12 relief appearances.

David Robertson: May have surpassed Chamberlain in importance to the bullpen. A 0.75 ERA over 13 games. Amazingly, Robertson has consistently been throwing the ball 84-95 mph, something he has never done in the past.

Luis Ayala: A 0.82 ERA over nine games, a total of 11 innings. It was a stunner when this guy made the roster, but he is making the most of his chance.

Hector Noesi: The rookie right-hander has pitched 9.1 innings over three major-league appearances and has surrendered just one run, a 0.96 ERA. Not a bad way to break into the big leagues.

Lance Pendleton: Pitched in four games and did not allow a run. Has now made seven appearances this season without allowing a run. The rookie reliever must think the big leagues are easy.

Wet Willies to ...

Russell Martin: After a torrid first month, the Yankee catcher hit just .200 in May with three home runs and seven RBI. Of course, manager Joe Girardi has to take some of the blame since he barely gave Martin any time off while normal backup catcher Francisco Cervelli was on the disabled list.

Nick Swisher: A .200 batting average with just two home runs and eight RBI for the month. He is hitting only .213 for the season, and it's time to worry about him.

Jorge Posada: A .219 batting average in May with no home runs and four RBI, one well-publicized and entirely unprofessional egotistical fit and a dwindling role on the Yankee roster. You have to begin to wonder if Posada makes it to the end of the season as a Yankee.

(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees have catapulted their way to the top of the American League East Division and look to stay there when they shoot for a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics today at the Coliseum.

The Yankees are hoping streaky right-hander A.J. Burnett can pull another solid outing from his sleeve when he takes the mound today. Burnett is 1-0 in his last two starts since going 0-2 in three trips to the hill, and last pitched in Friday's 4-3 loss at Seattle. He allowed two runs in five innings with six K's and a season high-tying five walks for a no-decision.

Burnett, who went 1-2 with a 4.06 ERA in May, is 5-3 with a 3.99 ERA in 11 starts this season. He is still searching for his first road win of the season as evidenced by his 0-2 mark in four games outside of the Bronx. He has faced the A's nine times -- all starts -- in his career and is 4-3 with a 3.88 ERA.

Oakland will try to salvage the finale of this set after winning four in a row before the Yankees invaded the Coliseum.

For the second straight night the New York Yankees home run happy offense was too much for the Oakland Athletics stingy pitching staff. The Yankees hit two home runs and banged out 12 base hits Tuesday en route to a lopsided 10-3 victory over the Athletics.

Curtis Granderson hit a two-run home run as part of a three-hit, four-RBI game, Derek Jeter had two hits and scored three times, Alex Rodriguez finished with three hits and three RBI and Robinson Cano clubbed a two-run homer. Freddy Garcia (4-4) was the benefactor of all of that offensen, giving up three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks over seven innings for the Yankees, who have won three straight.

"We have a good lineup," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "We have a deep lineup and we have patient hitters that know how to work the count and foul pitches off. When guys make some mistakes, they get to them."

Brett Anderson (3-5) had by far his worst outing of the season for Oaklandn, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings.

The Yankees (30-23) are now a game ahead of Boston and 1.5 games ahead of Tampa Bay in the American League East.

Three New York Yankees, led by Alex Rodriguez, are the most overrated players in baseball according to a Sports Illustrated poll of major league players. Rodriguez got 18 percent of the vote, followed by Joba Chamberlain with 12 percent and Derek Jeter with seven percent.

Rounding out the top five were Washington outfielder Jayson Werth and Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, who each got four percent of the vote. SI said 185 players voted.

The question was also posed on SI's Facebook page, and 45 percent of the fans who voted there said Jeter is the game's most overrated player. Boston's David Ortiz got 17 percent of the fan vote on Facebook, and A-Rod got 15 percent.

The full poll will in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated, which will be on newsstands Wednesday.

Is anyone surprised by this? I know I'm not. I guess the 3,000-hit mark Jeter is about to reach doesn't mean much to the players. Same with the 600+ home runs on Rodriguez's resume. As for Chamberlain, who thinks of him as more than a middle reliever/setup guy these days? No one is overrating him, except maybe jealous players tired of the attention paid to the Yankees.

Seems like nobody likes the new version of Yankee Stadium. For that matter, people are pretty ambivalent about City Field, home of the New York Mets, too. At least, according to 'research' done by Nate Silver of the New York Times.

Silver did not exactly do an exhaustive study. Rather, he went to the review site Yelp.com and figured out how reviewers on that popular site ranked baseball stadium. Citi Field came in 15th, while Yankee Stadium came in 21st of the 32 major-league ballparks.

The best, according to the reviewers? Pittsburgh's PNC Park, followed by Boston Fenway Park and At&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants.

No clue how Fenway got in there, unless the reviewers are just sentimental. It's old, crowded, insanely difficult to get in and out of and generally not comfortable.

As for the New York stadiums, I am not really qualified to say much about Citi Field -- I have not been there yet. It looks gorgeous on television, but the Mets did make Detroit's Comerica Park mistake. That is, they built a cavernous outfield that is simply way, way too spacious.

Yankee Stadium is a great place, much more modern and convenient than its predecessor across the street. Yet, despite the creature comforts I am a little disappointed by the place. I have been there a few times, and it just doesn't have the personality of the old place. It's pretty much a sterile building. Fans are much farther away, and with all the empty seats for the rich folks unoccupied close to the field it is much quieter than the old Stadium. Monument Park is an atrocity that can't be seen by most of the ballpark, and designers did an abominable job figuring out an entrance and exit to the park. The only way in finds a line of people pretty much blocking a main walkway. The restaurant in center field, which blocks seating on both sides, is also a joke. Unbelievable that is this age of technology designers could not build a restaurant that did not obstruct views.

Anyway, there you have it. Not much love for New York's baseball palaces.
