New York Jets coach Rex Ryan ripped into rookie running back Joe McKnight after the fourth-round selection fumbled Thursday night for the third time in the preseason.

“Joe McKnight’s got to hold on to the football,’’ Ryan said after his team beat the Eagles, 21-17, to finish 2-2 on the preseason. “That was disappointing. Here’s a guy (McKnight) that’s on the bubble of making the active roster and I don’t have confidence in him. I don’t see how he can make the active roster. That’s how I feel about it.’’

Wow! “I don’t have confidence in him” is pretty direct. With Saturday being cut down day for NFL teams to reach the 53-man roster limit I would keep my bags packed if I was McKnight.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Mark Brunell’s 51-yard touchdown throw to Santonio Holmes shortly into the fourth quarter put the Jets in front, and New York held on for a 21-17 victory over the Eagles in the team’s final preseason game.

Holmes made four catches for 97 yards on a night when most starters for both teams did not play. Brunell started for New York and completed 11-of-17 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns, while Kellen Clemens was 7-of-13 for 70 yards.

Danny Woodhead added 45 rushing yards and a score for the Jets, who went 2-2 in the preseason and open their 2010 season by hosting a Monday night contest, September 13, against Baltimore.

Michael Vick started at quarterback for the Eagles and attempted five passes, completing three for 56 yards. Rookie Mike Kafka got the majority of playing time under center and completed only 9-of-27 passes for 76 yards, and was intercepted once.

Kurt Coleman returned two fumbles for touchdowns for the Eagles, who also went 2-2 in the preseason. They begin the season September 12 at home against Green Bay.

Philadelphia gained just 184 yards and did not score in the second half.

The New York Jets have Super Bowl expectations this season, and Jets fans know how that has worked out for them in the past.

Seasoned Jets fans know to have their guard up when expectations are high. Something always seems to go wrong. With that said, this is the most talented roster we have seen in a while. The front office has great faith in its head coach to bring together a locker room full of personalilities with good reason. If [Mark] Sanchez matures to the point where the Jets have even a middle of the road passing game, the [Darrelle] Revis situation ends in contract peace, and the team avoids the injury bug, they might just make good on those big expectations.

Does anything Rex Ryan say or do surprise you anymore? It shouldn’t really. But his latest stunt caught me by surprise nevertheless. Ryan reportedly will have quarterback Mark Sanchez serve as the offensive coordinator for part of Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles. Sanchez, who was not going to play in the game anyway, will at least be forced to stay sharp and be mentally involved with the game’s proceedings as he calls in some plays via walkie-talkie.

The idea, of course, is to expose Sanchez to a different aspect of the game, giving him a coach’s perspective on why and how certain plays are called. It’s a clever way of doing things. Ryan said he used to do it in Baltimore on defense, letting LB Ray Lewis and S Ed Reed call plays in the preseason. They gave it up, he said, when they realized it’s not as easy as it looks.

Not that he exactly set the world on fire last season during his rookie campaign with the New York Jets, but all things considered quarterback Mark Sanchez fared solidly in 2009. Now Sanchez must avoid the so-called sophomore slump. Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens, and Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons fell prey to the mythical slump a year ago following their accomplished rookie seasons. Now all eyes are on Sanchez to see if he can not only avoid regressing this coming season, but also if he can take several big steps forward for Rex Ryan and the Jets in ’10.

Sanchez hit the airwaves with Michael Kay on ESPN Radio in New York on Tuesday to talk about the heightened pressure on him this season with all the lofty expectations surrounding the Jets, as well as other interesting topics such as his comfort level with Santonio Holmes, if there’s any concerns at left guard, and the development of Dustin Keller. Sanchez, like usual, is candid, insightful and humble all at once with his responses. Here’s a few choice quotes from the interview.

What grade he would give his preseason so far:

"I thought B-, C+, being critical of a couple of those that I want back and then having a couple of drives stall. Overall as an offense it wasn’t great for us but I feel like there are a lot of positives to build on, learn, we are going to be excited to get Antonio back whenever he comes back and then we saw some great things from the running game. So a lot to build on, we are excited to start the year. Not my best preseason but it will get better when it counts."

Which Mark Sanchez people can expect to see this year:

"Well I think one that is making better decisions that is for sure, over a long period of time and more consistent. Consistency has been the drive this entire camp and offseason. Staying sharp with my reads and not slipping, my routine, sticking to a routine where last year I was trying out a couple of different routines during the year so it was making things a little more difficult for us, but when we finally got one we really liked we went with that and that is when things started to turn around for us at the end of the year. I think the decision-making will be most important and that is what I will focus on."

New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie is reportedly fighting a hip injury, and there is speculation that an injury which caused him to have a poor 2008 season has resurfaced.

Kevin Armstrong of the New York Daily News reports that Cromartie was icing his hip after practice on Tuesday, and that coach Rex Ryan downplayed the condition in his daily press conference.

“I figured I’d float it out there, ‘Now they need Revis more than ever,’” Ryan said. “Cromartie missed two plays of team period.”

During the offseason, Cromartie missed some reps during minicamp practices due to a “fatigued” hip. But it was the left hip, not the right hip.

This time, it’s the right hip. And it’s the right hip that was fractured in 2008.

If Cromartie were to be limited that would be another blow to a Jets defense already without holdout cornerback Darrelle Revis and injured linebacker Calvin Pace.

(Sports Network) - A couple of struggling offenses will try to look sharp in what will likely be a reserve-laden feature attraction Thursday night, when the Philadelphia Eagles welcome the New York Jets to Lincoln Financial Field for each team's final preseason tune-up.

The Eagles were 20-17 winners in preseason action against the Kansas City Chiefs last Friday, but the team's first unit had its struggles in the victory. Quarterback Kevin Kolb was just 11-of-25 passing for 103 yards with an interception and four sacks absorbed against the Chiefs.

Kolb has a 63.7 passer rating without a touchdown pass in the 2010 preseason.

How much time Kolb and the first-string receives on Thursday night remains to be seen, and the status of center Jamaal Jackson (knee) and guard Todd Herremans (foot) for Thursday is unclear as well. Jackson has yet to play in the preseason to date as he recovers from surgery, while Herremans had a setback in practice this week after suiting up for his first preseason action last Sunday.

Defensively, the team will get a look at recently acquired cornerback Jorrick Calvin (Troy), a 2010 sixth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals who was acquired in a deal earlier this week that sent Eagles sixth-round fullback Charles Scott (LSU) to Philly.

For the Jets, quarterback Mark Sanchez is not expected to play at all, with backups Mark Brunell and Kellen Clemens slated to see time against the Birds.

One notable who should see significant time for the Jets is wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who will begin serving a four-game regular season suspension immediately after the Eagles game.

Holmes has a team-leading 78 receiving yards on five catches during the warm-up period.

Following Thursday's games, all 32 NFL teams will have until 6pm ET on Saturday evening to trim their rosters to the 53-player maximum.

The Jets hold a 20-11 edge in their preseason series with the Eagles, including a 38-27 home victory prior to last season.

Philadelphia is 8-0 all-time against the Jets in the regular season series, which is set to resume in 2011.

The Eagles open their 2010 regular season schedule at home against the Green Bay Packers on Sun, Sept. 12th, while the Jets open their slate by hosting the Baltimore Ravens the next night.
