In the wake of the trade that landed them Carmelo Anthony, New York Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni will be charged with putting his new squad together, and this won’t be easy for him. Meshing the talents of the high-scoring duo of Anthony and Amare Stoudemire will take time.

D’Antoni’s team is now run by a veteran point guard better suited to a half-court style in Chauncey Billips, while D’Antoni has always been a push the ball up the floor and get quick shots advocate.

So, there will be some blending of talents and philosophies that will need to take place. D’Antoni joined Boomer and Carton on WFAN in New York to talk about the changes. Sports Radio Interviews has the full transcript.

Here is part of the interview:

On getting the guys to play together:

"It’s a whole thing if players are able to give and take. We don’t want to take their egos away or their game and what made them successful, but they have to be able to blend it in with the other superstar per se or the other players. If they can do that successfully than we’re going to be a good team because the talent level obviously went up. Now can they play together and put their needs aside for the needs of the Knicks? They’re saying the right things. Now it will come down to doing it."

How important Chauncey Billups was in the deal:

"Well people do forget how instrumental he was, the MVP of the Finals, won two titles, and he went from Detroit to Denver when they were floundering and made them a really good team. He’s only 34, he has a great body, has at least three or four more great years in him, he should be able to play at the All-Star level, and he’s the guy that has to kinda understand what the team needs and how to get Carmelo and Amar’e the ball and be successful. I don’t think you can underplay how important he is and yet you can’t put it all on his shoulders. That’s a big, big pickup for us."

If they can come together quick enough to be dangerous:

"I think they have a good chance at it and I’m excited about doing it. There’s a level of talent here that we have never had so it does make it easier. Having said that we’re in sixth right now and we’re trying to hold onto that. Can we pass Atlanta who has been together for five years, Chicago who is playing well together, Boston, Orlando, and Miami, can you do that in this short time? We’ll see. I’d never say Amar’e and Carmelo can’t do something because they are strong-willed individuals where when push comes to shove they’re doing the shoving. And Chauncey is a proven winner so hold on and let’s see if we can do it. I do know that the Knicks franchise is better off today than it was yesterday and in the future, whether it’s next week or next year this team is going to be a lot better and we will raise some eyebrows around the league."

Good luck, Mike. You are going to need it because if this does not work the blame is likely to fall on you.

Carmelo Anthony and the other players the New York Knicks acquired in Monday's blockbuster trade with the Denver Nuggets are expected to be in uniform for the Knicks Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden when they take on the Milwaukee Bucks.

It will be the first chance for New York fans to glimpse 'Melo in Knicks' colors. The Knicks, of course, are betting that the acquisition of Anthony is the next step toward becoming a championship contender, not just a middle-of-the-pack team, which is what their 28-26 record says they are right now.

There has, of course, been plenty of reaction to the Anthony trade around the Inter-Google today. Here is a sampling.

From Benjamin Hochman, Nuggets beat writer for the Denver Post:

I think everyone involved in the trade was relieved. This became a soap opera, featuring an NBA All-Star, a Russian billionaire, a reality TV star and media from America’s largest market. I think it was fitting that Melo made an appearance on a national talk show ("Conan") the same night he was traded. Everything in this process was over the top.

From the New York Times:

The Knicks had to navigate a minefield of conflicting agendas, internal and external. They had to weigh Anthony’s competitive drive against his drive for financial security. They had to gauge the anxiety of the Denver Nuggets and the stubborn persistence of the Nets.

They ultimately paid a staggering price — four rotation players, all of them 26 or younger, three draft picks and $6 million in cash — to acquire Anthony and Chauncey Billups. But the Knicks nudged a little closer to contender status late Monday night, and that was all the justification they needed.

Anthony, one of the N.B.A.’s elite scorers, is joining Amar’e Stoudemire, one of game’s fiercest big men, on the league’s greatest stage. Any nagging details — a gutted roster, a fractured front office — were deemed secondary.

"We know that we want to win a championship," Coach Mike D’Antoni said Tuesday. "And the way to do it, you got to get some star players in here. And you can’t say, ‘Well, what if, what if.’ We could be here forever. And what-ifs never happen. But we know we have two of the best players in the league."

That is the point for the Knicks. They can rebuild whatever ancillary pieces they lost in getting Anthony. Finding the superstars that are necessary to build contending teams is the difficult part. The Knicks have now done that.

First of all, Carmelo Anthony is a Knick, and so is Amar'e Stoudemire. Those are two of the league's best scorers from inside and out, two All-Stars worthy of starting spots, and two guys who demand double teams. Any way you slice it, that's incredible. The whole "They both need to ball to score! They can't share!" thing may hold water for now, but they'll probably figure that out. They're really good and they're going to learn how to coexist. It'll take time, though.
- Seriously, though, don't try and approach the Melo/Amar'e tandem with any degree of certainty. The advanced stats tend to be frightening, but these two guys have never played alongside companions of one another's caliber. We have no idea how far those two can take us. None.

After months of speculating about of the future of Carmelo Anthony, we now know that he will be a member of the New York Knicks after the Nuggets agreed to trade their All Star to the Big Apple on Monday night.

Making the trip east with Anthony will be Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman. In return for the face of the franchise, the Nuggets will receive Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Timothy Mozgov, three draft picks and $3 million.

