Carmelo Anthony only has eyes for the New York Knicks. Then again, maybe he will accept a trade to the New Jersey Nets and sign a contract extension, if the circumstances are right. The Denver Nuggets have decided they have to trade their star forward. Or, maybe they have not quite made up their minds about that just yet.

Just what the heck is the deal with the ongoing Carmelo Anthony saga? The only thing certain right now is that this is getting better than a daytime soap opera.

Two stories that are polar opposites regarding Anthony broke today. Yahoo! Sports reported that the Nuggets and Nets are working on a "complicated multiteam trade proposal that would likely fit Carmelo Anthony’s criteria for signing a contract extension with the Nets."

We had previously heard that the Nuggets had finally decided there was no hope that Anthony would sign the three-year, $64-million extension Denver has offered him and that they were resigned to trading him. Only now, reports from Denver seem to indicate the exact opposite.

Don't expect any team to get a Christmas wish and find Carmelo Anthony under its tree. That's because the Denver Nuggets are entering the next phase in their last-ditch effort to try to keep Anthony.

The Nuggets are close to having their full roster intact for the first time this season. And a source said Monday night that Denver has no desire to trade Anthony until it can be seen how the team looks with a full cast.

Yikes! What is going on here, and who should we believe?

Sifting through all the mumbo-jumbo I think it is obvious the Nets desperately want Anthony to become the cornerstone of their rebuilding franchise. It is also brutally obvious that Anthony has reservations about playing for a team that has been a perennial doormat, and is once again this season not very good.

The Nets recently stocked up on draft picks when they dealt away Terrence Williams, and are reportedly trying to bring in enough talent to show Anthony that he would not be carrying the franchise alone.

Can they do enough? That is still the $64 million question, and nobody knows the answer.

Terrence Williams is a member of the Houston Rockets and along with guard Sasha Vujacic, the New Jersey Nets received a first round pick each of the next two drafts in return.

Yes, the Nets are collecting assets for a potential Carmelo Anthony trade but truth be told it's never a bad idea to stockpile as many draft picks as possible. Other than the "Big 3" coming together in Miami, how many teams really improved dramatically thanks to free agency? Billy King and Mikhail Prokhorov know that the most dangerous teams are the ones that can draft their next potential star or trade enough picks in order to acquire a proven one.

With all that being said, there should be no confusing why Williams will be playing his next game for the Houston Rockets: Avery Johnson didn't like him from the jump. Too many demerits for being late and an attitude that didn't have enough bite on the court for the "little general".

Despite what was reported in Denver on Tuesday night, no trade involving Anthony is imminent. King could have made this deal at any point between now and when/if a deal is struck with Denver, but his coach told him it was time to move on. Johnson needs guys that will play be his rules and for all the talk about being "humbled" after being demoted to the D-League, Williams was never going to see eye-to-eye with his coach.

The New Jersey Nets are expected to complete a trade that would send Terrence Williams to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday in exchange for a couple of first-round picks that would then likely be used in acquiring Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets.

The Nets will send WIlliams to Houston in exchange for the Los Angeles Lakers’ Sasha Vujacic and a 2012 first-round pick from the Rockets. The Nets will also send Joe Smith to the Lakers in return for a 2011 first-round pick from the Lakers, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter.

In acquiring two more first-round picks, the Nets would certainly be able to put together a more attractive package for the Nuggets which seems to be the reason this deal is being put together – though stockpiling draft picks is never a bad idea, either.

There are numerous reports that Williams was inactive for Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers, even though he was healthy, because the Nets didn’t want to risk him getting hurt. Smith, a journeyman, hasn’t appeared in a game for New Jersey since a Nov. 10 contest against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The deal, according to Wojnarowski, has been agreed to in principle which means it should be finalized sometime Wednesday.

It seems to have become a matter of when Denver Nuggets star forward Carmelo Anthony will become a New York Knick, not if that will happen.

An Anthony trade hinges on his willingness to sign a contract extension, and an ESPN report states that Anthony has indicated that New York is the only team with which he will sign that extension.

From the ESPN report:

“While other franchises might be able to make better offers, Anthony will not agree to sign anywhere long-term unless he is dealt to New York, according to the source, who has been privy to private discussions between Anthony, his representatives and the Nuggets organization.”

Anthony is under contract to the Nuggets for this season, and the organization has come to believe that he will not sign a long-term extension to stay in Denver. He has also said he will not accept a trade without an extension, and would instead become a free agent.

