The Giants did well to acquire Beltran for their playoff push, but the Mets may have done even better, acquiring a top prospect for a rental when many thought their asking price was too high.

Make no mistake about it: New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson did a masterful job throughout the Carlos Beltran trade discussions. And fittingly, he culminated it all -- despite the doubters -- by frisking away a team's legitimate top prospect.

Sending Beltran to the San Francisco Giants for an arm with game-changing ability in Zack Wheeler is an enormous win for the Mets and it shows that the GM wants nothing but to shoot for the stars with young prospects. But maybe that's what we should have expected when the Mets took high school outfielder (who played in Wyoming) Brandon Nimmo in the first round of the MLB Draft, right?

What Alderson showed throughout these negotiations was not only his ability to play the market to his advantage, but also recognize top-end talent he's intrigued by, and hone in on it. Names like Domonic Brown, Jarred Cosart, Mike Minor, Gary Brown and Wheeler circulated early on when it became clear the Mets were ready to move their right fielder. But the skeptics popped up, rival GMs and scouts laughed. Beltran, after all, is a rental in every sense of the word. Beltran had a clause in his contract that he would not face arbitration, thus no team would be able to receive draft picks if they couldn't sign him in the offseason. While he was playing at an All-Star level, he is also a 34-year-old playing on a fragile knee. And, oh yeah, he had to say yes to any trade agreed upon. Who would just give away a promising young player for 60 games (and hopefully more) of Beltran, those skeptics thought.

Yet Alderson never budged. He knew that Beltran was the best bat on the market. A difference maker for a playoff team. And he waited until somebody came along and acceded to his request.

"We were looking for big upside," the GM said. "We could have gotten a package of three players from a number of clubs."

Rumors even circulated that after the Rangers offered their package, Alderson went back to the Giants and demanded Wheeler if they wanted to get a deal done. He knew the desperation from San Francisco's side ... its pitching is stellar, but its hitting left a lot to be desired, especially without Buster Posey in its lineup. It appeared, at least, that the Giants were one bat away from being National League frontrunners. (And this is not to say that that the Giants did a bad job in this trade. Beltran is a huge addition.)

Wheeler may never amount to anything -- nothing is for certain in baseball. But, he's just 21 years old. He throws in the mid-to-upper 90s and has an advanced curve ball. His fastball breaking ball combination is "top notch," according to ESPN's Keith Law. His offspeed pitch is below average, making him vulnerable to left-handed hitters. And his command need work. But he's young. And it's not like he wasn't holding his own in a hitters' league as it is: 3.99 ERA in 88 innings, with 74 hits allowed, 47 walks and 98 strikeouts in the high-A California League.

The fact of the matter is, despite the innate risks with prospects (and pitchers), the Mets added an arm with a very high ceiling. And they control him for the next six years, at a very reasonable price. They would have gotten nothing in return if they kept Beltran.

Instead, they get a potential frontline starter to pair -- in a perfect world -- with Matt Harvey in a few years. Plus, they get to take a long look at 25-year-old Lucas Duda in right field, and they get to see whether he has the makings to be a part of their future.

That six-letter word has rarely been typed or spoken about in relation to this organization in quite some time. That foresight alone makes this trade that much better for the New York Mets.

After talking with the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers among other team, the New York Mets have traded All Star OF Carlos Beltran to the defending World Champion San Francisco Giants. In return the Mets will receive highly touted pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.

Beltran and agent Scott Boras have 24 hours to approve the trade, something that is seen as a formality.

General Manager Sandy Alderson had reportedly broken off talks with the Giants last week when they refused to include Wheeler in the deal. As other teams started to make a strong push for Beltran, San Francisco GM Brian Sabean increased his offer to include the 21-year-old right hander.

The Mets will also send cash to the Giants to help cover the Beltran's contract for the rest of the season.

If you'll remember, two weeks ago San Francisco closer Brian Wilson said that the Giants were in talks to acquire Beltran, before saying he simply "heard a rumor". Clearly the bearded one was onto something.

Lucas Duda is expected to get most of the playing time in right field with Beltran off to California.

The MLB trade deadline is quickly approaching and the New York Mets have still yet to find a new home for OF Carlos Beltran. With so many teams in contention and so few impact bats available, there has been no shortage of suitors for the All-Star.

After much jostling, reports are surfacing that the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants have moved ahead of the Atlanta Braves and other teams in the pursuit of Beltran.

While Beltran has a full no trade clause in his contract and has stated he would like to stay in the NL and play the outfield, his agent, Scott Boras, made it clear this week that it's not an open and shut issue.

"This decision for Carlos is about the select group of teams where he feels he has a great chance to win," Boras said. "That's what this thing is about."

And as far as the Mets are concerned, this "thing" is about getting the bets prospect(s) possible. If that means sending him to the Braves or Philadelphia Phillies, then so be it. Beltran will be a rental for whoever picks up and having to see him do damage within the division for a few months is a small price to pay for an elite prospect.

