Week 17 turned into a glorified pre-season game for the New York Jets as they rolled over the Buffalo Bills 38-7 in a nice stat cushion game for the backups and some starters. Mark Sanchez didn't throw a single pass, as Brad Smith saw extended work in the Wildcat and Mark Brunell threw a pair of touchdown passes. The defense forced six turnovers, including a pair of interceptions from Marquice Cole in a dominant performance over a hapless Bills offense led by Brian Brohm,

Joe McKnight took advantage of both LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene being inactive for rest and turned in 158 yards on 32 carries. Calvin Pace and Jason Taylor both played terrific games, and hopefully can roll some of their momentum into the playoffs, where the Jets opponent remains undecided but could very well end up being the Indianapolis Colts.

While it was nice for the Jets to get 11 wins, there honestly isn't too much worth investing in this victory. It is time for the playoffs, which is the only place the team can back up their big words from the pre-season.

Here are few thoughts on who to play and who to sit this week on your fantasy football team.

Play

Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Jets haven’t exactly been lights out defending the pass, and Fitzpatrick has had a good season. Maybe Jets running back Shonn Greene, though any Jets are gambles considering no one knows how much they will play.

Sit

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. He will start, but he won’t finish and no one knows exactly how long he will be in the game. Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson. The veteran has had a good year for the Jets, but has worn down a bit as the season has progressed. You have to think he won’t see much action, rather that the Jets will rest him for the playoffs.

If you have a kick return spot in your lineup, Brad Smith of the Jets is always a good play.

(Sports Network) – Running the ball effectively has been a late-season go-to for the Jets, who are sixth in the league with their average of 139.9 rushing yards per game. New York has slipped to 19th in scoring average (21.9 ppg) and is middle of the pack in terms of total yards per game (348.5, 13th) and passing yards per game (208.7, 20th). Ominously, the Bills have yielded the league’s most ground to opposing runners (162.5 ypg), and their 25.8 points per game average is good for just 27th in the league. Foes have gained an average of 359.8 total yards (24th overall) and 197.3 pass yards (4th) per week as well.

Mark Sanchez is 209 passing yards from becoming the first Jet with 3,500 in a season since Vinny Testaverde in 2000. In his last two games against Buffalo, he has three touchdown throws, no interceptions and a 100.9 passer rating. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson had 133 yards and two touchdowns in New York’s win over the Bills earlier this season and averages 100.8 yards in six career games against them, along with six touchdowns. Wideout Santonio Holmes caught the 25th touchdown pass of his career last week and fellow receiver Braylon Edwards aims for a third straight game against Buffalo with a score. Elsewhere, Dustin Keller needs two catches to become the sixth tight end in Jets history with 150. He had a career-best two touchdown grabs in the last game against the Bills. The Jets have 14 kick return touchdowns since 2001, most in the league, and main return man Brad Smith is second in the NFL with a 28.6 yard average on kick runbacks in 2010.

Defensively, the Bills tied a franchise record with six interceptions in their last road trip to New York. Linebacker Paul Posluszny leads the team with 139 tackles and linebacker Akin Ayodele had a team-best 17 last week. Also, linebacker Chris Kelsay has five career sacks against the Jets, tied for his most against any foe.

(Sports Network) – The Bills have struggled to make a dent offensively, averaging just 18.4 points per game (27th in the NFL), 314.4 total yards per game (24th) and 202.2 passing yards per game (24th). They move up to the middle range in rushing with a 112.2 yards per game average that’s good for 15th. Contrarily, the Jets have been usually productive on defense, posting the 11th-best opposition scoring average (19.8 ppg) and leaping to the top 10 in total yards allowed (300.1 ypg), passing yards allowed (205.7 ypg) and rushing yards allowed (94.5 ypg).

Ryan Fitzpatrick needs two touchdown passes to become the third Bills quarterback to reach 25 in a season. He has a 95.4 rating in road games within the division in 2010. Running back Fred Jackson is 108 yards shy of become the seventh Buffalo runner to reach 1,000 in consecutive seasons. He’s also just 95 scrimmage yards away from 4,000 for his career. Wideout Steve Johnson reached 1,000 yards in a season for the first time in his career last week and is two touchdown catches from a franchise record. He’s scored in two of his last three games against the Jets.

On defense, Jets end Jason Taylor can add to his 20 career sacks against the Bills, his most against any opponent. Safety Dwight Lowery had a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown last week, his second of the season. End Shaun Ellis has three sacks in his last two games against Buffalo and linebacker Bryan Thomas looks for a fourth straight game with at least one.

The NFL has fined the New York Jets $100,000 for the sideline tripping incident earlier this season involving Sal Alosi, the team’s strength and conditioning coach. That, of course, is pocket change for an NFL franchise, but the fine is another stain a franchise that has seen a number of unseemly off-the-field incidents this season.

The NFL called Alosi’s trip of Miami’s Nolan Carroll and his subsequent admission that he instructed sideline personnel to line up in such as fashion as to inhibit gunners on the opposing teams “a competitive violation as well as a dangerous tactic.”