“Whatever decision I make, that is going to be the first thing that gets done,” Anthony said of signing the extension.

While the Knicks have won 13 of 14 and at 16-9 are serious playoff contenders the acquisition of Anthony, who averages 24.7 points per game for his eight-year career would make them a serious threat in the Eastern Conference.

Anthony to the Knicks would also be a loss for the New Jersey Nets, who many think have the best package of players and expiring contracts to offer Denver.

Attention, New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets! Your attention please! CBS Sports is reporting that the Denver Nuggets have finally come to the realization that they have to trade star forward Carmelo Anthony if he won’t sign a contract extension by the upcoming NBA trade deadline.

The Nuggets have all but decided to trade Anthony if he does not sign an extension with the team by the trade deadline, and Denver’s management team believes Anthony is fully prepared to play out the season and become a free agent, multiple sources told CBSSports.com. … if Anthony doesn’t agree to sign the three-year, $65 million extension by the Feb. 24 trade deadline, the wheels are all but certain to be put in motion to part ways with the three-time All-Star rather than lose him as a free agent and get nothing in return.

You have to wonder what took the Nuggets this long to realize Anthony was not coming back. But, now that they have the speculation about where he will end up should start again. The Knicks and Nets will be right at the forefront of that chatter.

Speculation is that Anthony would prefer the Knicks. Reality, as it has been all along, is that the Nets have the best package to offer Denver. That would be one including 2010 No. 3 draft pick Derrick Favors, point guard Devin Harris and the expiring contract of Kris Humphries.

With the Knicks playing as well as they have, and Madison Square Garden being, well, Madison Square Garden, it seems Anthony would push to join the Knicks. Should be a fun couple of months of speculatiing, at least.

On the court, the New Jersey Nets are off to a 2-0 start to the 2010-2011 NBA season. Off the court, they appear to be winning the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes.

According to a published report, the Nets are Anthony’s likely landing spot if he is traded this season.

“If he’s moved before Christmas, I think the Nets have a pretty good chance,” said an NBA executive.

League sources believe the Nuggets will realize they have to move Anthony before the Feb. 24 trade deadline or they could lose him as a free agent over the summer, especially since Anthony has put it out there that he wants a change of scenery.

The Nuggets could decide to wait until Dec. 15 to trade Anthony, because that’s when teams can move players they signed in the off-season. It’s possible another team could offer something Denver likes better than what the Nets have.

The Nets have offered Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy and two No. 1 draft picks, but could expand it to include Kris Humphries. The only untouchable on the Nets remains Brook Lopez.

The Nets also would be willing to take back more pieces from the Nuggets, who want to cut payroll and avoid a luxury-tax hit if they deal Anthony. They want to get a deal done and have been the most active in talks for the star small forward.

Reportedly, Anthony is not sold on the Nets, but they only would commit to a deal if he agreed to sign a three-year, $65 million extension. His top two choices remain the Knicks and Bulls. But they don’t have as much to offer in the way of draft picks, short-term salary relief and long-term cap space. The contracts of Murphy and Humphries are up after this season.

From Iannazzone:

The sources said the Nets’ latest offer for Anthony is [Derrick] Favors, Troy Murphy, Kris Humphries and two No. 1 picks. The sources also said they expect the talks to pick up.

Giving up three power forwards would force the Nets to play Travis Outlaw and Joe Smith at that spot, but they would do it in a heartbeat if it meant Anthony would be playing home games in Newark this season and Brooklyn in 2012.

He concludes by saying “[Anthony] will be moved at some point, and the Nets still are in a good position in the race.” That news has to excite any Nets fans who were worried their team squandered its chance when the four-team proposition fell apart.

While the Knicks may be out of the sweepstakes, the New Jersey Nets still seem to be in the running according to Aldridge.

Other league sources that have been involved in trade discussions with the Nuggets about Anthony in recent weeks maintained that the New Jersey Nets are still in direct talks with Denver about Anthony, though a proposed four-way trade that would have brought Anthony to the Nets last month involving New Jersey, Denver, Utah and Charlotte fell through.

One source said that though that deal died, the Nets have “never been out of the mix” in discussions about Anthony, and that Denver was still trying to figure out a way to get either forward Andrei Kirienko from Utah, Charlotte’s Gerald Wallace or the 76ers’ Andre Iguodala in a package for Anthony.
