Martin Brodeur gave the New Jersey Devils a scare Wednesday when he had to leave a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks with an elbow injury. Brodeur, however, does not expect to miss any time.

Brodeur has experienced this injury before.

"I just kind of got a stinger," he explained. "I never saw the shot from Kane. It kind of hit me, not in the funny bone but on the bone where all the nerves are connected.

"It (the pain) went away but when I grabbed my stick to make a play behind the net, I didn’t have any strength to hold the stick."

Can he play Friday night?

"From past experience it takes me a couple of days to feel 100 percent," Brodeur said. "We’ll see how this reacts. I’m pretty sure (he can play against the Rangers)."

Finally, some good news for the 4-9-1 Devils. A victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions and an injury that won't have long-term ramifications. New Jersey has had plenty of those. The last thing they need as they try to dig out of the early-season hole they have created is to be without their future Hall of Fame goalkeeper for an extended period of time.

As if the New Jersey Devils don’t already have enough problems, goalkeeper Martin Brodeur left tonight’s game against Chicago early with an elbow injury.

Despite taking a 2-0 lead at the United Center against the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night, the struggling Devils lost starting goalie Martin Brodeur with a what the team called a bruised right elbow.

The Devils said x-rays were negative but that he’s not likely to return.

Play was stopped at 5:27 of the second period for Devils athletic trainers to take a look at Brodeur’s right arm after he stopped Patrick Kane’s blast from the lower left circle just below the numbers on his sleeve. Brodeur, playing in his sixth straight game, tried to continue but left the net at the next whistle, 21 seconds later, and headed for the locker room. He was replaced by backup Johan Hedberg.

The New Jersey Devils will be going against a very angry Chicago Blackhawks team tonight. After losing 3-2 against the Rangers, in a very winnable game, they will be looking for a little blood tonight against the streaking Devils.

The Devils, who learned yesterday that Zach Parise will miss three months, have a league-worst nine losses and seven points; two things that we were not expecting to associate with the Devils this year.

Since posting a 2-1 victory in Anaheim on Friday, the Devils have scored just one goal over two straight losses to Los Angeles and Vancouver. New Jersey was blanked 3-0 by Roberto Luongo and the Canucks on Monday after dropping a 3-1 decision in LA on Saturday.

Martin Brodeur stopped 20 shots in defeat for the Devils and the loss wasn't the only bad news New Jersey received on Monday. The Devils also learned that forward Zach Parise will undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his knee and will be out for an undetermined period of time. Parise aggravated an injury Saturday night in Los Angeles that hampered him during the summer.

Parise recorded a team-high 82 points (38 goals, 44 assists) in 2009-10.

The loss of Parise will place even more pressure on fellow winger Ilya Kovalchuk to break out of his scoring slump. The Russian star has three goals and three assists on the year, but hasn't registered a single point over his last four games. Kovalchuk, of course, is in the first season of a 15-year, $100 million deal.

The Devils, who will begin a three-game homestand Friday against the rival New York Rangers, are 3-5-0 as the road team overall this year.
