As per Bob McKenzie the New York Rangers have agreed to a five-year deal with RFA Marc Staal. The terms according to the tweets of Larry Brooks:

NYP_Brooksie: Staal’s deal 5 yrs, $3.975M per…both sides win

I personally couldn’t agree more, Staal re-signing for under $4 million is actually surprising since a ton of people were expecting a salary near or at the $4.5 million mark. The Rangers were able to get Staal for a long-term contract, and keep his salary nice and low. This was a huge move for the Rangers and it ties the biggest loose end of the off-season in New York.

Regardless, this was the final piece to Glen Sather’s masterful off-season. The best part is that he got it done right before camp, so Staal wont have to miss any time with the team. There will be no tension between John Tortorella and Stall for him not being in camp, and he will be conditioned properly with the rest of the team; which will result in no rust when the season starts.

Now if we could just get Wade Redden to Hartford.

As per Andrew Gross the New York Rangers and RFA Marc Staal still aren’t close to a new contract:

It doesn’t seem like getting Marc Staal signed will be one of those events over the next couple of weeks. From what I gathered yesterday, the sides are still far apart. This is also not a negotiation that will be playing out in public so, one day, Marc Staal will be signed. As I mentioned in my last blog post, John Tortorella is not looking to have Staal in training camp if the restricted free agent defenseman is not signed but Tortorella is "optimistic" a deal will be reached. Here’s today’s column in The Record based on the interview I did with Tortorella earlier this week.

I have to say that I am surprised by this. One would have to assume that Staal would be the Rangers top priority, but Glen Sather doesn’t seem too keen on getting this over with quickly.

All I have to say is that the longer Staal sits on the market, the more dangerous of a game this becomes. If another team comes and forces the Rangers hand with a heftier, more expensive, contract; this can become a problem.

Which could result in — dare I say it — Staal not wearing a Ranger uniform next year. Obviously, we’re not at that point yet, but with every second that ticks off the clock we’re getting closer.

After reporting that the New York Rangers and RFA Marc Staal are "a chasm” away from striking an agreement with negotiations, Larry Brooks is now reporting that Staal has turned down a 4-year, $14-million offer from General Manager Glen Sather.

This from that Brooks story:

There is plenty of time for the Rangers to resolve the issue with Staal. Our information in this case is that the Blueshirts have made an equitable offer to the defenseman in the range of four years for $14 million, but that his agent — a fellow who once played named Bobby Orr — is seeking substantially more than that.

Absent arbitration rights, Staal’s only leverage would be to attract an offer sheet. Unless one comes in that is totally out of whack — remember, for all his admirable qualities, Staal does not have the puck-moving game that is most valued these days — the Rangers will match without blinking an eye, and everyone knows it.

There are rumors circulating that Staal is looking for a one-year deal, so that he will not lose his arbitration rights next year. Obviously, Sather wants to sign Staal for less than $4 million a year -- that’s apparent from the reported offer (a very fair offer, may I add) that Sather made earlier.

But it would not be insane to assume that Staal, and his agent, know that he would command more than the $3.5 million that he was offered in arbitration.

Obviously, that’s not what Brooks said above, but there is a chance that it’s either much more money or simply a one-year deal. You never know.

So while it’s unconfirmed, maybe Staal wants fewer years, not more money. Make sure to keep coming here for updates and always visit Blueshirt Banter for your in-depth Rangers news and analysis.

Steve Zipay of Newsday is reporting that Rangers General Manager Glen Sather is describing the recent negotiations with the star defenseman Marc Staal, a restricted free agent, as "a chasm."

Obviously, this is not good. There should be absolutely no issues with these negotiations at all. But since the Rangers are very "tight-lipped" about issues like this, we have no idea of knowing what each side is asking. What I can tell you, though, is that Sather isn't very happy, since he very rarely makes public statements about issues like this.

Staal, who is quite easily one of the biggest draft successes of the Sather era (aside from Henrik Lundqvist), has been an integral part of the New York Rangers since he entered the league in 2007. Although he is one of the youngest defensemen on the team, he is easily the most savvy defenseman on the Rangers roster, and one of the more versatile.

Let's throw some numbers at you. At 23, he already has 244 games under his belt, with 13 goals and 39 assists in that time span. He has also played in 17 playoff games, putting up two goals and two assists. This past season was easily his most productive: In 82 games, he put up his best career offensive numbers with eight goals and 19 assists. While he hasn't been an amazing offensive weapon for the Rangers as of yet, his offensive game is really improving as he continues to grow. It's not completely insane to assume that he can be a 40-plus point player and shutdown defender in a few years ... or even next year if the Rangers start to find their offensive stride.

Basically, the kid needs to be re-signed. As I said before, I see no reason why this won't happen, but we really have no idea what's going on behind the curtain right now. Which is why you should keep it here for updates.

Regardless, Blueshirt Banter has a story on this and will provide constant updates on the issue as will we here.