The Knicks will also send Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to the Timberwolves while Corey Brewer comes from Minnesota to New York.

Per the Denver Post, the draft picks going from the Knicks to the Nuggets will be New York's 2014 first rounder and Golden State's second-round selections in 2012 and 2013.

Now that owner James Dolan and the Knicks have their man, the focus squarely shines on the New Jersey Nets, who are still searching for their own star.

Rumors have been flying that Devin Harris -- a main part of New Jersey's package for Anthony -- could be off to the Portland Trailblazers, or even sent back to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a three-team trade with the Nuggets. Any deal with the Nuggets would return at least two of the players Denver received for Anthony.

From the very beginning it was assumed that no matter how hard the Nuggets tried to engage other teams in a trade for Anthony, that the forward's desire to be in New York would be the determining factor. That turns out to be true as the Knicks bring Anthony back home and will make a run for the playoffs with a "Big Three" of their own of Amar'e Stoudemire, Anthony and Billups.

The long and winding Carmelo Anthony trade road is finally coming to an end. It appears at the end of that road is Anthony being delivered to his preferred New York Knicks, as a trade between the Denver Nuggets and Knicks is "imminent", according to the Denver Post.

Anthony could not be asked about the trade Monday, as he was excused from Nuggets practice so he could be a guest on "Conan" with Conan O'Brien.

After the Knicks reportedly refused to include rookie center Timofey Mozgov in the deal, they seem to have backed down from that stance in order to finally get Anthony in New York.

In the end, New York will be giving up Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Mozgov, Eddy Curry and a first round pick. Coming back to the Knicks in addition to Anthony are Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams and Anthony Carter.

The New Jersey Nets failure (again) to land Anthony has GM Billy King and owner Mikhail Prokhorov heading back to the drawing board. Yahoo! Sports reports that the Nets will now consider several trades including sending Devin Harris and Troy Murphy to the Portland Trailblazers for Andre Miller and Joel Przybilla.

There is also the possibility that New Jersey will send two first round picks to Denver in return for either Gallinari, Felton or Chandler plus Mozgov.

For the last few months, the typical thought process has been that the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets have been competing to see which team will be able to obtain Carmelo Anthony in most NBA trade rumors.

It turns out, according to an ESPN report, that the Nuggets are actually interested in working out a trade that allows all three teams to get in on the action despite only one of them being able to say they were the team that was leaking the right information when it came to who would bring Anthony aboard during the two-month surge in Carmelo Anthony trade rumors.

According to Chris Broussard, if the Knicks send Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler and Timofey Mozgov to Denver for Anthony, the Nets are in discussions to then acquire either Gallinari, Felton or Chandler plus Mozgov for two first-round draft picks.

Broussard explains that this is a backup plan for the Nets if they aren’t able to pry away Anthony, but one that might also irritate the Knicks considering a few of their young pieces would soon be moving nearby in Brooklyn.

And, as an update, it seems none of this scenario will happen if the Knicks keep Mozgov out of the talks as they have done thus far.

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday, meaning either way, the Melo-drama will be completed in the next few days.

No news yet today from the Denver Nuggets, and no word from Carmelo Anthony. So, it is status quo when it comes to the ongoing ‘Melo-Drama.’ That, however, does not mean there has not been some intrigue.

Word has been that Anthony will officially tell the New Jersey Nets today or Tuesday whether or not he will sign an extension with them if the Nuggets trade him there. Most likely, he will not, meaning a trade to New Jersey won’t happen.

The Nets seem to be prepping for the inevitable letdown of Anthony saying no to them, and maybe putting themselves in a position to at least tweak the cross-town New York Knicks a bit if and when they do acquire Anthony.

Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov made some vague references over the weekend to trying to force the Knicks to increase their offer to Denver. A report today has indicated that if Anthony goes to the Knicks the Nets and Nuggets would then pull off a trade in which some of the players given up by the Knicks would end up in New Jersey, most notably Danilo Gallkinari and/or Raymond Felton.

Via Twitter, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports has indicated that the Nets may be bluffing in order to divide the Knicks’ front office. SI.com’s Chris Mannix also tweeted that the Nets are ’throwing in the towel" at this point.

Now, if we could just get some real word from the Nuggets or from Anthony then maybe we could all get back to our regularly scheduled lives.

The clock appears to be running out on the ‘Melo-Drama.’ Finally. According to Newsday the Denver Nuggets are getting pressure from other teams around the NBA to make a decision regarding the Carmelo Anthony trade so that other proposed trades around the league can be completed by the Feb. 24 trade deadline.

The Nuggets, per Newsday, are expected to finalize a deal with either the New York Knicks or New Jersey Nets within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The Knicks have also reportedly told Denver officials that they will not increase the offer they have on the table for Anthony. That offer includes Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry and a first round pick that would come from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Nets and Nuggets have agreed to a deal that would send Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Melvin Ely and Renaldo Balkman to the Nets in exchange for Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Ben Uzoh, Troy Murphy and four first-round picks. Anthony, however, has not committed to signing a contract extension with the Nets. Rather, he has expressed his preference for going to the Knicks.

A resolution to the ‘Melo-Drama’ will be appreciated by everyone around the league as it seems the entire NBA has been held hostage to this situation in some way.

It seems, at this point, as though Denver would seem to have to accept the Knicks’ offer.