For complete Mets news and analysis, check out SB Nation's Amazin' Avenue.

We're going to beat the Christmas rush and just assume that Carlos Beltran will be traded in the next few days, and do what news organizations do: Write a person of renown's obituary before he actually dies as to have it at the ready when the unfortunate deed takes place. So what follows may sound like a eulogy, but Beltran is, of course, alive and well. He just in all probability won't be playing for the New York Mets anymore. So in some ways, to Met fans, he will have died. They'll mourn his departure (though a few may not), and look longingly back on his body of work in Queens. But if he somehow ends up staying, well, we get to watch him play and produce for two more months.

When the Met outfielder came aboard for the 2005 season, he, along with Pedro Martinez, ushered in, to use Beltran's own words, "the New Mets." The outfielder's six-plus years with the Amazin's were a rocky road, with peaks and valleys, and the Mets weren't so "new" in that time as much as they were "the same old Mets" (to steal a phrase from their football brethren), meaning: They had some success (2006), but also crashed and burned with controversies and a few embarrassing moments along the way. The Mets have had a checkered, colorful 50-year history, and the Carlos Beltran Era was just as checkered and colorful.

The image of Beltran taking a called third strike to end the 2006 NLCS will forever be etched in the minds of Met fans (though most have forgotten that he had an OPS of 1.054, with three home runs, four RBIs and eight runs scored in that series). And he has unfairly been labeled "soft" by a segment of diehards, partly due to his seemingly random use of percentages to evaluate how banged up he was when asked if he would be in the lineup the next day ("I'm around 83 percent healthy, when I reach 89 percent I'll play") instead of stoically nodding his head and playing. After his horrific collision with Mike Cameron, Beltran played with a broken face. That should have silenced any "soft" talk right then and there. But Beltran had many more positive moments in his time with the Mets than negative, and he's right up there with the greatest position players in franchise history: Darryl Strawberry, Mike Piazza, Keith Hernandez, Edgardo Alfonzo, Howard Johnson, Cleon Jones, John Olerud, Gary Carter, Jose Reyes and David Wright. And with all due respect to Mookie Wilson, Lenny Dykstra and Tommie Agee (and let's not forget Lance Johnson, Lee Mazzilli or Del Unser), Beltran is the greatest center fielder the team has ever had.

His 2006 season was one of the greatest single seasons ever recorded by a Met. He set the franchise record for runs scored (127) and tied Todd Hundley's home run mark (41) and Howard Johnson's extra-base-hit record (80), drove in 116 runs (sixth best in Met history), slugged .594 (ranked fourth best), had an OPS of .982 (fifth best), hit 40 doubles (seventh best), walked 95 times (sixth best) and had a WAR of 8.0, which stands as the third best mark in club history, only behind Bernard Gilkey's 8.1 in 1996 and John Olerud's 8.1 in 1998.

Beltran didn't play for the Mets long enough to stand atop any all-time offensive categories (with Ed Kranepool topping many lists, longevity counts a little more than quality when perusing the team's record book), but he's near the top in many: He's second in WAR (32), tied for third in Defensive WAR (4.2), sixth in OBP (.369), sixth in slugging (.500), fifth in OPS (.869), sixth in Adjusted OPS+ (128), eighth in runs scored (548), sixth in doubles (208), sixth in home runs (149) and sixth in RBIs (558). He had three consecutive seasons of 100-plus RBIs for the Mets, scored over 100 runs twice and slugged .500 or better five times (including this season). And let's not forget his fielding, which was Gold Glove caliber (he won three, in 2006, '07 and '08), not to mention making one of the most extraordinary regular-season catches in team history, with his over-the-shoulder grab in the bottom of the 14th inning while running up Tal's Hill in Houston to save a game back in 2007.

Carlos Beltran was quiet, smooth and graceful, which rubbed some fans the wrong way, as it may have seemed like he wasn't giving full effort. He didn't possess the manic, dirtied uniform persona of a Wally Backman, the intense competitiveness of a Hernandez, the fun-loving joie de vivre of a Tug McGraw or the people's choice charisma of a Rusty Staub, but he was a professional through and through, with many spectacular, clutch moments. And with his team often caught up in a circus-like atmosphere, Beltran himself avoided scandals, pettiness, selfishness and controversy along the way. He wasn't a rah-rah type of teammate, but his leadership grew with every passing season, as he mentored one young player after another. He may have had a few miscues here and a few misunderstandings there, and his $100-plus million contract never led to a World Series, but now that his Met career is most likely coming to an end, there's no doubt that Carlos Beltran is one of the greatest players in franchise history.

New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes was going to be the most sought after trade chip in the 2011 trading season. However, his stellar play has made general manager Sandy Alderson change his mind, probably because he's seen first-hand how much of a game changer Reyes is, and that it'd be a public relations nightmare to trade him now. Thus, despite the shaky financial situation hovering over this team, it appears that the Mets will at least make an effort this offseason to keep him in New York.

