Well, the winning streak couldn't last forever, but who would've thought in the midst of an offense who was getting contributions from all over in recent nights that the New York Mets would make Livan Hernandez look like an ace? On Thursday night, Hernandez changed speeds, kept Mets hitters off balance and lead the Washington Nationals to a 4-3 victory on the heels of his eight-inning three-run (two earned) outing. New York would try to come back for the second night in a row, but a two-out single proved all they could muster in the ninth.

Chris Capuano was on the hill for the Mets tonight and he was hit around pretty well in his 5 2/3 innings pitched. He gave up 10 hits, but was really lucky to only give up four earned runs on the night. Credit him for sticking with it, though, and giving the Mets a decent start altogether.

Jason Werth began the game's scoring with a ground rule double to right field to drive in one in the third inning, but the Mets managed to tie it up at the top of the fourth inning when David Wright grounded to first base, driving home Jose Reyes. After the Nats went ahead in the bottom of the fourth, 3-1, the Mets began the top of the fifth with two straight singles. After Willie Harris fouled out, Capuano bunted but was safe at first on an error by Ivan Rodriguez and the bases were loaded. Reyes hit a sac fly, but Daniel Murphy struck out looking to put an end to a possible Mets' rally. Murphy went 0-for-4 on the night in the two-hole.

Ian Desmond homered in the fifth inning -- and the Mets attempted to put another rally together in the sixth inning after Ike Davis doubled to right field to score Carlos Beltran, to make the score 4-3, but Thole couldn't get the base hit to tie the game. Drew Storen came in for the save, allowed a single to Thole, but struck out Willie Harris, with Chin-Lung Hu (who ran for Thole) on second base.

The Mets' winning streak ends at six games, but will look to start another one tomorrow night as they travel to Philadelphia to face the Phillies.

The New York Mets are looking to extend their winning streak to seven games -- a stretch that they haven't been a part of since the middle of June last season. If they can get a win tonight against the Washington Nationals they would have swept two straight series and also would be the first time they took a full set as the visiting team since the June 15-18 series against the Cleveland Indians last year. Their current six-game surge has given them a record of 11-13 and put them a half game above the Nationals for fourth place.

Lately, the Mets have been getting wins every way possible -- outslugging teams, pitching well and rallying late in games, like last night. The Amazin's are undefeated -- 6-0 -- since Jason Bay returned to the lineup, while Ike Davis is on a nine-game hitting streak as well. Even when Daniel Murphy doesn't start, he's still making his presence felt as last night's pinch-hit homerun, then late-inning two-run double showed. He may not be a great defender but his bat is certainly a plus at second base. If we know one thing from Murphy, he'll continue to put in the time to get better with the glove.

Chris Capuano will take on Livan Hernandez tonight. Capuano (2-1) has a 5.95 ERA but is coming off his best start of the year, a seven-inning, one-run, four-strikeout performance against the Astros. Hernandez is 2-2 on the year with a 3.48 ERA and is coming off his worst start of the year when he allowed four earned runs (seven altogether) on nine hits against the Pirates. Hernandez is very hittable and will need to change speeds to be effective. The Mets' bats could have another solid game in this one.

The New York Mets continue to find ways to get the job done. Wednesday night, with the bats really unable to generate anything for three-quarters of the game, the Amazin's used some late-inning heroics to get the job done on the road -- a 6-3 victory against the Washington Nationals -- that started with a Daniel Murphy pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning and ended with a ninth-inning rally, capped off by his two-run double.

Sitting in favor of Justin Turner because the Mets were facing a lefty in Tom Gorzelanny, Terry Collins made the move to bring up Murphy with two outs in the eighth inning against right-handed reliever Tyler Clippard with the Mets down 2-1. Murphy promptly launched a home run to right field to knot the game at two apiece. The Mets had jumped out to a lead in the third inning with a Justin Turner single, but two consecutive one-run innings for the Nationals in the fourth and fifth inning put the home team ahead -- until Murphy's blast tied it up.

Pedro Beato came out for the eighth inning looking to keep the score tied, but gave up a quick double to Adam LaRoche. Josh Thole then allowed a Beato pitch to get by him and Wilson Ramos stepped up with a man on third. He lifted a ball to centerfield to bring home the potential winning run -- and after Beato retired the next two batters, the Mets would go to the ninth inning trailing by one.

Nats' manager Jim Riggelman made the odd decision to use Sean Burnett in the ninth inning, despite him not pitching well lately and the Nats' future stopper Drew Storen closing out the past three save chances. It was a managerial move Riggelman would ultimately regret as Burnett allowed four hits and four earned runs, while only getting two outs. Jason Bay reached on an infield single, then Ike Davis followed with a clean single to left field. Willie Harris was sent up to bunt and move the runner over, but instead reached first on the bunt to load the bases. Collins sent up Chin-Lung Hu to pinch hit for Beato and Hu hit a sac fly to right field -- and Thole grounded out next, but brought home a run to give the Mets the 4-3 advantage. Murphy put the icing on the cake, smacking a double to right field and scoring Harris and Jose Reyes (who had been intentionally walked). Francisco Rodriguez closed out the ninth, allowing just a double in his inning of work.

