<p>Washington, DC (Sports Network) – <span>Alex Ovechkin</span> scored his first two goals of the 2010 season, and the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.japersrink.com/">Washington Capitals</a> put on an offensive showcase to rout the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.allaboutthejersey.com/">New Jersey Devils</a>, 7-2, in the home opener at Verizon Center.</p>
<p>Ovechkin, who has four 50-goal seasons in his first five full years in the league, recorded his second career penalty shot tally for the Capitals, who notched their first win of the season after dropping a 4-2 decision to Atlanta on Friday.</p>
<p>New Jersey native <span>John Carlson</span> added a goal and two assists for Washington, while <span>Tomas Fleischmann</span> had a goal and an assist in the victory. <span>Brooks Laich</span>, <span>Eric Fehr</span> and <span>Jason Chimera</span> also scored, while <span>Michal Neuvirth</span> stopped 31 shots.</p>
<p><span>Henrik Tallinder</span> and <span>Jason Arnott</span> scored for the Devils, who lost to the Stars, 4-3 in overtime, in their season opener on Friday. <span>Martin Brodeur</span> lasted just two periods, allowing five goals on 20 shots, before <span>Johan Hedberg</span> finished the third period with seven saves.</p>
<p>Ovechkin gave the Capitals their first lead late in the second with his first goal of the season.</p>
<p>Skating into the Devils’ zone clearly outnumbered, Ovechkin fired the puck from the left circle while surrounded by four New Jersey skaters. The puck bounced off the ice and found its way through Brodeur for a 3-2 Washington lead with 5:29 on the clock.</p>
<p>Just moments later, Chimera took a cross-ice feed and cleanly beat Brodeur on the stick side from the right circle for a two-goal Caps advantage with 1:35 showing.</p>
<p>With seconds remaining in the period, Ovechkin was granted a penalty shot after being dragged down from behind in the offensive zone. On the free chance, he skated down the left side, drew Brodeur to the ice, then beat the veteran high on the glove side to increase the margin to three.</p>
<p>Laich’s short-handed tally and Fehr’s power-play marker were the third-period goals for Washington.</p>
<p>Both teams opened the scoring within the first three minutes.</p>
<p>New Jersey capitalized on an early Washington turnover in its own zone, as Arnott tapped in a rebound from in close after a <span>Jamie Langenbrunner</span> shot at 1:49. Less than a minute later, Carlson pumped a slapshot past Brodeur from the high slot on a quick rush to tie the game.</p>
<p>The Devils came right back with a short-handed tally from new acqusition Tallinder, who fired a slapper from the slot that beat Neuvirth with 6:16 remaining in the period.</p>
<p>Washington evened the score again on Fleischmann’s one-timer from down low just prior to the two-minute mark of the second.</p>

<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">The two clubs will try to change that tonight when Washington opens its home schedule against New Jersey at the Verizon Center.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Helped by a 30-5-6 record at home, the Capitals won the Presidents' Trophy thanks to a 121-point season, but that didn't stop them from blowing a 3-1 series lead over Montreal in the postseason's opening round. The Devils, the conference's second seed and Atlantic Division champs, didn't fare much better as they were knocked off by the Flyers in the first round.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Hoping to rebound from those upsets, both Washington and New Jersey lost their season openers on Friday night. Washington dropped a 4-2 decision in Atlanta, while New Jersey suffered a 4-3 overtime loss against visiting Dallas.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">The Capitals' opener was overshadowed by a scary moment early in the game when Thrashers goaltender<span>Ondrej Pavelec</span> collapsed in front of his own goal, losing consciousness. He was quickly attended to by trainers and carted off the ice before being taken to a local hospital.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Pavelec regained consciousness and the team announced that preliminary tests were negative.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Washington's <span>Brooks Laich</span> scored the game's first goal on Atlanta's <span>Chris Mason</span> not long after the incident, but the Thrashers scored the game's next three goals to seize control.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;"><span>Mike Knuble</span> scored in the third period and <span>Michal Neuvirth</span> allowed all four goals on 31 shots for the Caps.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">"They just outworked us here tonight," said Washington head coach Bruce Boudreau. "You get rewarded when you outwork teams. Our guys are old enough to know they have to play better if they want to succeed. It's not as if this is their first game together. It's one game, [Saturday] we'll be at home and we'll be ready."</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">New Jersey will pay a visit to the Verizon Center after last night's overtime loss. <span>Travis Zajac</span> and <span>Zach Parise</span>scored less then eight minutes into the game as the Devils took control early, but the Stars battled back and earned the extra point on <span>Loui Eriksson</span>'s tally 1:36 into OT.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Zajac also had an assist, <span>Jason Arnott</span> scored and <span>Ilya Kovalchuk</span> set up two goals in his first regular-season game since signing his much-publicized 15- year, $100 million contract this offseason.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">"I thought we competed really hard and as I said before the game, it's the little things that make the difference. These things happen and we live and learn and move on. It's a long season," said Devils head coach John MacLean, who was coaching his first game with the club after taking over for the fired Jacques Lemaire.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">The Devils won three of four over the Capitals last season and have won seven of their last 10 trips to Washington.</p>