WFAN's Mike Francesa shed some light on what Reyes might accept from the Mets. (Hat tip to Metsblog for posting and SNY's Peter Wade for jotting down the quote):

"Someone who knows the [Jose Reyes] group well said to me, ‘If the Mets offered him 6 years, $120 million. I think he'd take it.' If that's the case, the Mets might be able to do that deal. That might be something they might be able to do. And they said to me, ‘I really believe Reyes and his connections want to stay in NY. As long as they get a reasonable contract.' I said, ‘What's reasonable?' They said, ‘How about 6 years/120.'"

Considering rumors swirled early this season that Reyes would command at least a contract int he neighborhood of what Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford got -- seven years, $142 million -- this would appear to be a bargain.

I have no idea what Reyes will get in free agency, but I do think that would be a very solid offer from the Mets' view considering it looked like they'd have to let him walk early on in the year. The big sticking point will be the amount of years Alderson offers to a player who's had a number of leg injuries throughout his career. For what it's worth, Fangraphs' contract estimator, based on a player's WARP, says Reyes is worth $25 million this season. And the Mets still have 60 games to play.

Alderson will have his work cut out for him this offseason, between figuring out how many years to offer and how many dollars ownership (and he) are willing to to commit to one player. What would you offer -- year/dollar amount -- for the 28-year-old star shortstop?

Over the past week, Carlos Beltran trade rumors have run rampant. Even with the news surfacing that Beltran wants to be dealt to a National League team, and that the Tampa Bay Rays are now dangling some competition -- B.J. Upton -- in the Beltran sweepstakes (where some believe he won't be the "best" hitter available), the New York Mets and Sandy Alderson are still in the driver's seat as the July 31 deadline approaches.

While word has leaked over the past few days that other interested teams believe the Mets' asking price is a bit too expensive, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick wrote tonight on twitter that they do not think it is.

No sign of #Mets dropping price on Beltran. They think he's best guy on the market and "legitimate difference maker,'' says one source.

Do you blame the Mets in thinking that Beltran is a "difference maker"? He's shown he still has thunder in his bat and has done it in the playoffs before. The Mets have no reasons to lower their asking price until the final minute before the deadline. They have nothing to lose; other teams who won't pay their price will be the ones who ultimately miss out.

And Newsday's Ken Davidoff reiterated what seems to be the consensus about Beltran and why teams won't give the Mets a frontline prospect:

"We like Beltran. But we like him for what he is, which is a rental for eight weeks with no draft pick compensation and a long injury history."

Davidoff notes that this may mean that Alderson may have to target quantity over quantity; get a few lower level guys whom their scouts like and hope they turn into something as opposed to that elite minor league talent.

It remains to be seen what Alderson and his staff will do, but be if there's one thing that's certain: he's doing all he can to get the best possible return.

Earlier in the day it was reported that it appeared that the Carlos Beltrans sweepstakes was down to five teams: the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers.

Just a few hours later, ESPN's Jason Stark penned a column about what it means to really be "available" during the trading deadline, and he had a very interesting Beltran theory bulletted at the bottom of the story.

It's been reported before that the Giants are very much in play for the right fielder, but that they don't plan on offering up any of their prospects, and instead are willing to eat most of (or all of) the money owed to him for the remainder of this year.

Here's a fascinating theory on the Carlos Beltran sweepstakes from two NL executives: They believe that all the current talk that the Phillies and Red Sox are either the "favorites" or the "most aggressive" teams in the Beltran bidding is being circulated by the Mets to increase pressure on other teams in the bidding. Their theory: The Giants wind up swooping in and getting this done, for a package fronted by dynamic center-field prospect Gary Brown.

Brown is a 22-year-old center fielder drafted 24th overall in the 2010 draft from Cal State Fullerton. Currently, Brown has a .313/.384/.468 line in High-A -- with eight home runs, 57 RBI and 39 stolen bases. Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein says he has "easy 80 speed" and "could turn into a dynamic leadoff man and plus-plus center fielder."

ESPN's Keith Law did not rank him among his top 50 prospects at midseason, though Goldstein slotted him at No. 46, saying: "Looking like the Giants center fielder and leadoff man of the future, which could come as early as mid-2012. Continued improvement in his approach will be key."

Brown may not be the best prospect in the Giants' system, but is one of the better ones. This would be a good get for the Mets, but of course, all this trade talk is speculation at this point.

Names being thrown around that would come to the Mets in a deal range from Atlanta minor league pitcher Mike Minor to Phillies right fielder Dominic Brown. The Giants, though, would rather pay most or all of the $6 million owed to Beltran than give up top prospects. Sandy Alderson has said a few times that dealing within his own division would not be a road block to a deal.