R.A. Dickey was solid on the mound tonight, tossing 6 2/3 innings, while allowing eight hits and two earned runs -- and keeping the Mets in striking distance.

Regardless of the way the Mets were able to pull his one out, it's a very encouraging sign to see them come back in the late innings and prolong their winning streak, which is now six games. Most of all, it's nice to see an assortment of guys chip in for the victory. New York will look to sweep their second straight series Thursday night.

The New York Mets will look to extend their season-long five-game winning streak on Wednesday night against the Washington Nationals. Yesterday, the Mets made a power pitcher pay when he left balls in the zone, then took advantage of a pitch that hung from his relief partner. Even better, in a shortened outing for Chris Young, the bullpen came in for 4 1/3 innings and slammed the door shut, allowing just four hits and one run. Lately, there hasn't been one method to the Mets' winning ways, which certainly is an encouraging sign.

Wednesday night knuckleballer R.A. Dickey will take the hill hoping to find some consistency in a season that's been up and down for him. While he sports a 4.10 ERA and 1.60 WHIP, he's 1-3 on the season and has given up zero runs, three runs, five runs and four runs in his four starts this year. He's given the Mets innings but his control has been a bit off at the start of this year. Against the Nats on April 8, he tossed his shortest outing of the year, five innings, and allowed three runs while walking five. New York is on a roll now, though, and Dickey will want to keep that going.

The Mets will face the Nationals' left-hander Tom Gorzelanny. The 28-year-old is 0-2 on the season and has a 4.96 ERA and a very low 1.16 WHIP. New York defeated him in his first start of the season, putting six runs (five earned) on the board in 5 1/3 innings, though they did strikeout eight times.

With a set against the Phillies looming this weekend, the Mets need to continue grabbing wins against weaker competition and keep the momentum rolling.

Losing streak, what losing streak? The New York Mets continued their winning ways on Tuesday night with a 6-4 victory over the Washington Nationals to kick off a three-game series in our nation's capital. Terry Collins' crew have now followed up a dreadful 2-12 stretch with five straight wins.

Chris Young was sharp in his first start since being activated from the disabled list both with his arm and his bat. In the second inning, Young surprised everyone -- including Nats first baseman Adam LaRoche and all of New York -- with a safety squeeze to score Ike Davis to put the Mets up 2-0.

Young, on a strict pitch count, left after just 4 2/3 innings but outside of two mammoth blasts from Washington catcher
Wilson Ramos, the tall righty didn't show any ill effects of the biceps tendonitis that kept him sidelined since April 10.

After Young, pitching in a 3-3 game, put the go-ahead run on third base, Ryota Igarashi came on to strike out Jayson Werth and end the threat.

Jason Bay and Davis chased Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann in the sixth with back-to-back singles, but it was the man calling the shots for the New York pitching staff that came up with the biggest play of the night for the Mets. Lefty Doug Slaten came in to face Josh Thole, who ripped the second pitch he saw for a double that put New York up 5-3.

Taylor Bucholz pitched a perfect two innings of relieve to continue his fantastic season and while Jason Isringhausen allowed one run while struggling through the eighth, Francisco Rodriguez closed the door in the ninth for his fifth save.

These two teams will go at it again on Wednesday night when R.A. Dickey faces Tom Gorzelanny at 7:05 PM.

The New York Mets continue their run of playing some of the league's weaker teams when they travel to Washington, DC tonight to take on the Nationals. The Mets have won four straight games and will look to continue their surge up the standings with a strong series against a division foe. Make no mistake about it, we need to see the Mets beat up on some of the top-tier teams before any grand proclamations are made, but in order for those games to mean something, they need to take advantage of an early favorable schedule.

Chris Young will make his return to the disabled list after suffering from biceps tendonitis. He hasn't pitched since the one-hitter he fired against the Nats at home on April 10. Dillon Gee will remain on the roster and while Young's rotation spot is not in jeopardy, the organization is showing that whoever produces will get to stake a claim in the success of this team. Ryan Zimmerman is still on the disabled list for the Nationals, making their lineup that much weaker.

The Mets will go to bat against Washington's most talented pitcher (currently), Jordan Zimmermann. Zimmermann threw against the Mets on April 8, earning his only win of the season in a 5 1/3-outing, while allowing two earned runs on six hits. The 24-year-old has a 3.70 ERA and 1.15 WHIP on the year.

With the Nats one win better than the Mets, this series presents a chance for the Mets to make their move out of last place and build on a very good homestand.
