The New York Yankees lost, 7-3, to the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night in the finale of their three-game series at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees were looking to complete a series sweep, but CC Sabathia (7-3) gave up three earned runs in seven innings off seven hits and a walk. He struck out a season high 12 despite earning the loss.
The Rays led 5-1 after four innings. Elliott Johnson reached second base off a throwing error by Alex Rodriguez in third inning, and Ben Zobrist drove him in with a single to center to put Tampa Bay up, 2-1. B.J. Upton gave Tampa Bay another run in the inning on a sacrifice fly to score Zobrist. The Rays scored two runs in the fourth on a Drew Sutton double to score Jose Lobaton and Matt Joyce.
The Yankees scored just one run off David Price (8-3) in his five innings on the mound. Price struck out eight, and gave up just three hits with four walks. Chris Stewart grounded out to second in the second inning, scoring Nick Swisher in the process and tying the game at 1-1. The Yankees would trail the rest of the game after the second inning, however. Raul Ibanez hit an RBI single to make the score 5-2 in the eighth inning.
The Rays pulled away again with two runs in the top of the ninth. Sutton and Johnson hit RBI doubles off Clay Rapada to give Tampa Bay a 7-2 lead. Russell Martin hit a solo home run off J.P. Howell in the bottom of the inning to cap the Yankees' scoring at three runs. New York went 1-for-10 on the night with runners in scoring position.
The Yankees begin a three-game series with the New York Mets on Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium. Hiroki Kuroda (4-6, 3.82 ERA) will take on the Mets' Johan Santana (3-2, 2.38).