The NFL apparently also took into consideration comments by Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff insinuating that the New England Patriots utilize this sideline tactic.

Alosi has been suspended indefinitely by the Jets. I still believe Alosi should have been fired, if for no other reason that the organization needing to make some type of statement that the outside nonsense that has nothing to do with football needs to stop.

Best guess here is that Alosi never works for the Jets again. He will probably quietly find other employment during the off-season and slip out of sight. At least I hope that’s what happens.

It is no secret that many of the Jets backups will see extended action this Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Here are a few players that can make a case for playing time the following week in the first round of the playoffs --

1. Joe McKnight - "The reason we released Danny Woodhead" has slowly been getting more involved and actually turned into a pretty good special teams player. However, he should see plenty of reps at running back this week and with a strong performance could be involved in the Jets offensive game plan the following week. McKnight has the speed to get to the outside that neither Shonn Greene or LaDainian Tomlinson possess and also has the ability to line up in the slot.

2. Marquice Cole - A guy that has played all over the Jets secondary this year and has shown some potential. You have to wonder whether he could be more effective than Drew Coleman or Dwight Lowery. If Cole puts together another strong performance Sunday, perhaps he will be involved in more defensive packages during wild-card weekend.

3. Kyle Wilson - Unfortunately our 2010 first round pick has been somewhat of a bust so far this year. I am sure the defensive coaching staff will give him a longer look than usual this Sunday and maybe if he has learned to play the football in the air, he will split nickel reps with Drew Coleman again.

4. Marcus Dixon - Another random defensive lineman who has more sacks than Vernon Gholston. Dixon was activated for the only the second time last week and still recorded his first sack of the season. He is a big body who might provide an upgrade over Gholston in the defensive line rotation.

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan was on ESPN New York Radio this week discussing the state of the Jets. Sports Radio Interview has the entire transcript. Here are some of the highlights:

On him still believing that his defense can and will get better:

“Well no I think we can definitely make it better, from the front end, the backers, to the back end. We weren’t getting off blocks, that’s not how we play run defense. Our pad level was high, we’ve got to get our pads back down, and we’ve got to start getting extension and ripping off blocks. I always call it walking off blocks; you shed a guy, but that’s all you do, you won’t get your body in position to make tackles and that’s really what was happening. Poor tackling, and our inability to get off blocks and shed blocks like we normally do, we weren’t as good at.”

On if he plans to play starters more than he might otherwise next week so that they can work on improving prior to the playoffs:

“Well, here’s the tough thing: this is not a preseason game by any stretch. So you’re trying to win, but you’re also trying to make sure you’re healthy for the playoffs. We’re already in so it’s a fine line, but it’s not like there can be wholesale substitutions. So there’s going to be a lot of guys playing, starters playing, things like that. I just want our guys to get back to the fundamentals of what we’ve taught since training camp and lean on that, lean on your technique, lean on those things that you know how to do, and rely on that and some standards we have on defense – flying to the ball, shedding blocks, not walking off blocks, and being a good tackling team. That’s what this thing is based on. It’s not just about scheme and that kind of stuff.”

On how confident his team may or may not be after all the ups and downs of the season:

“Well right now we’re very confident. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. We’re confident that we can beat you with our offense, we can beat you with our defense, and we can beat you with our special teams. And I don’t know how many teams can really say that. We’ve done it. We’ve beat teams when the defense has kind of had to carry the day; same thing with the special teams; and same thing with our offense. So that’s what gives me confidence and gives our team confidence. Playoff time you’ve got to be hitting on all cylinders, and that’s what the mission is…”

Rex Ryan has been unusually indecisive when discussing how he plans to use his starters this week against the Buffalo Bills. Regardless of the game's outcome, the Jets will be on the road Wild-Card Weekend, either facing the Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, or Jacksonville Jaguars. From what we have heard lately, look for Mark Sanchez to start but not play the whole game and for Damien Woody, James Ihedigbo, and potentially Eric Smith to get another week of rest before the playoffs.

On offense, look for Shonn Greene and Joe McKnight to get extended work. Greene should be getting groomed as the team's lead back for January, while McKnight could limit the touches LaDainian Tomlinson receives so he is fresh for the playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised to see Santonio Holmes get some rest either, since he has been nursing various nagging injuries.

On defense, the starters need all the reps they can get considering their poor play lately. However, I wouldn't be shocked if Rex Ryan experimented with a few different things and gave a longer look to players like Kyle Wilson and Marquice Cole. The only players on the defense who merit any kind of rest right now are Darrelle Revis and David Harris.

A few stats to keep an eye on -

Mark Sanchez needs 3 touchdown passes to reach 20.

Mark Sanchez needs 209 passing yards to reach 3,500.

Braylon Edwards needs 148 receiving yards to reach 1,000.

LaDainian Tomlinson needs 86 rushing yards to reach 1,000.

Dustin Keller needs 5 receptions for 60.

David Harris needs 3 tackles for 100.
