New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum refused to address Randy Moss to the Jets rumors on Thursday during an appearance on ESPN 101 in St.Louis with Zach and the Coach (Rick Venturi).

"Obviously I can’t address any specific rumor. Again our goal is to try to keep as many players together. We’re fortunate. We have a great owner in Mr.Johnson and a great partner with Rex Ryan. The three of us kick around scenarios all the time and always come out and let’s make the best decision for the Jets. We’ll see who we are able to keep when there is a new agreement down the road in terms of who we will have rights to and who we won’t and then we’ll go from there and try to make the best decisions."

In a Wednesday interview with the NFL Network, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez expressed confidence in General Manager Mike Tannenbaum's ability to bring Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, and Brad Smith back next year --

"I think that’s what Mike Tannenbaum does best and he’s the best GM in football. Mr. [Woody] Johnson, that’s part of his job. And Rex, that’s keeping all of us together. He wants the offense to run smooth, he wants us to pick up where we left off and to do that, we need all of our guys back. I think that would be the best-case scenario."

It is nice to hear such confidence from Sanchez, but it would be just about a miracle if Tannenbaum could somehow find a way to get all three back. Considering the Jets just drafted two wide receivers and apparently do have a legitimate interest in Randy Moss, it sounds like the organization is prepared for the reality of one or two of them leaving.

Also in the interview, Sanchez revealed the Jets are planning to have a full team "lockout camp" this June. It is good to hear to the entire team will be together and that Sanchez is taking the lead to make sure it happens. We are going to need some type of news in June that isn't related to court hearings.

Jason La Canfora is reporting it is "long shot" the New York Jets will pursue free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. This isn't surprising considering how high his price tag will likely be and how many other free agency concerns they have.

The Jets have a way of automatically being linked with every big name available but it would be foolish to invest so much money in one position, especially when they get Antonio Cromartie back for less money. In La Canfora's report, it is mentioned that Asomugha is more likely to end up with a NFC East team. I am sure the Redskins will be ready to dump a truckload of money at his doorstep and there has been some rumors around Philadelphia that the Eagles could pursue him as well.

If the Jets can't get Cromartie back, look for them to pursue a cheaper option than Asomugha like Ike Taylor or Jonathan Joseph.

NFL fans want the lockout to be resolved for a myriad reasons, but one of the primary ones is we’re all anxious to know where key free agents will be playing in 2011, and subsequently, what rosters will look like. No team may be faced with more tough choices in free agency when the lockout finally ends than the New York Jets. At the wide receiver position, the Jets must decide whether to re-sign Braylon Edwards or Santonio Holmes or both. There are mixed opinions amongst Jets fans about what the prudent decision would be over the long haul, but it’s fair to say that the vast majority hope both are back provided the Jets wouldn’t have to break the bank to do so.

Holmes granted a lengthy and interesting interview recently with ProFootballFocus, a stats-centric website that has published some interesting studies of late. The interviewer wisely avoided bugging Holmes about the lockout or his uncertain future as a free agent during the labor impasse.

The interview topics included Holmes’ charity work, his statistical output in 2010 from various formations, playing with two young quarterbacks — Ben Roethlisberger and Mark Sanchez — to begin his career, playing for Rex Ryan and what areas of his game he feels need improving. Holmes was also asked about his workout schedule during the lockout. Here’s what he had to say:

Steve Wyremski (SW): How’s the offseason going so far? What have you been up to?

Santonio Holmes (SH): Mostly laying low. Training as usual throughout the mornings… every day five days a week. [I’ve been] spending some time with the family. Just sitting back and resting, man. Waiting to see what’s going to happen with the season.

SW: Your workout schedule right now. Take me through a typical day.

SH: I arrive at workouts at about 8:30 in the morning. I go through normal lift days [and] depending on what day it is… upper body or lower body. The workout is about an hour / hour and a half in the weight room. We leave the weight room and go out to the football field and do football specifics whether we’re cutting, doing agilities, running through cones, doing bungee cords, working on the track, speed work, going through the sand pit, [and] jogging 2-3 miles a day. That’s pretty much it.

SW: I saw you’re out training with a bunch of other guys – Chris Johnson, William Gay – you guys all training out there together?

SH: Yeah, we’ve been training together for the past three years. I’ve been in the league six years now, so I’ve been there the past six years. It’s myself, Ike Taylor, James Farrior, just to name a few guys I’ve been training with.

I encourage you to check out the rest of the interview. Plenty of good stuff in there while we patiently wait for news on the lockout front.

Wide receiver Braylon Edwards can be a free agent. Edwards, though, seems to be pining to remain with the New York Jets -- largely because he wants to stay with quarterback Mark Sanchez.

"We kind of established that we really actually care for each other," Edwards told the Newark Star-Ledger. "I was talking to Mark, trying to get some insight. You're the golden goose, have you talked anybody? What's your feeling? What's your gut instinct?

"He gave me what he could, saying he really wanted me back; he wanted me to keep working with him, because even if I didn't come back, he wanted to see me be the best. Mark's younger than I am, so for him to say that just really showed me the person that he is, and the relationship that I believe we're beginning, or that we have."

Right now, there is no telling how the Jets' wide receiver situation plays out. Interesting words, however, from Edwards.

The latest rumors surrounding soon to be released from prison, wide receiver Plaxico Burress, is that the New York Jets aren't likely to pursue him, with the Philadelphia Eagles becoming the most recent front-runners.

Burress could be another short term option to replace Braylon Edwards or Santonio Holmes if either leaves in free agency. Although, similar to Randy Moss, Burress makes more sense as a replacement for Edwards considering his size and the type of game he plays. Edwards has recently expressed his desire to stay with the team, yet again, this time citing his growing closeness to quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Edwards has endeared himself to fans in the past year with his improved consistency on the field and outspoken desire to remain with the Jets. It remains to be seen if he can work out a contract, despite him mentioning the possibility of taking a hometown discount.

The Daily News is reporting today that the New York Jets have a genuine interest in pursuing free agent wide receiver Randy Moss, in the likely occurrence of them not being able to re-sign both Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes. Rex Ryan has never been shy about admitting his fondness for Moss and apparently he still believes he has the ability to stretch a defense. The reasoning behind his thinking is likely derived from watching Moss beat both Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie deep for touchdowns this past season.

Moss makes more sense as a replacement for Edwards than Holmes, considering his size and that he would fit better at split end (where Edwards takes the majority of reps) than he would in the slot. Moss isn't as physical as Edwards and is coming off a much worse season. Yet, he could provide a viable short-term replacement, especially if he comes on an affordable contract and is motivated properly to prove that he isn't finished yet.

Despite their free agency issues on the defensive side of the ball, most notably in the secondary. Most of the attention on the Jets free agency will be linked to how they handle their two big name receivers. Depending on how the new Collective Bargaining Agreement is worked out, Holmes could be a restricted free agent. Yet, he has already gone on record saying he wants a long term contract and would not play under a tender...

If this lockout ever ends, it will be interesting to see how the Jets handle their own big names, in conjunction with pursuing new additions.
