Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) – Robin Lehner recorded a win in his first NHL start with 20 saves as the Ottawa Senators satiated the need for a win in a 6-4 romp of the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

Milan Michalek, Zack Smith, Jesse Winchester and Chris Kelly each tallied a goal and an assist as the Senators halted a six-game losing streak where they scored just seven goals during the slide. Daniel Alfredsson and Nick Foligno also scored for the victors.

“All four lines contributed,” said Senators center Corey Locke. “Our defense was solid and Robin played great in the net. It was great to be a part of it.”

Milan Jurcina posted a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who continue to slip with three straight losses. Trevor Gillies, P.A. Parenteau and Blake Comeau each tallied in the loss.

Kevin Poulin started the game for New York, but after giving up two goals on eight shots, he was pulled in favor for Nathan Lawson, who then gave up four second period goals. Poulin came back in the third where he made 11 saves.

“I don’t think they played bad,” Parenteau said of the Isles’ goalie play. “There was a few bad bounces in the second period. I don’t think we played very well in front them.”

It took just 32 seconds for the Senators to get on the board after Mike Fisher picked off a pass just outside the offensive zone. He then rushed into the zone where he dropped the puck off to Alfredsson, who stuffed home a rebound off of his initial shot.

The Islanders knotted the game seven minutes later with Gillies’s first career goal. Zenon Konopka fed a crossing pass to the top of the crease where a charging Gillies knocked the puck into the net with his body — the goal was reviewed and upheld.

Winchester gave Ottawa the lead back, 2-1, at the 9:50 mark of the opening period. He picked up a loose disc near the left boards and brought it into the faceoff circle where he wristed a low shot past Poulin.

The 20-year-old New York netminder was pulled after the goal as Lawson came in before giving up four goals in the second stanza.

The Sens made it a 3-1 game on a short-handed goal from Michalek at the 7:13 mark of the second. The play was set up by Matt Carkner’s pass from the defensive zone to mid-ice where Kelly led a 2-on-1 rush. He then finished the charge by crossing it to Michalek, who chipped it past an outstretched Lawson.

The goals continued in bunches as the two teams traded scores just 20 seconds apart from each other.

The Islanders made it a one-goal game after Comeau picked up a rebound in the slot and slid toward the left faceoff circle before ripping a shot into the back of the net at the 10:31 mark.

But Ottawa negated the New York goal and some with three straight scores of its own. Kelly’s goal off a scorching wrister from the point started the rally just 20 seconds after Comeau’s goal.

The cushion grew for the Senators on Foligno’s sixth goal of the season and Smith made it a 6-2 rout with a backhander past Lawson with 5:33 left in the middle period.

The Islanders looked to spark a possible comeback just 1:49 into the final frame with Parenteau’s tip-in off of a Jurcina shot from the right point. Nine minutes later, Jurcina tallied an unassisted goal, but New York was unable to find the net the rest of the game.

Ottawa has won six of seven overall in the series…Lehner, 19, became the youngest goaltender ever to start a game in an Ottawa uniform…Carkner had two assists in the game…Neither teams scored on the power play. The Sens were 0-for-3, while the Isles were 0-for-2.
