Here is a look back at the significant numbers in Sunday’s 31-25 victory by the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV. Other than, of course, the final score.

Need proof that the NFL is a passing league more than ever? Super Bowl 45 set a record for fewest combined rushing attempts in the Super Bowl — 36. Green Bay had just 13 and Pittsburgh had 23. The 13 attempts by the Packers tied the record for fewest attempts by a winning team. That had been held by St. Louis (Super Bowl XXXIV).

Green Bay’s 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter tied the mark for largest lead after the end of one quarter (Miami, SB VIII and Oakland, SB XV).

The Packers have now won 13 championships, including four Super Bowls. That is the most of any franchise in NFL history.

Jordan Nelson caught nine passes for a Super Bowl record 140 yards, breaking the record Max McGee of the Packers. McGee had 138 yards receiving in Super Bowl I. Imagine what Nelson could have done without the three drops he also had.

Kickoff of Super Bowl 45 between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers is just about four hours away as I type this. The Packers, as they have been since the beginning, remain 2.5 – 3-point favorites to defeat the Steelers this afternoon.

By now you know that Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers is going for his third Super Bowl ring, and Aaron Rodgers, quarterback of the Packers, is looking for his first. Yeah, yeah, blah, blah. Let’s talk about some of the important stuff.

How about those Super Bowl commercials?
OK, New York sports fans who are you rooting for in today Super Bowl between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers? Are you rooting for anyone at all? Are you boycotting watching the game on the grounds that your team isn’t in it?

There are solid reasons for New York fans to root for, and against, each team.

Let’s take the Steelers first. If you are a New York Jets fan it is going to be difficult to be happy about watching the Steelers win their seventh Super Bowl title when you still think it should be your team playing today.

If you are a Giants fan you have the whole Ben Roethlisberger-Eli Manning dynamic. Every time Big Ben shows up on the big stage it reminds you of the 2004 trade then-Giants GM Ernie Accorsi engineered for Manning. What he could have done was simply take Roethlisberger with the fourth overall pick that year.

I think Giants fans will still be arguing about the wisdom of that move long after both guys are retired.

As for rooting for the Steelers you have to like the way they play. Bruising defense, a quality running game, a big-play passing attack.

Now, for the Packers. Mixed emotions as a Giants fan. You have to be bummed in a way because the Packers are the team that prevented the Giants from reaching the playoffs. Yet, at the same time, it would be comforting to know that you lost out to the Super Bowl champions.

As a Jets fan, maybe Aaron Rodgers is easier to root for than Roethlisberger.

Personally, I am rooting for the Packers today. I am tired of Big Ben, and I’m tired of watching the Steelers win so darn often. It’s somebody else’s turn.

How about you? Who are you rooting for today?

It has been a miserable week weather-wise in North Texas, site of Super Bowl XLV Sunday evening between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers. Conditions are not expected to improve a whole lot between now and game time. Below is a look at the Dallas forecast for Sunday. Not pretty.

We talked earlier about whether or not the difficulties in North Texas this week are a bad sign for the 2014 Super Bowl at New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey. No one in the Northeast wants to believe that will be the case. We all believe we know how to handle these conditions better than those in other parts of the country who are not accustomed to this type of bad weather. We have to hope that really is the case.

SB Nation's Joel Thorman is in Dallas and he has more on the weather and how it is impacting the scene around Cowboys Stadium this week.

Even with more snow possible for Sunday, the folks in Texas are getting a little tired of hearing about the weather.

Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey will not play in Super Bowl XLV against the Green Bay Packers. Defensive end Aaron Smith has also been ruled out.

Pouncey, who suffered a severe ankle injury in the AFC Championship game victory over the New York Jets, had hoped to practice today for the first time since the injury. Peter King, serving as pool reporter for the Professional Football Writers of America, said that Pouncey did not make an appearance on the field during practice.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin told King that Pouncey’s absence will not force the Steelers to change their game plan.

“Obviously he’s a quality player, and how it affects the game, no one knows,” Tomlin said. “But as far as what we do, we have a plan, and that won’t change.’”

Without Pouncey, undrafted center Doug Legursky from Marshall will make his first NFL start at center in the Super Bowl. Legursky filled in for Pouncey during the AFC Championship Game.

Legursky and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger did mishandle an exchange that caused a safety during the Steelers’ victory over the Jets. We will have to see how Pouncey’s absence impacts Sunday’s game.

Walt Anderson, a 15-year veteran with 13 games of playoff experience, has been named by the NFL as referee for Super Bowl XLV Sunday between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Anderson was line judge in Super Bowl XXXV between the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens. He has worked three conference championships, two divisional playoffs and seven wild card games.

The other members of the Super Bowl XLV officiating crew are Chad Brown (umpire), Kent Payne (head linesman), John Hussey (line judge), Doug Rosenbaum (field judge), Mike Weatherford (side judge) and Scott Helverson (back judge). The crew collectively has 77 years of NFL officiating experience and 53 combined playoff game assignments.

Under the NFL officiating program’s evaluation system, the highest-rated eligible officials at each position earn the right to work the Super Bowl. Super Bowl officials must have at least five years of NFL experience and previous playoff assignments.

Could there be a Super Bowl matchup involving two NFL teams with richer postseason histories than the Super Bowl XLV matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers? Unlikely.

Let’s look at some of the numbers surrounding Sunday’s meeting at Cowboys Stadium in North Texas.

- The Steelers have won six Super Bowl titles, more than any other NFL franchise.
- The Packers have won an NFL record 12 championships dating back prior to the Super Bowl era, and have won three Super Bowls.
- Green Bay is 28-16 in postseason play, an NFL-best .636 winning percentage. The Steelers, 33-19 (.635) are No. 2 in that category.
- The Steelers will be making their eighth Super Bowl appearance, tying them with the Dallas Cowboys for the most all time.

“We’re very similar organizations,” says Steelers chairman emeritus Dan Rooney. “We’re similar in the way we operate. We have great respect for the Packers and we always have.”

Here is one other number. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is looking for his third Super Bowl title. Roethlisberger, who is in his seventh year, is one of only three quarterbacks (Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman and Tom Brady) in NFL history to win at least 10 postseason games by the end of their seventh season.
